  • It’s no American classic, but this 1984 Tokai Breezysound is a couple of upgrades away from looking and sounding the part. Here, Huw Price shows you how to swap the bridge and sort out the controls. Read the accompanying article: guitar.com/guides/diy-worksho...

Very interesting. Thanks. What great guitars the 80’s Breezysounds are. I’ve had two and sold them both in the search for “something a bit better”. I’m not sure that I ever found it!

I’m a big fan of 80s Tokai Breezysounds, and love that original bridge, particularly for palm muting. I’m pretty sure Tokai hardware was made by Gotoh back in the 80s too.

Thx for the good video demo, nice to see it like this. Would you say the Gotoh compensated saddles are good enough intonation wise? Compared to 6 saddle bridges.

Hello from Chile... thanks for the instructions on how to "relic". How much time do you let the brass on amoniac?

Well done. I didnt know about the aging of brass using ammonia. Was the neck pickup a custom shop as well? Great surprise for your friend.

There was nothing to indicate that it was Toney, but it had cloth covered wire that looked identical to the bridge's. I believe the Tokai pickups had plastic covered wire, so I suspect it was Custom Shop too. It certainly sounded very nice - H

how come you didnt just cut the dowels to length before putting them in ? seems a safer bet than trying to flush cut afterwards

Upgrading what? Vintage look saddles but then not a vintage ashtray? Tele sound? Playability? Tuning stability? Because it's not upgrading intonation precision. The only upgrade I see here, at the expense of intonation precision, is a more comfortable bridge when it comes to palm muting and that could have been achieved by attending to the protruding grub screws on the stock bridge - replace them with shorter grub screws for $10-20, which would be the cost of purchasing several packets of different size grub screws.

With the broken off screw, you can measure the depth remaining and cut the new screw to that length and put it in as a "short" screw, leaving the old piece in there and keep the new screw straight. Is it just me or is "relicing" an act of stupidity? Parts age fast enough without assaulting them with chemicals. Maybe when he buys his next brand new guitar he could ask the shop to leave it out in the rain for a few days before he picks it up.

Love these videos, but always wince slightly at the thought that you seem to be working in your kitchen. I imagine that Mrs Huw is standing just out of shot, rolling pin and various neutralising chemicals in hand, in case you spill some noxious solution or accidentally gouge out a chunk of worktop. Or maybe that’s just my house ...

Ha ha - only when I was doing the metal relicing. Everything else was on the workbench - H

Too, much missing, totally missed the point, where is the intonation test, and what is the vibrato for, violin players use it to mask the true pitch of the note, you weren't trying to get away with that were you, well every one deserves a second chance, so come back with the missing bits and we will have another review, Good luck,
