But the problem I see is that you are scanning (fingerprinting) your LAN but most IP numbers on internet are behind fire walls so you wouldn't get any of that information

Hello John, actually that's not true, the entire idea of Nmap is that it uses an unorthodox methodology to obtain information. All my devices on my home network also have firewalls and it was able to determine information like operating systems, network-facing services, etc.
