    First Reformed was absolutely stunning. Such a shame it will most likely be overlooked during the award season.

    " The first script taxi drevier was loneliness , you find a metaphor, a taxi cap , take a plot and run through a metaphor " a masterclass in screenwriting in those few words

      even though he makes it sound simple,I find this process extremely difficult. Because for one to find a theme from your life that can resonate in a film is tough and to turn it into a metaphor which is unique is even tougher, which is why Paul's work is so good

      @@saiashwin26 i know hes an amazing writer i first saw taxi driver in 2002 when i was 16. My dad introduced me to the film and i was blown away. Also the screenplay for Raging Bull was amazing and last temptation. First Reformed was a incredible story and character study. He comes out of nowhere after not doing anything great for a long time. Quite stunning kind of like malick dissapearing for years and coming back with The Thin Red Line

    Good Schrader directed films always go under the radar...Michima, Light sleeper, Affliction, Auto focus (personal favorite)...Definitely an underappreciated writer and director.

      Especially Mishima, such a powerful and strikingly original story. While Taxi Driver is likely his greatest achievement (The Crime and Punishment of cinema), Mishima to me is right up there as one of the true great cinematic achievements.

      He's one of my favorite directors. First saw Mishima and I was stunned. Then I went and saw it again earlier this year in the restoration and I am now convinced it's a masterpiece.

    A masterpiece and the finest film of the year, no doubt. One of “those” films that I’ll never forget the time or the place when I first saw it. One of the best films released in my lifetime.

    First Reformed was just fantastic, even though I felt it borrows a bit much from Bergman's Winter Light (especially the relationship with the brunette) and his own Taxi Driver. Nonetheless, a powerful film that unfortunately won't be seen by many.

      He has stated that he borrowed a lot /influenced heavily from Diary of a Country Priest, Winter Light, and specifically the ending of Ordet with this film.

      @Lepidopterous. 5 років тому

      I noticed exactly this on first viewing and it took a lot out of the film for me. If you're going to borrow heavily from Winter Light and (his own) Taxi Driver, then at least do it better. But First Reformed doesn't perform as well as either of those.

      It has its own style, purpose and journey.
      My problem with many films that are derivative is they take the overall feel/tone of the movie.
      Like Joker takes Taxi Driver and makes it more stereotypical and silly.

    This might be favourite of Paul Schrader. I adore much of his work as a screenwriter and as a director. This might be the perfect coalescence of both roles. A tremendous work and the finest performance of Ethan Hawkes career. A fine return to form from cinemas more interesting voices.

    Is there anyway I can get in contact with the Director. I want to ask him what gave him the idea to portray this sort of character in his movie. Has he ever came across a man like William in real life or better you ask him and tell him a big fan is highly interested in watching all his movies after watching the movie card counter
