I like that you never give up on the promise of X99 :) I would like to see more explorations of systems that accept legacy industrial CPUs / parts - especially if small form factor servers
X99 V1 V2 and V3 has never lost it's promise the processors has and will always be the best value you could get for your money the only issue is that the Motherboards are expensive as fudge unless your willing to cough up the money or buy a cheaper Chinese knock off with all the risks that comes with it this is tinkerers toy and not meant for general users.
Time to move on then and get a Lenovo P520c motherboard with LGA 2066. Start with a Xeon W-2135 (basically an i7 8700). I paid less than $50 for the board and $25 for the processor. BIOS updates claim Sapphire Rapids support.
@@milescarter7803 those OEM 2066 and X99 boards are just as bad or even worse than a chinese knock off in some instances and would often have bad VRM temps so unless the prices of good MOBO's like ones from ASUS, GIGABYTE, MSI, or ASROCK for 2066 is good it's not gonna be any better than X99.
Built my first server with the 22 Core Xeon and a Machinist X99 Mainboard some time ago - still rocks without even a single issue. Well, finding the option to Autostart after AC Power Loss in BIOS took a while, besides that just perfect.
I'm surprised at the lack of material quality in that thing. IF it harkens back to the good old days in the early 2000's it should at least take some queues from Lian Li or somebody that was actually putting thought in to materials and their thickness back then.
Oh that is a sexy case! ...Ok, that wiggle wobble seems a bit meh for the price. The wood accent is niiice but without a premium feel, it's no longer tempting.
if you are in the UK and are looking for used workstation/server hardware for things like chips and memory especially bargain hardware is an amazing place. That's where I got my 22 core xeon and 128GB DDR4 ECC
Not sure if he still does but i know Lawrence Systems used to edit all his videos with Kdenlive. I have it here on my computer running Manjaro (an HP Z840 dual CPU workstation) and it works great!

Immutable distros might be the best choice for creators because of stability.
That motherboard looks a lot like the Machinist-branded unit that I picked up to replace the increasingly unreliable system board in my Z440 -- basically swapped the case, cooler, and power supply (since those were all HP proprietary) and haven't looked back since. Only real issue with mine was that for some bizarre reason the internal USB2 header seems to conflict with the M.2 slot intended for wifi. Hardly the end of the world -- this is not a system hurting for ports, especially with a 3.0 hub or two, and the M.2 card supports bluetooth besides -- but something that I was taken aback by due to no documentation of this.

My current case is a Spartex Osmi 3.1 (ITX) that cost $199 and while it was a pain to build in the quality far surpasses what you've experienced with the Nebula. This thing is solid as a brick and all the vents are on the back, top, and bottom, keeping them out of view.
That motherboard looks brilliant. it looks even better than any X99 board that was released from the major vendors when X99 was new, i know, i had a X99 platform back when it first came out :) might have to get one of those boards for my Xeon 1650V4
I'm using a case from the Alienware Area-51 R2, and its build quality is faultless. If I had one complaint, it would be that it's too heavy. They just don't make cases like those anymore. BTW, the Xeon E5-2689 v4 is great, if you can find one at a good price. It's basically an undervolted and overclocked i7-6950X.
I'm completely addicted to xeon builds and this video scratched an itch that needed to be scratched. I'm always looking some reason to build a xeon build for someone.
HELLO and HELP ME PLEASE: I just got a motherboard from AliExpress, X99-S3 / SZMZ with 128gb Ram 2133mhz and a graphics card ELSA RX 580 8gddr5... MY problem is = I don't get any video at ALL, to see the BIO or install my OS and drivers. You always show how all your x99 start at once with video output on your monitor. The digital number show on the motherboard is 55 and the light on the RX580 is flashing blue as okay. I do not use any NVME M.2, like you normally shows in all your videos, but a 3TB 3.5 HD... @craftcomputing I love your x99 reviews and have been following them for years. I would love if you would do a review of the Jingsha X99E Max motherboard. It is an x99 quad channel motherboard but it takes ddr3 ECC up to 256gb! Would love to know what the comparison is between quad channel DDR4 and quad channel DDR3 is on x99. The x99e only supports several cpus but it does support the e5-2696 v3
Single socket X99 workstation --> 2696v3 it's basically a much higher clocking version of the 2699. With just a slight bus oc it'll boost two cores to 4GHz and clocks the other cores down in much finer steps. Not to mention there's always the v3 Xeon all-core boost hack - 18 cores at 3.8GHz is serious compute power for an old X99 system.
@@gyulamasa6512 That's an 8-core chip vs. the 2696's 18. You really think those extra 500MHz on two of the cores will compensate for that? If you want high single threaded performance, old Xeons on X99 are a waste of time and money. Every cheapo I3 will blow a Haswell Xeon out of the water in that discipline. If you go Haswell or Broadwell on X99 then that's because you need those 40 PCIE lanes and can make use of high core counts ... otherwise a low budget gaming platform would be a smarter investment.
@@Nalianna never been a fan of the V4's. You get two or three percent higher IPC and two additional cores for roughly the same TDP, which is nice o.c., but you loose the V3's overclockablility, which in my opinion is what saves old 612/X99 workstation and server hardware from the trip to the landfill. 2690v3s are a good compromise (12C 3.5GHz) if you're worried about powerdraw or VRM capability, otherwise I'd just go all out with a 2699 or 2696v3 considering how cheap they are at this point

