    WATCH THIS VIDEO FIRST. I, unfortunately, watched 2 other videos about this game before this one. This was the best at explaining the game, with the bonus of a couple beginner strategies thrown in.

    My husband and his buddy played this out in Montana when they were fly fishing a month ago. They bought me this game for helping them out with their trip. We just played today for the first time. Very fun! I love it! Although.... he did actually knock the King down from the temporary line at the end of the game. I'll be filing a protest with the national office tomorrow.... Great video!

      +April Ezell Hey thanks April! Love the shot of Muir and Roosevelt in your avatar. My cousin, who still lives in Montana was the gentleman that introduced me to the sport. He's an avid fly angler as well, who was your husband fishing with, an outfitter? That behind the line to kill the king is a real gotcha, I say enforce it and congrats on the win.
      Cheers!

      +Justin Ross They went with Montana Angler near Timber Ridge. They flew into Bozeman and also went to Livingston to Dan Bailey's store. They fished the Madison and Gardiner Rivers and a couple others I can't think of off the top of my head. I'd love to tag along next time!

    No this game was not played with the bones and skulls of enemies. Was originated with wooden dowels (kastpinnar) and rectangular cuts(kubb), just like how the game comes now. As my grandfather explained it to me, is that it was played usually before leaving for a battle or not to long after. The tallest of the kubb is the Jarl/King and smallest are his vikings/pawns.

    I don't know Greg. That's how I was shown and it is really a lot of fun to play that way. Often times eager throwers will try so hard to knock a field skull down they'll wind up throwing out of bounds. Veteran players will cluster and if they get to stack 'em, great.

    As a swede I can tell you (from a little bit of investigation ;) that a more plausible theory probably is that the game was invented by some people chopping wood on their farm, throwing logs about for fun! Later on, when people from other countries started to show interested in the game, the story about the vikings was invented. It sounds more resonable dont you think? Althou much less exciting.
    The viking story is more fun thou so why not go with that!! :D

    Hi Justin. great video and i just love that you teach out playing it. and yes, the game is VERY old. if i remember correctly, it,s even from before the viking age. we still play it in both Norway and Sweden. i checked out a few other videos, and they insisted that it was just a SWEDISH game! hehehehe... the guy had blocked anyone from writing on his channel, so i gues it was some sore Norwegians (Norwegian myself.) who have nagged and nagged about it. i found a vid of me and some friends playing it on my old lap top and have just put it out. (need to get me a new set.) it,s realy fun to play it. AND it also teaches you to hit perfectly when you throw. a good aiming skill was needed when they threw rocks. you keep on playin, and let as many as posible know about the game, teach them and maybe one day we can have a world cup and play it here in Norway. DAMN that would be fun!

    The Orgins of Kubb from the Viking age is a myth, most likely ony used for advertisment
    the egyptians playd a variation of Kubb, which was picked up by the romans and then Picked up by the Persians,
    Due to Viking raids the Vikings Adopted the game from the Persians and brought it to other places like Scottland.
    "Kubb" means "blokk" so it has nothing to do with skulls.
    However its a fun story and there is nothing wrong pretending ur playing with skulls and Femurs :)

    Hey Justin, great explanation on how to play Kubb! Your dog shows great restraint by not retrieving all the skulls and femurs! Just curious, is your dog a silver lab? Thanks

      Hey Vigilant Voice, good eye, yes! Her name is Beta and she is a Silver Lab. Thanks for the compliment, however she only listens to me, and that's only sometimes. Believe there is a shot where she is all over April. Cheers!

    This looks fun! What was traditionally used as the 'king'? I'm guessing that might be the skull of the local ruler or actual King?

    • @jross3030

      That's correct, if none were available a tribe leader, mayor or respected elder.

    Thanks for the video! Is it just me, or does this give a clear advantage to whoever goes first, since they don't have to clear any field skulls their first turn?

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  7 років тому +2

      Good point, and yes, for sure, that's why it's a game of skill to see who gets to go first, the closest to the king without touching it. My strategy is to draw first blood on the opening round and stay on them!

    • @jgraffis
      @jgraffis 6 років тому +3

      I know this is super late, but the US championship uses a 2-4-6 open to account for this meaning that the first team to go only throws 2 batons/femurs, the next team throws 4, then the first team throws 6 and it stays there. I guess this still gives the first team an advantage for skillfully throwing that first femur closest to the king, but they can't just skunk an opponent the first throw.

      Thanks BushRat253, good question. I've had great success with the canvas bag by Old Time Games. I've used it for years, and I use it for sets I've made and given as gifts. www.oldtimegames.com/accessories2.html

    When I knock over a defensive skull, is that thrown back to my side or is it taken out of the game? Great vid btw!

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  3 роки тому +3

      Hey Sam, thanks for the question. So you can decide beforehand how you're going to treat the field skulls.
      2 ways of playing:
      1. When a field skull is knocked over, it's thrown out of the game.
      2. When a field skull is knocked over, it's thrown into your opponents field to become their defender and must be knocked over first.
      Perosonally, I like #2. You will get more opportunities to move up as field skulls remain out there. #1 might move the game along slightly faster, but there are more long distance tosses from the back row without an army out there defending the back row skulls.
      As long as you decide up front, they are both fun ways to play. Perhaps play a game or two #1 style, then #2 for more of a challenge.

      Aye, but a journeyman, and any man worth his salt, should be able to find and build a quick set from firewood, just about anywhere they roam! They were probably mostly carpenters, after all and skilled woodworkers. And failing that, one need only vanquish ten foes and harvest dem bones! Thanks for this alternative to bocce. I will definitely be building and trying out a set this year!

    Great video! Thank you so much!
    We just started playing last night and while my wife was adding skulls she knocked on over so they would usually be stacked, but then the thrown skull continued to roll out of bounds.
    To settle our "debate" ;) How would you handle that situation?

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  10 років тому +1

      Thanks BenjaminBustard.
      Now, I think I understand your question. If your wife's skull knocked down a field skull, then continued to roll out of bounds, no problem. As soon as she knocks the field skull down she's good, regardless of where it goes from there. That's the reward for hitting the target.
      Miss it however, and roll out of bounds, and it's yours to place wherever you want within 1 femurs length of the king. That's the risk you take for missing or firing too aggressively and not striking your target.
      Hope that helps, keep on chunking.

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Kelly, yes, that's what this set was made from, the rods were the femurs and the landscape timer the skulls, but have experimented with different material. Cousin has one made from old ax handles. I posted plans on my blog, which I updated the link in this video description. Cheers!

    In your example the bone crushers knocked over 2 skulls. Those skulls were then tossed into the play zone by a Pillager. The Bone crusher then stands the skulls straight up. The Pillager then attempts to knock over those 2 skulls before going for the ones in the back. My question is, what if the Pillager only knocked over 1 out of those 2 skulls thrown into the play zone? What happens to that one skull? Does it just get stood back up because not all of them in playing zone were knocked over? Or... Does the bone crusher get to put it back on his back line with the others?

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  5 років тому +1

      Nate Adams good question. Any skull that gets knocked down is thrown back into your court to defend your back row, so it’s not all or nothing.

    • @jross3030
      @jross3030  5 років тому +1

      Nate Adams oh, and you wouldn’t ever add to your back row, once they get knocked down, they are thrown back and forth as field skulls.

    oh boy..
    could you make clear these are NOT the official rules please?
    the official and standardised rules are a bit different, also the field and block size are strictly regulated. so i suggest using official kubb sets if you want to train for competitive matches (European or World championships for example)
