Find it on Amazon: amzn.to/3vIygUu
Synology provided a NAS and some drives to check out, but naturally, from a Budget Nerd video, I will tell it like it is.

Just acquired the exact same NAS and drives. Loving it.
Looking forward to this possibly being my family NAS for pictures & videos to back up from our cameras and to access via apps so no more replying on Google photos
Great review! I bought the DS220+ in large part because of this review. I have a quick question. I am only getting a read/write speed of about 6MB/S. What am i doing wrong?
Too many things to isolate the source.
Here are some tips:
Your router could be too slow. Make sure your modem and router are upgraded for gigabit internet and make sure your router is set up properly for multiple devices and high throughput.
Make sure your ram is upgraded to 8gb instead of 2gb or 4gb 2666mhz ram.
You're running it on ethernet right? Always use ethernet instead of wifi, and make sure to use CAT6 cables.
Use Sata SSD instead of HDD or at least use NVME Cache.
Make sure all software on the device and your other devices is updated. Reboot all devices.
Beyond that, it sounds like your unit could be defective if none of that helps.
Nice. As a ds216+II owner it's pretty solid. Wished it had two ethernet ports like yours.
Syncing with another synology off-site is pretty easy without needing to be familiar with rsync commands.
Can it be configured to accept automatic uploads from cell phones? For example, pics and video that we take automatically get pushed to the Samsung or Google cloud from our phones.
very nice to-the-point review. Thank you fo that
Hi! awesome vid, enjoy watching your contents (: Recently I puchased a DS1621+ too and everything has been doing good. The only thing I would like to ask is do you do snapshots to backup your files in case your folder gets corrupted, crashes or infected by malware? I am using snapshot replication (alongside with hyper backup) but I'm unsure what is the recommended frequency snapshots and how many saved snapshots are needed.
Love it :D really wish for something like this with hdd for my backups :D
What happens if the Synology NAS Hardware fails after some years but not the disks?
I have two Synology NAS (218-220+), disappointed to note that the 220+, suffers from the same problem of a small annoying fan noise, even at low speed. The fan in question and that equips both NAS, is a Y.S. Tech of Chinese manufacture and basic characteristicas, nothing special. Solution: change the fan for one of better quality, in my case the same Noctua NF-A9 model that I had already installed in the 218, now both run at medium speed and are inaudible.
Good to know.
Is the fan connection a normal 4 pin fan connector?
@@Hans.Dewitt Hi, it is a 3 pin connector PWM fan 92 mm in the series DS 218, 220 normaly. Also Corsair and Zalman are very quiets (max 2000 rpm)
@@juanluisvalenciaga6060 I just looked up Noctua NF-A9 on Amazon and its clearly 4-pin, so is this still the right one to get?
@@isleofgreg Exactly, there are NAS that come with 4 pin and others with 3, the 4 pin fan is suitable for both types. It does not necessarily need to be a Noctua, any fan of known brand and of the same specifications is enough.
can I place DS220+ 90deg left, to keep the HDD inside it in horizontal orientation ?
In theory yes, but you would block some of the vents.
Do you think it's necessary to install one of the antivirus packages?
Depends, I guess on how you use it. For me it's prob not necessary
I just bought one today from Amazon today I hope this one is better then Wd pr2100 model im about to send back to Amazon that one its good but it couldn't transcode my 4k movies with plex at all plus I couldn't manually update the plex server software
So what's the verdict with transcoding movies with Plex? I'm mainly interesting in 1080p
Its good but I went ahead spent a extra 100 and bought the Ds720+ I wanted the extra quad core processing power
Why don’t these devices use? SSD drive solid-state drives? Are not they much faster?
They do use SSD. Any Sata drives are accepted including HDDs and SSDs.
lo recomiendas si solo quiero un servidor multimedia para el hogar?
yo lo tengo corriendo plex y funciona muy bien.
is it support maximum up to 6TB only per bay or it can support up to 10TB?
Looks like it will support up to 16TB per bay, totalling 32TB of space. Obviously your usable space would be a bit less than this though.
Synology make a great budget NAS. I would only grab the 2 bay if you are only backing up data files. If you doing media, for a few hundred more get the 4 or 5 bay + series NAS. I started with a DS918+. But the motherboard crapped out like 2 months after warranty expired. Synology wouldn’t do anything for me. But their DSM OS is so good with their proprietary SHR (Synology hybrid raid) that I replaced it with a DS920+ with the 517 5 bay expansion. I also have the WD PR4100. Then I want some power under the hood. So I now have the QNAP TVS-H1288x. I added 128g of ddr4 ECC RAM. I 5g GPU. So the QNAP is the best for hardware. The QNAP OS is good too. But if you want hardware and power buy a QNAP. if you want easy of setup and use with excellent OS get Synology. But I wouldn’t get any NAS with less that 4 bays.
