I absolutely love Doug Stanhope! He is a comedy genius. His material is so funny and slightly cerebral at the same time. Sometimes abrasive. Always to the point. You should watch this whole special. Absolutely hysterical from start to finish. The bits about “occupy wall street” and “his mother’s suicide” are side splittingly funny. Any of his routines are definitely worth the watch.

Doug Stanhope has a special place in my heart. I sobered up after a decade of half gallon a day alcoholism, heroin and MDMA addiction, and a couple suicide attempts. I joined the Navy and while sitting in the barracks a couple weeks after graduation, I get a call from my parents. They said somebody they were with wanted to talk to me and wish me a happy belated birthday (it was the day before) and to congratulate me on sobriety and joining the Navy. Who was it? DOUG FUCKING STANHOPE. They hung out with him all night after his show back in my hometown.
Stanhope’s bits on alcoholism, adhd, mental illness, and general pessimistic views on society really resonated with me at a time when I felt so alone and misunderstood. Saw him last year (my first comedy show sober) and it felt so nice to finally meet the fucked up, depressing, morbid old man that helped turn my life around ☺️

I played in the church band when I was 16 and the priest's twentysomething nephew also played in that band and he gave me an MP3 CD full of Doug's material (amongst many of his contemporaries). That CD has been far more influential and beneficial to my life than church ever was.

I was the kid who's dad was scarred BADLY from visits to his southern Baptist church as a kid. He got cracked in the head accidentally by a door before a service, & they asked if anyone need healing & "Millie", my grandma screamed MY SON! MY SON!! LOL So they put my poor dad on some alter or some shhhh & tried to HEEEAL HIM! They actually just kept gouging the wound more when they "laid hands on him" so they poked the wound, and all he saw was his blood on their fingers, while speaking in tongues!!! Other than that, a good time! Hahaa
Perhaps it needless to say, but we had NO religion in the house. LOL
I felt left out when the kids had CCD growing up, they absolutely hated it, but I was like I MUST GO, I think I was FOMO before FOMO was cool!!😂
I did go to several friend's churches for Sunday school, I think my dad just enjoyed the peace & quiet on a Sunday, and I was all about some arts n crafts hahaa
it's STILL amazing how moving and yet at times, how terrifying religion can be! The forest has been my new religion, I have never been as moved and in peace as I am when I go to the middle of the forest... ❤ sorry for carrying on, I just do that lol

Omg, I used to do stand up and Doug was the headliner for an open mike contest I was in ... he tore each performer a new ass ...except me!! Then some schmuck in the crowd yells "what about the CHICK?!?" I think I peed a little in terror, like NOOOOO! DON'T MENTION THE CHICK!!! LMAO
He joked he was going to leave me out of the goon fest that night, but said I was cool, but how is it a ginger babe delivered punchlines so much like CHRIS ROCK! I about puked, I had no idea I did that, I was always like 4 vodka rocks in just to get on stage lmao!! I got his CD and went up to him end of night said "hey dude, will you sign my shit... to CHRIS ROCK!" He got me in a headlock/noogie kinda thang hahaha really nice guy, very supportive!
I lent the CD (Which had a D pump on the cover, incidentally lmao) and never got it back😢 Don't lend people shit, kids, I am witness that people suck and won't return anything lol
That's a good story! On the topic of lending things, I used to read this book online that was posted chapter by chapter, called John dies at the end, by David Wong.
The author eventually published the book, and since I was young and an arrogant asshole, I sent him an email asking if he had any for a discount. He emails back, saying I have stacks of them at my house, give me your address and I'll send you a copy, you cheap, cheap fuck. I emailed back with address and said "I'm calling your bluff, Mr Wong."
Sure enough he sends me a copy, autographed, and under the autograph, a picture of a dick.
Anyway I lent it to some coworker and of course that was the end of that. We know now!

Say what you will about him, Doug is a barnburner of a comic. Check out the one about his mother and the afterlife (the live one, not the animated crap fanvid), or the one about nationalism, or the "Careful What You Wish For" one. You'll be glad you did.
Doug is awesome, it can be crass at times but he's hilarious. A great line I remember him saying in one of his specials was something like "Coming to my show is like me leading you into war.... we're not all going to still be here when it's over"

Wonderful reaction. This gentleman just "gets it" on so many subjects. I love his reaction to my favorite song, Close to the Edge by Yes, also. This man is open to watching and listening to anything with a truly open mind, and that is just inspiring.
Discovered Stanhope on Sirius about 20 years ago. It was the butter knife in the butthole bit. A few years later a friend who I introduced to his comedy called and said he thinks his mom lives next door to Doug Stanhope. Sure enough. Buddy's mom was Doug's neighbor in Bisbee and ended up with wardrobe credit on this show.

I’ve watched a few of your fellow UA-camrs react to this joke in disbelief and loose the thread of the joke. In its content and conception it’s genius on a obviously horrific subject. You stand alone so far . Perfect.
If you get a chance, check out an episode of Louis CK's show Doug starred in (S02E09 "Eddie"). He is fantastic as a semi-autobiographical role as a suicidal road comic. It'll be a bit tricky to track down since the show lives on Louis' website, having been scrubbed from streaming sites. Well worth the effort.

Doug Stanhope is up there with Carlin and Chappelle as GOATS of the comedy. This is one of his best.
1. Certain UA-cam reactors have a troubling reaction to anything the least bit homoerotic.
2. This is a great example of something that Louis CK also does, and that’s talk about gay things that use themselves as the subject, even though they aren’t gay.
I think it’s incredibly important for normalizing the existence of homosexuality in society… not promoting it per se, but taking the edge off so ppl don’t flip out if they see 2 dudes smiling at each other.
