The first time I listened to this song I felt that it is dedicated to her "younger" self (because she "lost" her real name to become IU), but after her exhibition at MMA in 2017 I think this song is dedicated to all the "forgotten" people in the world (dead or alive).

"Zezè" also came to my mind: I love that song, and I always feel a contrast, as if she likes her "world of fame", but also hates it.

A hint to the song's meaning is English gendered terms 'he/she' are non-gendered in Korean. So when she sings about the the child as 'he' in translation in Korean its non-gendered. She's likely singing about her childhood self that is lost and she wants to reconnect with.

I heard that IU and Kim Eana (They collaborated for write this song's lyrics) made this song for Sewol Ferry Tragedy victims. Their families still waiting for them because many of them are unfound and just memory of their name. It's break my heart in pieces when I knew this.

Hey, if you like to explore the side of "IU" as lyricist, i recommend you to watch her Homebody Signal episode with Kim Eana... If I remember correctly, IU had difficulty finishing the lyrics for "Dear Name" and she sought Kim Eana's help in finishing this one.. I think the song is meant for everyone (who is forgotten), not just one particular "name"..
Everytime i hear this song it gets me so emotional, this song is so beautiful. Always reminds me of that time when idols became emotional when she sang this as a tribute to Jonghyun, literally breaks my heart.

IU had invited a group of singers and musicians who haven’t been able to be in the spotlight fame, they are chorus members who sing backup for popular musicians, street performers, trainees were not able to make a name in the competitive music industry yet and remain largely unknown. IU gave their chance to shine on stage and let their names be known.
This song was for the korea ferry accident that happened a few years ago. Many children died and were trapped in a sinking boat, the response from the government to help the children was so poorly done that it was widely criticised in korea that those kids couldve been saved had they responded better

I know this is too much to ask for the the reaction of 1 song but you have to check out the Dear Name MMA 2017 stage, it was phenominal. Back then it was the talk of the town and make many casual listeners became Uaenas. Until now, people still search for it & talk about it. It was said to be one of the best stages ever in MMA history and also for IU's. A small spoiler is: She didn't sing it alone.

As long as I know IU never officially explained what this song is about but many Korean who listened this song reminded of one of the most tragic accident that happened in Korea which is Sewol ferry disaster. Most of passengers, especially high school students who were going on a school trip, died in the accident. The ferry was flipped over, search and rescue process took lots of days, family of passengers were waiting to hear their family's name from rescued list. Over 300 passengers died in the cold sea. I myself too think of Sewol ferry when I first listened to this song.

On April 19, 2014, a ship called the Sewol sank off South Korea's West Sea. The accident killed 304 people, most of them young high school students. Because they were on a school trip. Due to the irresponsible behavior of the captain at the time, she was waiting on board the ship and was buried in the water.
