FZ1 Video Tutorial - Generator Inspection

- After reading about some FZ1 Generators having problems, I decided that I would open up the cover to check and see if there was any need to change the bearings or any other parts of the Generator. I originally was going to replace the bearings but after checking all the parts and finding no problems, decided that I would simply reinstall everything. So it shows all of the steps I used to open up and remove the generator and then reinstall.
Just my opinion but those epoxied magnets are ticking time bombs. Approximately 30% failure rate with some causing catastrophic engine failure. It is costly but since you already had it out I would've swapped it. Peace of mind and potentially saving your engine is priceless in my opinion. Great video though and great tutorial.
where is the evidence of a 30% failure rate?
my 08 fz1 at 55k miles needed some work new timeing chain, guides, valves shimed, plugs, then the shop told me ,they found a grinding sound n vibration wen turned engine by hand!it was the stator bushings! worn out caused scrapeing, then after replaceing the bushings it was not scrapeing or vibeing any more, could be the start of stator disintergrating! if i did not take bike to shop could have ended bad!now shes got 73k n still runing strong! love the vids keep it up!
Thanks, helped a ton when changing my rotor. Bikes is at 13k and old rotor was pristine. Changed it so I don't have to worry about it.
There are two bullet shaped guides located between the cover and the engine ( you can see them on 6:30 ). Be carefull when you remove the cover because they come out loose and i had one fallen into the engine. I had to tear down half the bike so i can get to the oil pan and retreive it.The funny thing is that they are not magnetic so you cannot pull them from the top. Its a pain in the ass believe me and you need another 2 new gaskets to reinstall the pan.
I talked to a Yamaha mechanic about buying a seconhand fz1. He said the one thing I should do to the bike is replace the stator rotor if it hasn't been upgraded yet..
Nice one! Really like your videos fella. I also really like the way you're keeping the fz1 current. Keep them coming!!
Sehr gute Anleitung, bitte Kommentare auch beachten. Beim Ausbau den Rotor am besten durch die mittlere Öffnung gegenhalten.
Another great video. Thanks a million.
The updated rotors are not cheap, but the old style can fail suddenly and without warning, and when it does, it releases shapnel into the engine.
Since it appears I am stuck with my '06 until I die (not willing to sell a great bike for pizza and beer money), I bit the bullet and got the updated rotor. Thanks for the video! My '06 only has 27K miles on it and has been flawless. I wager it will be with me until the end...
You buy oem rotor?
@@mobleyMobley Yes. Alas, I plan to sell the bike soon for the aforementioned "pizza and beer money". I am the original owner of an '06, that is a pretty good run!
I dunno, 300 bucks cad for the RMstator rotor and gasket is pretty cheap compared to new engine.
Hi, great tutorial, it always baffled me how did Yamaha build a such an amazing machine and decided to completely cut corner in a name of whatever by introducing this prone to fail concept....
Great video
Wow. That was a really good quality video. Thank you
At least this helps me understand the assembly of my FZ8 :)
Great video! Excellent detail! Thank you!
+DesertFZ1Ryder Thanks, and your welcome
Ok, swapped my rotor yesterday. A couple of things. First of all your video was very helpful. Thanks! But you are missing the washer and spacer (which has an o-ring inside of it) that sits on the axle after the starter-clutch. I.e in between the starter-cluch and the inner bearing. It can't be seen on your video that you put them onto the rotor-axle but I hope that you actually did put them on but just didn't show it. ;)
Pretty sure its on there I must have cut that clip during editing
Are there any symptoms the bike will experienced if it was failing and coming apart? I just bought a 2014 fz1 with only 6k miles.
I’ve only had it for couple days and haven’t ridden it much yet but during a cold start it would take at least 2 tries but once warmed up it has no problem starting. Previous owner said it wasn’t ridden much and sat for awhile so I’m not sure if that has to do with it.
If your flywheel looks like that with the magnets exposed, make sure you buy the upgraded version to replace it, so it dont blow your engine up when the glue for the magnets come loose. Unless your selling it soon 🤷♂️ im about to install the upgraded version on my r1 🙈
Tg his was very informative iam looking at a 2009 FZ1 with 9k on the dash barley ridden by the owner. I wanted to seek out major problems before i pulled the trigger. If you see my page youll see the bikes i have owned. I like the sport touring style bikes out of them all
is there a trick to removing the inner and outer bearings? i was hoping you'd show how those were removed and reinstalled.
The bearings aren't the issue. The issue lies with the rotor. The epoxy used to glue the magnets deteriorates and then the magnets falls off, hopefully only destroying your stator and rotor. If you are unlucky it grenades your motor. The new rotors are upgraded where the magnets are encased in metal and cant fall off. Well worth the upgrade since when they go bad, it just goes without any warnings.
Good video but I would have replaced the rotor since you already had it apart.
i had to get a used engine from using regular car oil for awhile; and a new starter clutch generator, now if u ever put a new engine in, know that there's 2 little spacers in the inside of the frame and u cant see Them ! \ and if u change the thermostat you want to start it and let it idle a long, long time causing the antifreeze to bond to the hoses , so the anti freeze don't just shot out ever time u drive it !
I have a 2001 Yamaha FZ1000. I'm having to rebuild the bottom of the carburetor. Leaking fuel, now engine oil is full of fuel. Wish me luck in getting it back together.
thanks for the sites on the FZ1!