As someone who does media and gaming solely on Linux; who's recently ditched an AMD RX6600 for an old NVidia GTX1070 with the proprietary driver just to save myself the headache of dealing with the media disaster of the Radeon under Linux for one more minute. Gaming-wise, the Radeon shined, but for literally everything else GPU related, forGET getting accelerated video encoding and decoding working on the dedicated subsystem which meant terrible performance live streaming my gaming. Oh, and trying to get the GPU encode acceleration working in discord was an exercise in pure frustration and fruitless battling. Tl;dr? AMD games well under Linux, but it turds for any kind of video you might want to use it for.
I get itchy when I haven't been in the shell in a while. I will open a terminal and type "ls -al" just to see the text on the screen. Sometimes I just start btop and leave it open like a digital fireplace.
Although I do not hate windows (beside the bloatware and telemetry) I really want to give Linux for gaming a chance. But the truth is that it is not hassle free. Especially when it comes to Ubisoft games (not bought on steam). You never know when an updates breaks everything. Again! After trying Ubuntu, pop_os and drauger, Nobara almost seemed to be the perfect choice. Untill Ubisoft broke again. Sometimes i hate Ubisoft... So now i decided tot wait for a linux distro with kernel 6.6 (i thought). They promised great things. Bit off topic, since this video is about building a pc and not gaming on linux. But i wanted to type this down anyway. Thats the nice thing of internet I guess. I think the case is bulky. I like the brown stripe (wood?) And how you can open it. Bit flexible in the hips though...
Regarding the itch - You may have fleas. Fortunately, a large-sized dog flea collar may fit you. Regarding the case.... sheesh, did they not think to address the rigidity issues before selling these a la carte? I like S76 for the most part, but this thing misses the mark.

I literally just bought the same cpu but the v3 model! Only because it technically has a slightly higher clock speed but with 12 cores 24 threads. They are amazing chips. I was considering getting a 2689v4 or a 2679v4 but they are still pretty pricey. I have a 1680v3 coming in the mail any day now that i can overclock to my hearts content!
I had both v3 and v4 xeons and much prefer the latter for any kind of server application. Better ipc and efficiency takes the kake. But for gaming the famous turbo boost hack makes the v3 ones pretty compelling, specially the higher boost ones reaching 3.6ghz or so, like the e5 2640 v3 at 3.4ghz is really good for the price being similar in ipc to zen1 chips
… I cant help but worry about cryptominer rooted firmware in the UEFI or the something similar as far as malware or security risks involved in such a cheap board. Very concerning. I would like to have 5 people buy them and inspect them in controlled environments to see if there was any funny business that occurred, and reverse-compile the firmware from the bios chip and chiplet caches to see what might be present.

