You can't beat that pure professionalism from Bamber. Absolutely riveting right up to the wire. The scouser just flew like a bird whenever needed , what a guy. Loved it , thank you very much. : )
So sad to hear that Bamber Gascoigne just passed away. RIP Emperor of Quiz Masters. The greatest ever. A true Englishman gentleman. A patrician. Fount of knowledge. Paxman isn’t even a shadow.....and the questions have been dumbed down.
I 100% AGREE...The questions have indeed been "Dumbed down" I suppose they have to be for today's thick generation of university students. I met the late Bamber Gascoigne in York about 20 years ago... He was a true gent and will be sorely missed.
Must disagree about the questions. Watching these superb old episodes, seems to me that Peter Hitchens's complaint that the questions have become far too specialised is legitimate. They are far more general and that is what makes them generally more difficult.
That bit between four to five minutes where both teams answered the starters incorrectly or didn't know, Bamber was almost sympathetic to the teams. Seemed like ages before someone got a starter right. Had that been Paxman he'd have said in no uncertain terms "Are you all really thick?".
House and Garden lol! Interesting that the students did not always answer through the leader - no "nominate x". Did they actually have a leader? Love this version of the theme tune! (Mrs L)
They definitely made "answer via the captain" a rule in the reboot, but (if I remember it right) using the word "nominate" developed from the teams themselves who'd probably grown up with 15-1.
Great. I hope the whole tournament's on here. (I wont look, because I might see who goes through.) Don't like the latest versions, with everybody in boxes and the abrasive Paxman.
He was the perfect host for this show. Professional, patient, but clearly super-intelligent. RIP Bamber.
Bamber was a Grenadier Guardsman. What a gent.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bamber Gascoigne a few years back. A nice, shy humble man. RIP !

There's something about the warmth, innocence and integrity of this programme and the loss of it, that is very sad
Such a beautifully modulated voice Bamber Gascoigne had, and what a pleasure to go back down memory lane.
Bamber: "He's doing fine so far, two more to go."
Paxman: "I'm sorry - if you buzz, you must answer straight away."
one of the terrible things the BBC did was bring it back without Bamber
Am pretty sure Mr Paxman was given the more stringent rules by someone higher up, as Mr Gascoigne is definitely more relaxed.
I always liked the warmth of Bamber Gascoigne as the host of UC. What a gentleman. RIP
Rest in Peace

I deeply recommend Bamber’s book Quest for the Golden Hare.
Fantastic show and great teams and host!!!
UWIST - my old uni!
RIP Bamber - true professional and fun. No-one betters him as chairman.
RIP - one of the best
Bamber and UC were a match made in heaven. It was a souffle in comparison to Paxman's plum duff.
Thank you indeed-wonderful!!

Yes, he was indeed the Emperor of Quiz Masters. I never met him, but I felt I knew him, because he was a natural in front of the camera.

Bamber was by far the best host
Classy man.R.I.P sir.
Bamber was far, far, better than the unnecessarily abrasive Paxman.
I agree, at least you could have a bit of a laugh with Bamber if you got an answer wrong
@@rajnirvan3336 yes. Very true. In a similar situation Paxman would have eaten your head off.
@@gregorypalamas4998 Paxman was great on Newsnight otherwise but don't like him on UC
@@rajnirvan3336 Paxman was the man to grill the lying and bumbling politicians. He's a master in that, bit like Tim Sebastian.
@@rajnirvan3336 Plenty of banter with Mr Paxman, not at all abrasive.
rest in peace Bamber.you will be missed.
RIP Bamber Gascoigne
where are they all in 2021?
Probably all retired 20 years ago
RIP Mr Gascoigne 🙏🏻
RIP Bambi, I thought that UWIST was how the Welsh pronounced UMIST in Manchester !

A mean and entirely unfounded slander of the good Mr Paxman.
@@castelodeossos3947 It's true!
Bit of long pause on the tie-break answer. Twitter would melt now.
Docherty answered a lot of starters correctly 👏👏👏
Bamber Gascoigne was a great broadcaster.

Are you a relative of Ted Loveday?
first words on this video " and their captain..."
R.I.P. Bamber Gascoigne
R.I.P Bamber Gascoigne✝
7:25 so polite! :)
she looked like a little girl being caught out.
Rip Bamber
Bamber Gasgoine was a rolls Royce. Jeremy Paxman is a ford escort!
Lada
I miss BG. Paxman is neither quick enough nor bright enough to do the job properly... or maybe he just doesn't care enough.
Bamber Gascoigne beats that clown on BBC2 into a cocked hat.
Did they ever do a US version?
It is an American format - College Bowl
The Young Ones made me come here lol
Gascoigne was the gold standard
A different style to the questions, but just as difficult.
RIP
Tough questions.
UWIST no more in 1988.
How much better was Gascoigne than the awful sneering puffed up Paxman?
Never patronising and never acting as if he knew all the answers, unlike Paxman.
UC has been dumbed down since then. No questions about lady Gaga
Lady Gaga wasn't even born in 1984...
I have been watching late 80s UC episodes and the questions are much, much easier than modern UC's.
R.I.P BAMBI NEVER RUDE TO THE CONTESTANTS LIKE PAXMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great.
I hope the whole tournament's on here. (I wont look, because I might see who goes through.)
Don't like the latest versions, with everybody in boxes and the abrasive Paxman.
Oh know when someone is so posh you can't understand what they're saying
No diversity back then
Better times.
