  • Thomas Sowell is an American economist and social theorist. Sowell has served on the faculties of several universities, including Cornell University and the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also worked at think tanks such as the Urban Institute. Since 1980, he has worked at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he served as the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy. Sowell writes from a libertarian-conservative perspective. Sowell has written more than thirty books, and his work has been widely anthologized. He is a National Humanities Medal recipient for innovative scholarship which incorporated history, economics and political science.
I've been going down the Thomas Sowell rabbit hole recently. He's so knowledgeable, consistent and charismatic that I slowly feel myself turning back towards a libertarian worldview. Brilliant, dedicated minds like Sowell are a dying breed and that is going to be a sad reality for our world in the years to come.
The matter of fact way that he discusses issues will be seen as incendiary by those not familiar with his work. He tackles issues that are, and have been, hot button topics in our country/world for the past years, decades, even centuries. The depth of his knowledge and nearly inhuman dedication to research place his views in very hallowed territory in the intellectual world. His ideas often sit squarely in the intersection of ethics, psychology, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. If you’ve never heard of Sowell, take a few minutes to check him out. He will almost assuredly challenge views that you hold to be self evident. One of the things that Sowell speaks about often is building “human capital”. Take ten minutes to build your human capital by listening to Sowell describe what human capital is and why it is important.

“Did I ever tell you about the time I tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers?” is a heck of a beginning to a conversation.
