I feel like crying right now for how a good teacher you are, and how much time you spend to teach all of us here. Thank you for everything. Really appreciate it. :)
Alphonso, I have learned so much from you during this half hour video. I am self taught without any formal training. My flowers now look so realistic instead of cartoonish! Thank you for taking the time to share with us your expertise.
This just increased my knowledge/skill about 3 billion percent since I started drawing in April. I just drew the best flower I've ever drawn thanks to this tutorial. Thank you!
My friend, you are special. Teachers are one of God's many gifts to us. Your ability to explain those concepts so clearly will enhance many peoples lives. Good teachers go with us for a lifetime and help us form who we are. Art especially is something we all should do a little of if not a lot of. I made my living as a musician all my life but love all forms of art. In my retirement I am learning to sketch and it is so much fun. You have helped me greatly in my quest. Thank you!! God bless you my friend!!
Your tutorials are absolutely amazing. You're such a gifted teacher. I've learned more from you than any other art teacher I've ever had. I love how you explain everything, from form to line and everything else, in a way that makes complete sense. You aren't just here to show off your drawing skills, you are here to teach. Your Pen and Ink Drawing Workbook is also an immense help -- I'd recommend it to anyone who want to improve. It's so well thought out. It's helped me get much more comfortable with so many different techniques. Now I can follow along with your videos and draw what you draw and apply those techniques with much more confidence. Thank you!!
Graphic Design student here... you are getting me through my final assignment in Drawing II :) thank you so much! You are definitely knowledgable and absolutely right on! Everything you talk about is in our textbooks with the difference that YOU make a world of difference for us VISUAL learners! I am more of a monkey see monkey do person :D THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
You did an amazing job explaining why you would do each technique to get a certain affect. Thank you for sharing your experience for people who are willing to learn! I commend you for sharing your insight and sharing them!
...you are an incredible teacher... because it all looks so easy. I draw, sketch, paint, (water) I hope to retire in few months... and, I want to leave a whole shelf of books with sketches of what i saw. through the rest of my life... but I will dedicate a volume to you. thank you, thank you, thank you !
Thank you so much Alphonso, you are an amazing teacher! You explain everything so clearly. Your time and effort spent on this video is very much appreciated.
I have both your books and have been going through your videos (even ones that are 10 years old!) I find the teaching you provide in the videos really solidifies the learnings in the books. Very grateful for the accompanying videos. Thank you! 🇦🇺
You're the best teacher on UA-cam! I love how you explain and draw at the same time..breaking down the steps so simply and repeating the same phrases...using the little examples off the side for extra visualization. Awsome! Thank you so much!
I have taken so many art classes and I just found you today and I have learned more in 3 videos that actually makes since and I can utilize than I ever did in any of those classes. I wanted to go to Graphic design school and the teacher's criticism's led to me and another girl resigning because she said we were fine artists and didn't belong...I was so crushed.
It is like you are filling in all the blanks that ties it all together. I am very impressed with your teaching style, content, and progression. I am looking forward to viewing all that you have and getting your books.
What a GREAT tutorial!!! I have an issue drawing the leaves on flowers to resemble the generic shape, they are too perfect looking. You are a genius! Thank you SO much for sharing your skills!! It is appreciated!
I am absolutely and utterly stunning and gobsmacked by how you teach us how to draw, shade, and achieve the stunning results that you’ve just shown us. Alphonso, I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up 👍 too. Because I’ve never seen this type of tutorial before. Thank you so much. Stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Your voice is very relaxing, in my opinion, and you make a great teacher! I've been listening to your videos while working on my one point perspective city street drawing for art class, your shading videos have been very helpful and have given me a better understanding on how light works. Thank you!
I never leave comments for videos, but I just HAD to this time. For me to sit thru a video this long and not get bored and/or skip thru, it's gotta be something exceptional! You do a great job explaining things. Thank you so much for sharing with us! I'm finally going after that art degree I've always wanted and I begin my first drawing classes next month and just watching this made me get even more excited. Ahhh I can't wait! AWESOME. ☺
I love your videos and I've been trying to improve my art skills and I've looked all over UA-cam and your the only youtuber that could help!! thnx keep up the amazing work +ALPHONSO DUNN
Wow thanks you saved me from getting a detention at school for not doing my art homework :-) you're a really good teacher my drawings came out half decent, and I'm not the best artist.:-)
Thank you Alphonso. I am doing sketches with thread on fabric and thought learning more about sketches in pen and ink would help me inprove. Your video has been very helpful. Thank you again for taking the time to do this. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I like how you are actually breaking down the line-art, whereas some people seem to use it as a means to an end, so second-nature that they don't explain or describe what-how-why of the line-work. As you say in your vids, you are self taught, and although your lines are sometimes imperfect, your technique seems overall effective. I'm trying to learn crosshatching, and you've been helpful. You have great videos. Subbed.