Unfortunate about the build issues, but big marks for unique & minimalist design if that is your thing. I am really enjoying these builds with Xeon power and modern aesthetics & features. I kinda wish I had an 2687w part... but they are almost always a sweet spot for performance and an expensive spot for price.
great video, but spoiler alert: 1. while the vrm on this board isn't the most pathetic out there, i'm not sure if it'll be able to handle a 160w cpu 2. no, you most likely won't be able to switch to linux for video editing. a lot of people tried, and only only ones stayed, were the people willing to tolerate kdenlive and other pain points
2: Davinci Resolve and Lightworks work just fine on Linux using NVIDIA cards. Providing you're using the correct, supported distro's for the software. Resolve on Fedora or SUSE is particularly good. Most people's issues are PEBKAC.
The case look great but it is indeed a bit pricey for what it offers… That being said, looking forward to your adventures switching to System 76 for work. I am especially curious about your AMD GPU with DaVinci Resolve (things might have improved since, but the compatibility between Resolve and AMD GPUs was… lackluster, shall we say. I personally had to switch to Nvidia to be able to use Resolve on Linux)
Yes, I get a little antsy when it's been a while. One way I get past it is to just open up a system and swap in a new CPU cooler, GPU, or something. It's of course less of a cure than a complete new build, but it staves off the crisis. I'm entering this comment from a 6850K system (originally with two 980 ti GPUs in SLI and fully water cooled) that I built shortly after X99 hit the market. I cool the CPU with a Corsair H105, and the system is completed by a 1080 ti, 32GB of DDR4 at 3000 / 17, and two Samsung 500GB SSDs (850 EVO and 950 Pro) from the original build. I use it mostly for MS Office and browsing, but it can still game if I need it to. Long live X99!
The annoying thing about these boards is that the VRM cooling fans tend to crap out after 6 months. Besides that, my Huananzhi X99-TF has been running solid for the past 3 years. I use to have an E5-2678v3 as the processor, but I down-scaled to the E5-2623v3. I didn't need 12 cores for what I was doing; running a file server with a few dockers in UnRAID.
How does that motherboard handle IOMMU? Was thinking this might be a very cheap platform for a multigamer build using VFIO and GPU passthrough and usb passthrough would be kind of awesome on a budget.
I second that CPU Cooler I have a dual x399 with 2 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 and two of those coolers with 4 fans keeps not only the cpus but also the internals cool.
I just bought that same cpu and 64gb of ECC. I put it on an ASUS X99-M WS mobo. It runs cool and quiet at 3.0+ ghz all cores all day if needed. Your GPU is a better choice, but I am running a Titan Xp in mine. Now I just need to figure out what to do with it all.
I had an older RX580 then about 6 months ago i got an ASRock 6700 XT ChallengerD 12GB. I LOVE IT! It should be a super nice workstation with that CPU and GPU.
That movement of the PSU is pretty concerning. I've seen quite a few examples of PSUs getting ripped out in shipping. System76 needs to add more support for the PSU, expansion cards, and motherboard.
I dunno man, based on what you said you wanted to do you made all the bad choices. Get that AMD GPU out, throw your NVIDIA card in and go with Fedora KDE ( or the Fedora based Nobara for easy Resolve install ). The next video is you going to be swearing a lot at your poor starting choices.... at least that'll be fun.

Yes, I use a teleprompter in all of my videos. I'm not sure what kind of delivery you were looking for in a case review, but all of my scripts are pre-written to make sure all of the information is relayed on camera. If that style isn't for you, that's fine.

I noticed a slight type on the screen where you list the CPU. You have it listed as E6 instead of E5 ...no biggie as you even said E5 but just thought i would point it out incase its an easy correction.

Give Blender as a video editor a sincere look. 100% of the tedium associated with that disappears with saving a template and it suck less to use than people give it credit for.
There are quite a few sellers on Ali. The one I linked was $80 as of filming, but prices fluctuate quite a bit. Search x99-e8i and you're bound to find one.
If they were having runs of hundreds of thousands or millions of units then that price would come down to something more realisticly competitive for the quality. As is i am glad they decided to offer it for those that may want to use it at whatever price its at.
As someone who has recently done the can I totally move to Linux thing the answer was no but a mini pc with windows on it takes care of that. Prefer that to dual booting or a windows vm. Milage will vary depending on what you do of course but I've been fine with pop os so far.

X99 is a underrated platform for diy home servers. I run a 2x 2699 v3 with 96gb ram (I am waiting to get another 32gb kit) love me a good core count

I hear Radeon Graphics with Resolve is a pita on Linux. Hopefully I've been given bad information.
… I cant help but worry about cryptominer rooted firmware in the UEFI or the something similar as far as malware or security risks involved in such a cheap board. Very concerning. I would like to have 5 people buy them and inspect them in controlled environments to see if there was any funny business that occurred, and reverse-compile the firmware from the bios chip and chiplet caches to see what might be present.