Nice I thought you stopped making videos, your FZ1 is looking quite different now!
+Bikers Quest Been kind of busy lately, the new parts on the FZ1 are part of the reason. I will have another video up soon that details them. Thanks for watching.
Wow wow wow, where are the last two pieces ( washer plate and spacer )?You did not put it back on the assembly.
I ordered an OEM just in case if and when I hear any odd sound coming from the flywheel. My fz1 only has 15k miles. I've heard too many horror stories and some where replacement wasn't needed. I'm ambivalent but better safe than sorry..
How’s your rotor now? How many miles without an issue?
Great video, thanks!
I'm going to do this on my FZ1-N 2008. Want to replace the original rotor with the new version just to be safe.
One thing though; on the picture from the service manual you showed there is a O-ring displayed. Couldn't see it anywhere in your video though? Is it inside the spacer or where is it?
잘봤습니다.감사합니다.
my fly wheel on my fz1 came all apart amd destroyed the stator with it. had to remove oil pan to clean it out. .
How did you pull that magnet off!?!
When did the new rotor come out ? I have a late 2013 at 17,000kms
2015
Part number for the bearings? My outer one is noisy
Are you going to make those new parts available to purchase? Im liking the headlight and radiator covers a lot! How many miles are people seeing these bearings go out at?
+88Grossboy Yes. I have another video coming in right behind this one with details. Stay tuned.
thanks for the vids!very helpfull! i just had my stator explode!its a 08 fz1 she got 79k+ thought it was the batery, nope got new one still dead! checked regulator rectifier, replaced that, nope still ,finaly test stator with volt meter dead stator opend her up,aaaahhhh magnets seperated looks melted!,its bin 4 weeks im not rideing going nuts waiteing for parts! TIP- YAMAHASPORTS PLAZA .com IN CALORADO HAS THE LOWEST OEM PARTS ANY WARE! MY ROTOR USED $353 they had it $332oem with revised part # i just got parts so after work i get a littel bit finished! that outer rotor bearing was a bich! how do you get it out with out damageing it?and replaceing it?
Hello. Great informative video. Do you by chance know, if the bolt you are unscrewing at 3:09 has an o-ring in there? I ask this, because my fz1 is dripping oil, precisely bellow that bolt. Thanks for any input.
Yes, I am pretty sure there was an o-ring there.
Yup, I can confirm that. In my case, the O-ring was good, problem was that the Bolt was cracked because of a bike side fall. Anyway, problem solved. Thank you very much for your time.
How many miles at swap out?
or the placenta?
Do you have the part number to the bearings?
Hey you changed exactly FZ1 only impeller?
Do you have any advice on how to remove the rotor from the stator. I can't seem to over power the the magnet connection. I may just be too weak right now, but it seem like you just popped it off by hand.
If I were to do it again I would use the ball driver to hold the rotor firmly into the rear bearing while I pry the cover and stator away from the case.
Erick Miller did you ever get it out? I’m having the same issue
buelle109 could you send a link to the ball driver you are referring to?
What year is your fz1?
Do Gen II Fz1's have the magnet issue? Mine is a Gen II 2011...
Yes, it is the Gen 2's from 2006 thru I believe 2012. At some point they knew there was a problem and redesigned these parts.
@@buelle109 I'm wondering whether I should take a look at the stator one day. I really don't know if my motorcycle is affected though. Thanks a mil. I've watched a lot of your videos and have learnt quite a bit from it :)
Fzs.🎉 1000 sempre
hi, where can i get the back seat cover, is it from some other motorcycle?
www.copperdawg.com/
Hi, I'm not sure if you're still riding the fz1.. but i'd like to know the symptoms of magnetic coil failure if you know any?
So far those that have had the failure have not said that there was any indication before failure. And yes I am still riding the FZ1
Check the voltage at your battery, if it is anything less than 13v @ idle there is an issue with your charging system (which may be the stator, or rotor magnets or the R/R)
there is a high pitched whizzing sound, sounds kinda like gear driven cams. Then you battery will simply die and the bike wont start. Mine just failed. 06 model
@@mechanicalman4531 how many miles?
@@thankthemosthighgod9135 40,000 k's
What size allen wrench do you need for the big center cap on the cover?
That cap requires a 10mm allen
@@buelle109 Thank you very much!
Anyone know how the FZS Fazer1000 comes apart ?
You mean the whole bike?LOL....I think you need a service manual brother
@@jeffspears8801 🤣🤣🤣 yes I think you'd be right 😄
is this a generation 2 fz1?
Yes, 2007
@@buelle109 i take it that my 2004 is still possibly liable for the stator damage.
@@jayminasi6073 I believe gen 2’s start @2006. And later gen2’s( not sure how later but like last yr or two) had a from factory “fix” , meaning they changed the design
@@vicpnut1 what about the 13 model ?
@@DaRuler66 i wanna say that yamaha finally fixed it by 13…but its been awhile and i cant recall specifically ….also just did a quick search and now specific years came up just how to’s and sales etc….i know i read in one or more forums im in of a year they finally fixed it ,all i can remember is is was way after they knew about the rotor failure ,like last yr or two of production..
Still noisy 🤣
What sort of mileage are these failing?
Don't think it is as mileage related as one would suspect some bikes got it as early as 10K some are over 40K without a problem.