Wow, I really like that tip about drawing the basic shape next to the subject matter! (for example, the cylinder can be applied to a flower). It's really practical, but helps to make it seem more realistic. Thanks! I didn't think about that.
The playlists are so versatile 💗. From anatomy to perspective and what not. Just subscribed. Definitely going to spend all my time on this after exams :)
Nice and Beautifully Different Vizlistion Flower's with Leaves.Realast Leat And Sheads, high Leats.lmpoerten of the perspective and Anatomy also important. Time'Drawing Details and flowers Leaves Filding, Deatails
Thank you so much! I only do black and white art with ink (stabilus or the pens from staedler) and no matter how long I practice, I never get the right shadows, or the right lines (thick and thin, etc.) But with other tools (aquarell, or pencil - I think that it's easier to bring drawings "to life") it's definitely not my style. You helped me so much with that tutorial. :) and you are so talented. Keep doing that. Sorry for my bad English. Lovely greetings from Hamburg - Germany :)
I thought you were an amazingly talented artist, but no, I was wrong! You are a magician! Thank you, you are an outstanding teacher, and I just love your work. Regards frm South Africa
OMG this is just the kind of tutorial I needed. You explain everything in detaiiiiil. I've been leaning towards pen illustration and shading through hatching and no other tutorial was teaching it this way!!! I love you and your work!!!! I'm so grateful to you sharing your expertise.
Hey Alphonso, really quick question (Its so nice of you that you read and answer so many comments despite being so popular!), can you explain when to vary pen widths? like, if i was doing a fine detail use a 0.05 and for the general outline use a 0.1? how do you decide when to use a different width of pen, when is it okay to use all 1 pen?
vary the width the match the light and shadow. I should be wide where its in shadow and thin when it in light.. What you suggest about the point sizes is correct
Happy New Year. And thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills. Much appreciated! If possible, it would be very useful too if you would show and explain how to draw the flowers in pencil before rendering with pen and ink.
If any death persone comes and finds your videos, just by looking at what you do it's enough. You also draw in a way that even without audio, the persone can have and idea and some tips on how to grow in there drawing abilities. You are a magnificent person and you have on of the greates ability to explain that teachers lack everywear! Thank you!
I've been getting a lot from your channel so I bought your book today. I have no doubt I'll get much value from it, but I would have bought it if it had blank pages just as a token of thanks for the help I'm getting.
Thank you so much for taking the time to really explain & show what your picturing in your mind as you draw. I too would be very interested in seeing how you start from pencil drawings. I kinda practiced backwards with this one. I watched your pen drawing, then began mine in pencil while I paused the video, then watched again as you started the shading. It took a bit, but so worth the time.
Hey everyone, I bought Alphonso Dunn's guide on pen and ink drawing and I'm very satisfied with the content. I was wondering if the workbook he published is worth buying additionally i.e. what is in it?
I love your videos! Keep doing what you do! Whenever I draw I'm too shy to show other people. I'm also a perfectionist, whenever I draw something that doesn't look good in the beginning, I cross it out (which I know is not a good thing, because sometimes I keep going and it usually ends up good).
hey Alfonso, been using some of your vids for my class, today a student asked "how do you know how to draw a flower if it's already drawn"...good point...maybe in future you can do a couple from scratch... cheers mate
I have always wanted to draw and watching this soothes something in me. I cannot afford the book right now but this video is amazing. What kind of paper do you suggest that has enough tooth.. to do flowers and then do pencil art with them coloring them in, shading .. like that?
crazy that your a better teacher than what I had in college . will you make any videos on color theory or maybe drawing comic style ? I'm about to buy your book!
learnt alot from you thank you.im wondering if you do any gouache paint work as i dont see any videos on this and i would love learn this too.great work
just saw this.. i love your detail tutorial...now it made so much sense to me in terms of shading/lines and such. is there a way for me to send my work to you and give me tips on things to improve?
is there a trick how i can draw spikey plants? like teasel and thistles? im struggling with the right amount of detail and how to get the spikes in the right flow.

I've always wanted to learn how to draw and so I'm so thankful to you. Do you have any suggestions on how one might find their drawing style?
Thank you for actually telling us HOW to draw and not just music background while you draw. Appreciate your help! You’re an amazing instructor 🙌🏻👏🏻
I feel like crying right now for how a good teacher you are, and how much time you spend to teach all of us here. Thank you for everything. Really appreciate it. :)

I'm so sorry you experienced that. Instructors sometimes lose sight of the impact they can have on their students' confidence

Great videos. I would say stippling is the way to go when shading flowers but it takes lot's and lot's of patience.
Drawing all of these would take me so long lol. He's just whippin' them out. Bing - done!