Unfortunate about the build issues, but big marks for unique & minimalist design if that is your thing. I am really enjoying these builds with Xeon power and modern aesthetics & features. I kinda wish I had an 2687w part... but they are almost always a sweet spot for performance and an expensive spot for price.

great video, but spoiler alert:
1. while the vrm on this board isn't the most pathetic out there, i'm not sure if it'll be able to handle a 160w cpu
2. no, you most likely won't be able to switch to linux for video editing. a lot of people tried, and only only ones stayed, were the people willing to tolerate kdenlive and other pain points
2: Davinci Resolve and Lightworks work just fine on Linux using NVIDIA cards. Providing you're using the correct, supported distro's for the software. Resolve on Fedora or SUSE is particularly good. Most people's issues are PEBKAC.

That being said, looking forward to your adventures switching to System 76 for work. I am especially curious about your AMD GPU with DaVinci Resolve (things might have improved since, but the compatibility between Resolve and AMD GPUs was… lackluster, shall we say. I personally had to switch to Nvidia to be able to use Resolve on Linux)
Yes, I get a little antsy when it's been a while. One way I get past it is to just open up a system and swap in a new CPU cooler, GPU, or something. It's of course less of a cure than a complete new build, but it staves off the crisis.
I'm entering this comment from a 6850K system (originally with two 980 ti GPUs in SLI and fully water cooled) that I built shortly after X99 hit the market. I cool the CPU with a Corsair H105, and the system is completed by a 1080 ti, 32GB of DDR4 at 3000 / 17, and two Samsung 500GB SSDs (850 EVO and 950 Pro) from the original build. I use it mostly for MS Office and browsing, but it can still game if I need it to. Long live X99!
The annoying thing about these boards is that the VRM cooling fans tend to crap out after 6 months. Besides that, my Huananzhi X99-TF has been running solid for the past 3 years. I use to have an E5-2678v3 as the processor, but I down-scaled to the E5-2623v3. I didn't need 12 cores for what I was doing; running a file server with a few dockers in UnRAID.

How does that motherboard handle IOMMU? Was thinking this might be a very cheap platform for a multigamer build using VFIO and GPU passthrough and usb passthrough would be kind of awesome on a budget.
I second that CPU Cooler I have a dual x399 with 2 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v4 and two of those coolers with 4 fans keeps not only the cpus but also the internals cool.
I just bought that same cpu and 64gb of ECC. I put it on an ASUS X99-M WS mobo. It runs cool and quiet at 3.0+ ghz all cores all day if needed. Your GPU is a better choice, but I am running a Titan Xp in mine. Now I just need to figure out what to do with it all.

I had an older RX580 then about 6 months ago i got an ASRock 6700 XT ChallengerD 12GB. I LOVE IT! It should be a super nice workstation with that CPU and GPU.
That movement of the PSU is pretty concerning. I've seen quite a few examples of PSUs getting ripped out in shipping. System76 needs to add more support for the PSU, expansion cards, and motherboard.
Great video Jeff, I love system 76 and POP OS is a pretty good OS, not my favorite Linux distro but it is a good one, and a very nice case!
I dunno man, based on what you said you wanted to do you made all the bad choices. Get that AMD GPU out, throw your NVIDIA card in and go with Fedora KDE ( or the Fedora based Nobara for easy Resolve install ). The next video is you going to be swearing a lot at your poor starting choices.... at least that'll be fun.

Yes, I use a teleprompter in all of my videos. I'm not sure what kind of delivery you were looking for in a case review, but all of my scripts are pre-written to make sure all of the information is relayed on camera.
If that style isn't for you, that's fine.

I noticed a slight type on the screen where you list the CPU. You have it listed as E6 instead of E5 ...no biggie as you even said E5 but just thought i would point it out incase its an easy correction.
Doesn’t the pcie v3 impact performance? Is there a motherboard with v4 or 5 for a Xeon cpu that doesn’t break the bank. Don’t like that case….

Pop_OS is NOT actually Debian based (at least not directly). It is Ubuntu Based...which is based on Debian

There are quite a few sellers on Ali. The one I linked was $80 as of filming, but prices fluctuate quite a bit. Search x99-e8i and you're bound to find one.
If they were having runs of hundreds of thousands or millions of units then that price would come down to something more realisticly competitive for the quality. As is i am glad they decided to offer it for those that may want to use it at whatever price its at.

As someone who has recently done the can I totally move to Linux thing the answer was no but a mini pc with windows on it takes care of that. Prefer that to dual booting or a windows vm. Milage will vary depending on what you do of course but I've been fine with pop os so far.