112 MB per second through ethernet cable ? Is that correct ?
Yes, bit vs byte
I had problem about my synology nas
And Steve Baker
Technical Support Engineer write me about my problem that
We are sorry to hear that your DS218 has to be reset. This is likely caused by an issue in the DSM operating-system.
We understand that you are worried about losing your data. Please rest assured, your data should not be affected by the reset as the OS and data are stored in separate partitions on the drives. When re-installing the OS, the system should normally not touch the data-partitions of your drives.
I beleived and i did what he said now all my data erased omg i shocked after sir Steve Baker dissepeared i am alone there is nothing in my hands
Synology is regret bad nas choose qnap there isnt good support for problemss !!!
There is no good service and support becarefullll!!!
Would a 2 bay nas be enough for movies?
Sure, as long as it supports hard drives that are big enough and as long as you don't have a collection as big as Netflix.
look at me nodding trying to pretend i understand the technicalities.
They only thing you need to know is that's it is the simplest way to get access to all the cool services the nerdy people run on their local networks :)
I have a 918+ and I love it like a child. I am decently competent at Linux but basically need nothing of that to get this up and running.
Think this guy it talking a completely different language to me! Haven’t got a clue that he’s going on about! Think I’ll leave it!
I cringed when you placed it next to the big speaker (magnet). Am I living in the past?
Good observation... That speaker isn't that big, so it's fine.
This is crazy. I have the exact same Panasonic speaker from 1999/2000! 😂
Bel video che hd mi consigli pensavo non meno di 6 tera ma che modello
i like your videos
Can this be used over WiFi or Ethernet only?
No built in wifi
Can you insert a SATA 2.5" SSD into this NAS?
Not without an adapter
What brand of ram do i need to get ik its DDR4
*how could you have write speed only 112 mb/s when official info of the product says max write speed 192 MB/s??*
Because the official speeds is only theoretical. There are alot of variables to consider; router speed, cables, and drive speeds all play a role.
Can i use it as a time machine to back up my Imac?
Yes
can I use it with single hard disk?
Yes
Can you use Emby with it?
It can run anything that can run on Docker so yes. I'm running Jellyfin for all my TV-Shows and Movies on my 918+. If you depend on transcoding make sure the unit you buy can handle those needs.
Can you tell me what size HD you have to install ? I want two 12 TB ones. Also I take it the menu your showing is the OS , so this can run my plex without the use of a computer
If I recall, two 4TB drives were provided to me, but it will accept a wider variety of sizes. Yes you can run a plex server on it.
@@BudgetNerd I mean the actual size. Like are they all the same? I believe 3.5 ?
Oh.. yeah they are 3.5
I put a very fast 8gb Samsung ram stick in my Synology
How much did this help transfer speed?
It wouldn't help with transfer speeds
@@mikasky1698 it doesn't help transfer speed. It helps with task management. It helps with stuff like encoding on PLEX and how many programs can run on the NAS at one time or how man devices that can access the NAS at one time.
At the time of writing this I am right now giving my DS220+ a second chance. (The first time, in the end, it needed 40 minutes to "receive" a 514 MB folder...).
How fast is a NAS supposed to be?
It took 36 minutes to "receive" 9.49 GB of files.
I see no real advantage of a NAS (like this one) over external USB drives.
The risk of losing data with one external USB drive is "neutralized" by having two (or more) external USB hard drives. AND if I use the two 3 TB drives now in the NAS as external USB drives, I would have 6 TB instead of 3 TB, or 100%, of storage space available.
For regular home users I see no point in having a NAS. Just get a few external USB drives (that'll be cheaper, too). I won't be buying a NAS again.
2 hours 6 minutes to upload 2.24 GB... I think I'm going to use the hard drives as external USB drives... -.-
Put one of the HD's in an external USB3 enclosure and copied the same 2.24 GB to the HD.
It took 20 minutes.
What’s a regular home user? I have enough files that a NAS makes sense when I want to have access to all my files at once without having to worry about connecting externals.
@@verbatim411411 With "regular home user" I mean people like my sister or my parents, for whom configuring a (Synology) NAS is out of their reach (let alone them dealing with "issues" like the slow speed of my DS220+).
It depends on your network. In gigabit network it should run around 110 MB/s. Wifi is of course slower.
