    Synology provided a NAS and some drives to check out, but naturally, from a Budget Nerd video, I will tell it like it is.

    Great review! I bought the DS220+ in large part because of this review. I have a quick question. I am only getting a read/write speed of about 6MB/S. What am i doing wrong?

      Too many things to isolate the source.
      Here are some tips:
      Your router could be too slow. Make sure your modem and router are upgraded for gigabit internet and make sure your router is set up properly for multiple devices and high throughput.
      Make sure your ram is upgraded to 8gb instead of 2gb or 4gb 2666mhz ram.
      You're running it on ethernet right? Always use ethernet instead of wifi, and make sure to use CAT6 cables.
      Use Sata SSD instead of HDD or at least use NVME Cache.
      Make sure all software on the device and your other devices is updated. Reboot all devices.
      Beyond that, it sounds like your unit could be defective if none of that helps.

    Nice. As a ds216+II owner it's pretty solid. Wished it had two ethernet ports like yours.
    Syncing with another synology off-site is pretty easy without needing to be familiar with rsync commands.

    Can it be configured to accept automatic uploads from cell phones? For example, pics and video that we take automatically get pushed to the Samsung or Google cloud from our phones.

    Hi! awesome vid, enjoy watching your contents (: Recently I puchased a DS1621+ too and everything has been doing good. The only thing I would like to ask is do you do snapshots to backup your files in case your folder gets corrupted, crashes or infected by malware? I am using snapshot replication (alongside with hyper backup) but I'm unsure what is the recommended frequency snapshots and how many saved snapshots are needed.

    What happens if the Synology NAS Hardware fails after some years but not the disks?

    I have two Synology NAS (218-220+), disappointed to note that the 220+, suffers from the same problem of a small annoying fan noise, even at low speed. The fan in question and that equips both NAS, is a Y.S. Tech of Chinese manufacture and basic characteristicas, nothing special. Solution: change the fan for one of better quality, in my case the same Noctua NF-A9 model that I had already installed in the 218, now both run at medium speed and are inaudible.

      @@isleofgreg Exactly, there are NAS that come with 4 pin and others with 3, the 4 pin fan is suitable for both types. It does not necessarily need to be a Noctua, any fan of known brand and of the same specifications is enough.

      @BudgetNerd  2 роки тому

  • @joetroiani1781
    @joetroiani1781 2 роки тому

    Synology make a great budget NAS. I would only grab the 2 bay if you are only backing up data files. If you doing media, for a few hundred more get the 4 or 5 bay + series NAS. I started with a DS918+. But the motherboard crapped out like 2 months after warranty expired. Synology wouldn’t do anything for me. But their DSM OS is so good with their proprietary SHR (Synology hybrid raid) that I replaced it with a DS920+ with the 517 5 bay expansion. I also have the WD PR4100. Then I want some power under the hood. So I now have the QNAP TVS-H1288x. I added 128g of ddr4 ECC RAM. I 5g GPU. So the QNAP is the best for hardware. The QNAP OS is good too. But if you want hardware and power buy a QNAP. if you want easy of setup and use with excellent OS get Synology. But I wouldn’t get any NAS with less that 4 bays.

    And Steve Baker
    Technical Support Engineer write me about my problem that
    We are sorry to hear that your DS218 has to be reset. This is likely caused by an issue in the DSM operating-system.
    We understand that you are worried about losing your data. Please rest assured, your data should not be affected by the reset as the OS and data are stored in separate partitions on the drives. When re-installing the OS, the system should normally not touch the data-partitions of your drives.

    At the time of writing this I am right now giving my DS220+ a second chance. (The first time, in the end, it needed 40 minutes to "receive" a 514 MB folder...).
    How fast is a NAS supposed to be?
    It took 36 minutes to "receive" 9.49 GB of files.
    I see no real advantage of a NAS (like this one) over external USB drives.
    The risk of losing data with one external USB drive is "neutralized" by having two (or more) external USB hard drives. AND if I use the two 3 TB drives now in the NAS as external USB drives, I would have 6 TB instead of 3 TB, or 100%, of storage space available.
    For regular home users I see no point in having a NAS. Just get a few external USB drives (that'll be cheaper, too). I won't be buying a NAS again.

    • @ibizenco

      It depends on your network. In gigabit network it should run around 110 MB/s. Wifi is of course slower.
