    I noticed walmart's edibles section has yellow walls while the rest of the store has blue walls years ago. The yellow is to make you hungry while the blue makes you want to stay longer.

      If that's true then they need to change the blue color scheme. I actually feel like leaving as soon as possible because their colors are so bland and only add to the depressing atmosphere of their stores. Haven't been in a Walmart in 3 years.

    One important tool I use to not ever be fooled by advertising is to consider each purchase a question of necessity, rate it accordingly, and buy the safest brand at the lowest price, even if I need to wait before buying it- no matter what it is. I have always been ahead of this game and I think everyone can be.

    I don't remember how I found your channel, but I can bet you that UA-cam "nudged" me in your direction. There's no concrete "moral" of marketing, it all comes down to whether you are happy with your purchase. Did advertising make me buy Cheerios? Probably. Am I satisfied with my purchase? Yes.

    • @PolyMatter

      Good question. In general, most companies have to make money in order to grow, in order to make more money. But, nowadays a lot of companies are focusing on growth first, not making money. So they ask investors for a lot of money, then just focus on building a product and getting as many users as possible. This is what Snapchat, Instagram, and others have done. Eventually they have to start selling something or making money, but that's often many years away, so in the meantime you might as well use the service on the investor's dime. Does that answer your question?

    For nudging you work 100% of the time requires that either we have no free will and are just broken machines or that nudging isn’t just advertising but is actually the art of making a truly perfect product, so perfect and so perfectly advertised that every single brain running every single bit of reasoning would rightly know that it is a perfect product and that you should purchase it every time. Once we get a product like that I’d be buying it too, not because I can’t control myself but for the same reasons I, a being with free will, do not constantly stick my hand in fires just to prove I can make myself do it.

    Brick and mortar retail will be dead in 50 years. I’m in the marketing field and I’ll tell you that for a fact it’s all about data aggregation and marketing making assumptions based on huge cross channel meta data pools.
    A random example is a GM dealership sending an email to everyone that keeps their home temp at 72 on a Wednesday to guys named Ed who are ex smokers and are struggling with hair loss.
    That’s an extreme example, but in the future when we’ve looked at so much data from so many people and found trends, data agg companies sell that information to marketers rather than blanket advertising for something like pads on tv where by default their target market is cut in half assuming half the viewers are men.
    This new type of marketing were studying will be able to know your wants more than you do and put the perfect thing in front of you at the perfect time at the perfect place in ways that are simply proven to be irresistible.
    Don’t take my word for it. Go study big data marketing.

      I think "perfect time at the perfect place" only captures part of the data based advertising trend.
      Spying on people to achieve precision is one pole, but over at the other end there are advertisers who use the same internet tech to simply blast whole BROAD demographics with overwhelming advertising. Certain mobile games *flooding* gaming tags on UA-cam spring to mind.
      I don't know how prevalent highly targeted ads are compared to these web blitz strategies, but for certain product categories it's far more about web-enabled volume than web-enabled precision.

      It doesn't manipulate a person into doing something they don't want to do as much as "convince" them that it would be a good idea to do so. That form of manipulation is such a moral grey area because the consumer would never really lose the power of choice.

    • @guerrasetratados
      @guerrasetratados 6 років тому +6

      A ilusion of choice by convincing is not a choice at all, there's that discussion in Kant's philosophy. In fact, Brave New World is a dystopian novel that is all about that, they choose to be manipulated, but that doesn't change the nature of the coersion.

    I hardly ever buy something that I haven't either previously put on a shopping list or thought about for a while. When I see things in stores I find interesting but didn't originally plan to buy I will typically not buy them on the spot but go home and think about it, do some research and then go back for them. I'm not strapped for cash, I just don't like limitless consumerism and waste.

    In the UK and Australia (other places too) the government decides how to package, display and advertise cigarettes, that completely stops nudging, maybe this will go to other things like sugars at some point.
    And a company can't manipulate you in the way you describe, it could if we were all identical - but we're not. Almost all of our experiences are from outside of any single store or website,

    This was a really good video. My opinion is that company should be allowed to use as much subliminal advertising like this as they want to. However I do believe they should put a disclaimer at the front door of their store clearly stating it. If the consumer gets fooled, it is completely by their own accord, because they chose to shop there even after being warned.
    I feel that the free market is really good about working things like this out; and if enough people don't want to shop at places that use these tactics- the business itself, won't survive.
    Much like I feel that anyone should be allowed to refuse business to any customer, it is quite immediately digging into their profits by doing so. Both the consumer and the business should have educated option with who they do business with.

  • @Shazzkid
    @Shazzkid 7 років тому +9

    For the store a good nudge is simply one that works.
    For a customer a good nudge is one that made them make a good choice, one they usually couldn't manage themselves, like buying healthy food, or avoiding bad ones.
    Both are considered good nudges, and yet are both contradictory...why? Because its not as simple as good or bad, because good and bad doesn't exist, it is subjective, so nothing is inherently good or bad, it is what it is based on the effects it has on the person deciding.

    • @aaravmehta6471
      @aaravmehta6471 2 роки тому

      maybe it is not a contradiction, as it doesnt have to be binary, and can be a spectrum. what if it is good and bad at the same time and its just that one thing is more good than the other. And as our understanding changes one can become less bad, ie maybe it also doesnt have to be rigid with time. does it make sense?

  • @WhittleMiiSimpler

    More government is rarely the answer because government is not a neutral actor. Legislation rarely ensures fairness or safety. Usually it ensures that special interests have a favorable environment against less powerful competitors.

