UP's five-headed monster is their guard rotation. Cagulangan-Felicilda-Alarcon-Abadiano and now Fortea is back. Best collection of guards in the UAAP, and IMHO UP's most fearsome weapon. Every single one of these dudes are good enough to start for any other collegiate team at present.

Ateneo should really lean more on Mason Amos, who is potentially their most efficient scorer. Taking into consideration his performance in the past few games, I genuinely believe he has what it takes to become a star and lead the team in the future. However, looking at the bigger picture, it's clear that Ateneo faces an uphill battle against UP right now, mainly due to the fact that Ateneo has eight rookies on the team. Yes, you read that correctly, EIGHT rookies. In contrast, UP has several veterans who could easily start for other UAAP teams, as the other person in the comment section mentioned. That's just how well-stocked and experienced the UP team is compared to the relatively inexperienced Ateneo squad. Nonetheless, congratulations to UP for their well-deserved win. It's not surprising at all that they're the favorites to be this year's champions.
UP has 6 rookies not including the reserve. And 2 transferees in Torres and Felicilda.

If you understood Coach Tab's interview when he set an expectation for your community, he said it's a learning curve. Meaning, they have to go down deep before they go back up. From a spectator, I say, trust his process. After all he won't be dubbed as the best Coach with best system in the Philippines.

Tab was hyped to be all about player development than talent. If so, why haven’t his veteran players developed- Chiu, Lazaro, Credo, Quitevis, even Koon- they’re playing at the same level as before- and so he has to depend on his “ young, rookie team” who’s now responsible for their standing?
Well there are athletes who are eager to develop their skill while others are just fine with what they have. SA na mention mo they seemed to be slacking Kita namn SA galaw wlang improvement unlike the previous season blue eagles na hnd nman kagalingan but improvements is evident. Anong pare-pareho nasa F4. Two years ago, feu/dlsu kasali sa F4. Last year, pinalitan sila ng nu/adu. Previous to these, nakakapasok din uste, even contending for the crown. Ue lang di pa nakakapasok uli sa F4 in quite a while, at mukhang malabo pa ren sila this year kahit hosts sila

@@lalaland1084 to be honest, I wasn’t expecting Ateneo to be this competitive this season. They’re well coached but it’s a team on rebuild. Actually, UP is also on a rebuild as 2 of their top 3 players (Tamayo and Lucero) have departed. But, seeing Cansino back and healthy, that’s a big boost. And this rookie, Lopez, may not be scoring heavily but he’s been a big impact player for them off the bench

UP guards are more reliable than Ateneo. Ateneo guards are a bunch of scared to be the go to guy. Just look at turn overs and indecision. If this continues it will be a miracle if Ateneo can reach the final 4 which as of this juncture very unlikely.
except Jared Brown. Guy was fearless in this game. Anyway relax, Ateneo already beat them in round 1. Rivalries are a trade of wins, not one side winning all the games.

@@167kinggam Chris Koon is the one that underperformed the most this game. If he would've hit even 30% of his FG this game, it's quite possible that Ateneo would've won this game. Unfortunately, he had a 0/10 FG this game. That is definitely a huge factor for this Ateneo loss. Also, they should lean more into Mason Amos since he is quite possibly the most efficient player in terms of scoring on their roster, I believe he has the potential to be a star and lead Ateneo in the future.

Rebuilding is a word that describes ADMU this season. However, this word became more prevalent as of recent because of the performance the team has been producing, a 4-5 win/loss record. It is worth wondering if this word accurately depicts the team because the word becomes a convenient refuge for the tacticians behind the bench to justify the current situation.
Let us examine the line-up.
These players are either sophomores, juniors or veterans already: Koon, Balungay, Lazaro, Gomez, Credo, Chui and Quiteves. Those are seven players with finals and final four experiences. These could have been nine had they opted not to bump off the roster Kyles Ong and Paul Garcia.
These players on one hand, are either training with the team before the pandemic already or have been in Team B for the previous years: Obasa, Espinosa, Bongo. They are not new to CTB’s system.
True rookies are Tuano, Amos and Gamber. They are blue chip recruits that showcased their talents in the youth Gilas program. One of them is even a stand out in the seniors Gilas program touted to dominate the league.
Side note is that they did not even line up Kobe Demisana, a 6-8 behemoth and a mythical five member of the jrs UAAP, owing to the abundance of their choices.
Experience wise they have seven players who have the necessary and significant experience already and add to that three players who are not new to the system of CTB.
Moreover, they have solid eight to nine months of preparation for the season which I deem sufficient already to master the system of CTB. Remember it only took two solid months of bubble preparation for a rag tag team of young players (coming from different schools and B. league) to end the Korean curse and give a Serbian team a run for their money. So chemistry shouldn’t be a problem anymore if you make the comparison.
Also, when it comes to talent available ADMU is very formidable. They have arguably the best set of shooters in the tournament with Amos, Brown, Koon, Balunggay, Nieto and Gomez. Their frontline is towering with Obasa, Balunggay, Chui and Amos. They have Gamber, Nieto and Tuano to give them energy and shooting off the bench if utilized properly. They have Brown, who is blossoming to be a capable manning the PG chores.
We could not make the argument that they were unable to win because of the dearth in talent. They were beaten by ADU and FEU twice, teams that have an inferior talent pool in their roster. You can even argue that NU has lesser fire power compared to Ateneo. Almost lost to UE.
With all these points, we should be cautious in using the word “rebuilding” as a catch all word in dismissing the mediocre performance of the team as of late. Accountability should be demanded from those we ought to demand from.
People are not ignorant of this and don’t buy the rebuilding narrative anymore. They know it’s propaganda to reduce expectations of the team defending its title.
Exactly! Thank you for putting all our thoughts as UP fans into words. Sadly, this will become an unpopular opinion as most students, alumni, the community and fans of UAAP basketball believe the narrative Ateneo are underdogs, the team is in its rebuilding years and is a young team compared to other UAAP teams because it consists of 8 rookies. Media also played a big part of it. Let's state what isn't obvious to other people. Clearly, they whoever these people are want to package Ateneo with a story of underdog team to champion. That's where the story lies.
According to PISA, Filipinos have low critical thinking skill. So, it kind of speaks for the data. So sad! 😢

Whatever the reason for this propaganda, whether to provide an excuse in case Ateneo fails to defend its title, or to create drama around a team that has lost its mass appeal, nothing beats the genuine Cinderella story of UP MBT whichever way you look at it. The underdog to champion story truly belongs to UP, just look at the totality of UAAP history. No one, not even media, can cheat history.

Ateneo lost Dave, BJ, SJ, Raffy and especially Ange. They lost a lot of PG and senior experience. No offense to Quitevis and Chiu but have veteran presence in the PG position is very crucial especially in tight match ups
