You're like a young Mr Rogers. And that is the largest compliment I could give you. People young and old are mesmerized by you and how you approach and interview special people. Teaching us, without us feeling like we are being schooled. Our hearts and knowledge grow bigger because of you. God Bless.

Hey Chris. Just wanted to share a recent story about how this channel has helped me immensely! My girlfriend has a sister who is an intellectually disabled adult. I have never been around any disabled adult before her. I was nervous to meet her for the first time- but, thanks to SBSK, I felt like I had some exposure and some level of comfort. I thought back to SBSK and reminded myself that every person with a disability is unique but also just like the rest of us, and I also thought of how you treat them. This gave me the confidence to interact with her, and just the other day we made a puzzle together! I don't think I would have sought to make a connection if I hadn't been watching SBSK for so long. THANK YOU! This is so important.

As a person with a disability, thank you for this. Unsure what country you live in, but when disability is taught about in a lot of settings in Australia, it’s very much still ‘medical model’ thinking. And that leads to so many people being treated like ‘hey you must be just like this other person who has x like you’. Thank you for teaching the human side.

I’m an EMT & one of the things I was taught was to “treat the patient not the symptoms”. While it IS important to treat the symptoms during a medical emergency, we’re treating a human being & it’s important to treat them as a person not just their symptoms. We can have two cardiac patients & their symptoms are completely different.

    My Five Points:
    1. Yes. Please do this forever.
    2. I regularly recommend people watch one video from this channel per day because its the fastest way to change your life. Whereas most content will distance you from humanity, SBSK calls you in closer. Every time.
    3. Who else produces content like this? Who else is amplifying Disabled voices? Who?
    4. If you wanted I could see SBSK expanding by training / hiring a second interviewer so you could cover more states/ground.
    5. As a person with Disabilities I’ve shed many tears watching these videos just hearing a thought from my head escape the lips of someone very different from me. I struggle with loneliness, with feeling seen and heard, and being at the mercy of an exclusive society. It eases my aching heart to know I’m not the only one.

What this channel means to me- it has given me so much information about the different ways people interact with the world, how to communicate empathetically even when I'm unsure of how much the other person understands, to push myself to be silly/embarrassing if it leads to meaningful communication with someone who needs alternative communication. I've heard your affirming words of thanking people for interacting with you so many times that when an Autisic person climbed into my lap while I was watching the doctor talk to them, what sprung to my mouth was "I'm glad you're communicating with me" and I didn't feel awkward or afraid and I know I would have if I hadn't been able to see all of those SBSK interactions. I also have a much better appreciation for what access issues patients and families face so I can ask better questions when interacting with families. Another thing that's really been helpful is the number of times I've heard families say they would prefer people come up and be friendly versus staring, looking out the corner of their eye, or ushering their kids away. It's pushed me to be more intentional of having a friendly interaction with others versus hurrying on to the next thing.

Chris - You and Alyssa have changed so many of our lives for the better. Olivia was very thankful to be featured on your channel, and after it aired a lot of her classmates at surf school became kinder to her because they understood her better. Prior to that, she was mistreated by a handful of children who did soften after your interview because you showed her heart in that video and that translated with so many. I send the interview to her potential pet sitting clients so they can get to know her before meeting her because you so beautifully captured her spirit, humor, and challenges in a non-judgmental way.
I have watched every video you have posted (Olivia has watched many of them as well, and they have sparked so many great discussions) and we learn so much from each person who is brave enough to share, and we learn from your skilled interviewing style. No soap, no glamour, just honest real life situations without ‘fancy’ voice over and all kind of extra’s that must make the story ‘more’. I started to watch SBSK originally because I wanted to understand how to interact with all kinds of people with special needs. I felt like watching these videos was arming myself with experience so that when I met someone in real life with a disability I could easily overlook it and connect to them as a person. It also helped my young children to see other children who were not like them and get to know them without fear or awkwardness. And then in 2020 I ended up having a child myself with special needs! Being familiar with your videos helped me immensely with planning her birth and my approach. So many people seem to think it is a tragedy when your baby is diagnosed with a disorder or condition, and it seems almost normal to want to end that pregnancy out of fear of difficulty. But seeing the value of every person (as you demonstrate in your videos) helps to undermine that cultural bend and I am so glad for your dedication and work producing these interviews. I am also grateful that I have my baby girl! I hope that your video helps many other people to see that everyone deserves a chance to live life, be loved, and make friends.