    • @avichalsinghal4786
      @avichalsinghal4786 3 роки тому

      More government is certainly not better for a lot of aspects, but that again doesn't mean much since more freedom and thus expanded capitalism certainly isn't better. If libertarianism and thus monopoly capitalism is the opposite of big government, which one is better?

    • @WhittleMiiSimpler
      @WhittleMiiSimpler 3 роки тому

      Why are monopolies bad when big businesses do it, but good when the federal government does it?
      Both suck!
      Limit both by taking a moderate approach:
      Regulatation to protect against predatory business AND decentralization to stop government rule by fiat. Take power back from the bureaucracy and return it to grassroots democracy.

    Marketing has no where near this amount of sway over people. As though humans lack autonomy, just a bag of skin and bones with eyes making purchases with no brain input whatsoever; whatever they tell me to buy is what I buy. This has been disproven over and over. Does marketing work? It sure does. Does it remove your ability to make your own choices? It does not.

    The assertion that once the brain is understood consumers lose free will is utter nonsense. No one can *force* someone to purchase something. Even if you hold them at gunpoint, they still might not even have the money.
    It doesn't matter how well we understand it. Unless you're jacking into someone's brains to control their movements, you can't force them to do anything.

      You're crazy dude. Most of his videos dont even end on the 10th minute. His content was good back then, but now it's insane. The quality of animation, the script writing, the execution - everything. This is one UA-camr that has made their videos longer for the better of their channel.
      I'm not sure you understand how much work a single minute of these videos take. He has to write the script, animate icons, make scenes, then actually start animating it. Each minute takes AT LEAST 5 hours for him. And the fact that you're bashing him for "stretching" them out is crazy.
      He would make much more money uploading 3x as much then having a 10 mintue video.
      I think this is more of a "he's not unknown anymore, so I'm not a fan" situation.

    This video is terrifying! Advertisers are little demons, but I've never considered what they would be able to do once we know all about the human brain. That amount of power is terrifying. ANYONE having that much power is scary at best and will spell the end of society as we know it at worst. Now I don't think that I want people to understand the brain. I fear the potential downside will b huge and the upside relatively small.

    Sounds brilliant. Well to be frank, the future consists of not just complex smartphones, but also connected devices soon too.
    So marketers must effectively dig deeper into their targets emotional and behavioural patterns in correlation to what they’re trying to nudge’

    Very interesting topic! Advertising through psychological manipulation to me is just as bad as downright lying or falsely advertising a product. In my opinion, whether the product is good or bad does not matter because you were wrongfully influenced into buying it. If someone lied and said carrots cured blindness and you bought them for that sole reason, then later found out that you were lied to, still does not make the carrots bad. They’re still good for you, but they’re not as advertised. To me that’s just as bad as the video’s toothpaste example, or subliminal advertising planting a tiny image or word into your head unknowingly so it’s on your mind and makes you wanna buy it. I’m gonna start wearing a condom on my head I guess, because I’m not down for getting non-consensually mind fucked.

    I think a good nudge is to show why you need it with smth like as you said, the mirror
    It's not manipulative if you actually need it and the store just make you "realize" you need it

    Products could still be well know and ubiquitous via word of mouth.
    Would our products and services be better without advertising budgets cutting into production costs?

    we literally got nudged into a Thumbs up hahaha. The video was greyscale with small pops of color. The last time we see more than 1 single color on the screen before the thumbs up is at 3:50. During the next few slides we are getting only dull greys, blacks, and a small amount of blue. The second to last slide is one with ONLY the greys, blacks and whites. Then we finally get that bright green GOOD sign, which is laid over the lighter color background. Musically, we get a strong V-I authentic cadence on that screen.
    Still gave the thumbs up tho :)

    I find that most advertising techniques bill down to impulseivity. The one who shops with a loose idea of what they will buy seem to be more likely to fall into these traps. While the shopper with strictly follow their lists are less likely to do the same.

    Nudging is like hypnosis. It doesn’t do squat if you’re trying to get someone to do something is truly against their will. Nudging merely helps consumers along a path that they are likely to take anyway. It also can’t force you to care about something that you couldn’t care less about.
    If advertising were that effective and that manipulative we wouldn’t invest so much in making truly great products - we would just sell people the contents of their trash can.
    This video, while interesting, is more inflammatory than anything else.

    After 11 years of going to gyms, I realized they wanted my money but not my presence. So I quit going and thought of ways do do each exercise I needed to do, without going to a gym (not just workouts, but steam, swim and Jacuzzi). I won't pay for gyms ever again. It's a scam!

    This is actually an extremely interesting video. Not for the main content (which is absolutely fantastic), but for the sponsorship of this video. The most likely scenario is that Compass News reached out to you, or you to them, because your content is educational or otherwise informative. This is probably based on the assumption that your audience is actively looking or is interested by new information, but is this case considered nudging? In the video, you gave an example during the toothpaste scenario where a customer may see their teeth in a mirror on the back of shelves, and buy a brand based on or because of that. When comparing this video to that analogy, is it wrong to compare the main content to the toothpaste shelf mirror, and the sponsor to the product? Like a mirror, the fact that this video emphasizes the reason nudging exists causes some people to reflect on these issues. These reflections may not be specific, but they now exist. Now we come to the sponsor which offers a way to find pieces of news (information) and summarize them, much like your channel but for issues that are presumably important to you. Does nudging only work on people who already want a product or is this one of few socially acceptable ways to nudge? Is nudging something that can be compartmentalized?

    The gyms part made me lol. This is why I can't subscribe to a gym membership. I barely used my red-light therapy membership package , so I know I'd get ripped off at the gym instead of just doing planks, squats and free weights at home.