Hi Chris - I'm a sporadic watcher. I've been following your channel for several years, but I don't go on youtube regularly; I come back for binges. So a few times a year I'll spend a few hours watching your newer videos. Sometimes I return to the channel if I want to find a first hand account of living with some particular difference or illness. For me the value of these people's stories that you share is to process my own fear of people's differences (so that I'm a more safe person for disabled folks to be around), and also as a parent to able-bodied kids (it's really easy, as a parent, to pick up performance anxiety about your child's future; it's a valuable lesson to see how the parents you're interviewing practice acceptance and letting go of control, while simultaneously working hard to give their kids the best quality of life they can. It's a bittersweet balance to reach for). ... Over the years, your channel has changed my understanding of what types of life and experiencing have value. I grew up with very meritocratic approach to value of life (the "smartest" or "most productive" deserve to live to more than others), which also puts a hierarchy of worthiness on humans vs different types of animals, etc. Your channel gave me a much more neutral and hierarchy-free view; I feel way more connected to myself and my surroundings as a result, and am deeply grateful for that.

I'm Irish. When I first came across your channel I subbed straight away.
    From a viewers perspective...
When my second boy was born there was a '?' over whether he might have cerebral palsy...he didnt as it turned out. I do remember that visit vividly and the following weeks, the tears pushing his little pram home and the sheer joy looking into his sky blue eyes as I contemplated what life might look like for us as a family...
When I watch your channel I'm brought back not to despair, but the 'joy'! THAT is what I see and it's like feeling the grass between my toes with every guest ❤
This channel is utterly good & kindness & true! It grounds me, it gives me a slap when I need one, and most of all it gives me hope....true hope that people are not mostly bad, but reach out to the good they can be when they show their own dignity by abundantly showing anothers. Xx

I teach undergraduate and graduate students working towards their special education teacher certification. The first video I saw of yours was the family with sons with FASD. This video was important to me because the most prevalent disabilities are what we call "invisible disabilities." If someone were to meet one of those young men on the street, they could never guess their diagnoses, struggles, or hopes. This family's story is also powerful because they highlight the disparity in services available, the concerns of caretakers as their children get older, and the absolute beautiful spirits of their sons.
From there, I started following your channel and now embed various videos in our lessons. My students learn the clinical definitions and characteristics of the disabilities, but those are lifeless words. Your videos showcase the human element and, I believe, are critical for moving to a society where "disability" is not really a term we use to describe the variABILITY in abilities and human experience.
There is more than enough negativity in our world today, your channel brings light and love to our world by showcasing those who bring light and love to their families and friends (and us!).

My daughter and I used to watch all your videos and loved them. She had cerebral palsy and RSD/CRPS and so wanted to be interviewed by you. She passed away over a year ago but it seems like yesterday. I still watch your videos, feels like my daughter is there too.

My takeaways from watching your videos is that we are all made in the image of God and deserve dignity, respect, and love. I see the difficulty families go through, but also the great love and drive they have to take care of their loved one. Your channel has made me aware of many disorders that I've never even heard of and its given me a new heart for the afflicted. I've contributed to research for a couple of them. Thank you for what you and your wife do. May God continue to bless you

The purpose is being met! We love learning by watching your videos. We love that a lot people have similar or very different experiences when they tell their stories.

Chris, this channel is my happy place for when I'm feeling down. It's by far the primary UA-cam channel I follow and care about. (I watch a non-SBSK video probably once every two months.) I have a huge passion for disabled individuals that I think can only be explained as being something God ingrained in me before birth, because until recently I had no specific experiences with disabled people (no disabled family members or friends or anyone I knew working with disabled individuals). Something in me has always lit up when I see someone who is clearly different from others (disabled or not). I also believe there is really no such thing as a normal person, but when it comes to disabled people and people easily isolated or alienated from the general population (whether intentional or not) the compassion and almost more so the pure joy that comes to me when I see or interact with these individuals is one of my favorite blessings in my life. Without knowing them I can truly say I love the people you bring to light on your channel. It is so special and encouraging to see these incredibly unique individuals, almost always with huge struggles (and their families!) talk about their lives and be emboldened on camera. You're bringing diversity and uniqueness to light in an authentic way. I watch the channel to be uplifted and what I love about it is nothing more or less than the individuals you interview. Thanks to them for being who they are, and to you for seeing them.
SBSK was not the only thing but it was part of my inspiration to apply to the job I have now. I am now working full time with disabled autistic individuals and loving it, and remembering SBSK as I bond with my clients.
