I've never been muslim, but I think leaving islam for emotional reasons would be valid, such as the emotional benefit of listening to music, playing musical instruments, going to the beach without having to wear a black tent, and the emotional benefit of knowing my husband CANNOT beat me. (Actually, he could beat me but I could have him arrested and put in jail, but he was taught never hit women and I was taught never throw dishes and things at men.)

A little background about myself: I'm Muslim/Arab and was raised my whole life in Canada. To put it simply, I don't "feel" Muslim, and looking back I don't think I ever have. A lot of people claim they feel close to god when they pray or read Quran, but I've never felt anything like that. Prayer has always been a hollow ritual, never really having any special meaning for me. Quran is the same way, reading it has not had any impact on me whatsoever. I got more out of reading Harry Potter than I ever did from the Quran. I know I must seem really close minded and dismissive of the deen, but believe me my apathy is not for lack of trying to understand. My parents have enrolled me in Islamic school when I was younger and I did put forth the effort. I even spent a couple years in a private school that had a strong Islam-concentric curriculum. Dispite all this, I still don't feel any closer to god. As an adult I've made my own efforts to understand the deen, thinking maybe the school's teaching style might not have worked for me. Still didn't feel close to god. I honestly have no idea what else I can do, other than just accept the fact that Islam isn't for me. I've done everything I can think of to feel closer to god and in return I get nothing. Simply put the deen just isn't for me. I don't want to keep trying and failing my whole life, I feel like its gotten to the point where any further attempts will just make me miserable. In short I don't think being Muslim has enriched my life in anyway. In fact its the opposite, I feel like its hindering my happiness. I remember once when I was a child I asked my parents if I could go to a friends house and spend the afternoon there. At first they were OK with it, until they found out her parents drank wine. All of a sudden spending the afternoon with my friend was completely out of the question. There were dozens of moments like in my childhood, far too many to count. I feel like I missed out on some great memories because of it. And that's not even mentioning the number of friends I've been forced to let go simply because we happened to be the opposite gender, all because good Muslim girls don't have male friends. I don't want to be Muslim anymore, I want to take off my hijab and feel the wind through through my hair. I want to stop having to avoid certain foods just because they have meat non-hala meat in them. I want to be able to go out on my own and enjoy some independence for once. I feel so suffocated by my family's beliefs and I just want to end it all, stop being Muslim move out of my family's house and just enjoy life. The worst part of it all is that I don't think I can realistically do any of that. I feel like I've been forced into a corner and that I have no choice but to depend on my family, to the point where I simply can't do the things I want to. I'm not even sure if I can tell my family since I have no clue how they'll react to me abandoning the deen. I'm not even sure why I'm posting this, I guess I'm hoping someone here might be able to relate and maybe offer up some advice. Sorry for writing a novel, I just needed a place to vent. EDIT: wow this got easy more attention then I was expecting. Thank you all so much for your kind words, I may not have replied to any of you but rest assured I did read them all. It's clear now that I have quite a bit of soul searching ahead of me. I don't know where that soul searching with take me, but thank you all for the push in the right direction.

I've never been muslim, but I think leaving islam for emotional reasons would be valid, such as the emotional benefit of listening to music, playing musical instruments, going to the beach without having to wear a black tent, and the emotional benefit of knowing my husband CANNOT beat me. (Actually, he could beat me but I could have him arrested and put in jail, but he was taught never hit women and I was taught never throw dishes and things at men.)

Great video as always! I've been watching your videos for a while as my gf is Muslim and it got me curious about it. I'm trying to slowly make her less superstitious while introducing her to new ideas. She had never heard of the wife beating verse before I opened the subject.

A little background about myself: I'm Muslim/Arab and was raised my whole life in Canada.
To put it simply, I don't "feel" Muslim, and looking back I don't think I ever have. A lot of people claim they feel close to god when they pray or read Quran, but I've never felt anything like that. Prayer has always been a hollow ritual, never really having any special meaning for me. Quran is the same way, reading it has not had any impact on me whatsoever. I got more out of reading Harry Potter than I ever did from the Quran.
I know I must seem really close minded and dismissive of the deen, but believe me my apathy is not for lack of trying to understand. My parents have enrolled me in Islamic school when I was younger and I did put forth the effort. I even spent a couple years in a private school that had a strong Islam-concentric curriculum. Dispite all this, I still don't feel any closer to god. As an adult I've made my own efforts to understand the deen, thinking maybe the school's teaching style might not have worked for me. Still didn't feel close to god.
I honestly have no idea what else I can do, other than just accept the fact that Islam isn't for me. I've done everything I can think of to feel closer to god and in return I get nothing. Simply put the deen just isn't for me. I don't want to keep trying and failing my whole life, I feel like its gotten to the point where any further attempts will just make me miserable. In short I don't think being Muslim has enriched my life in anyway. In fact its the opposite, I feel like its hindering my happiness. I remember once when I was a child I asked my parents if I could go to a friends house and spend the afternoon there. At first they were OK with it, until they found out her parents drank wine. All of a sudden spending the afternoon with my friend was completely out of the question. There were dozens of moments like in my childhood, far too many to count. I feel like I missed out on some great memories because of it. And that's not even mentioning the number of friends I've been forced to let go simply because we happened to be the opposite gender, all because good Muslim girls don't have male friends.
I don't want to be Muslim anymore, I want to take off my hijab and feel the wind through through my hair. I want to stop having to avoid certain foods just because they have meat non-hala meat in them. I want to be able to go out on my own and enjoy some independence for once. I feel so suffocated by my family's beliefs and I just want to end it all, stop being Muslim move out of my family's house and just enjoy life.
The worst part of it all is that I don't think I can realistically do any of that. I feel like I've been forced into a corner and that I have no choice but to depend on my family, to the point where I simply can't do the things I want to. I'm not even sure if I can tell my family since I have no clue how they'll react to me abandoning the deen. I'm not even sure why I'm posting this, I guess I'm hoping someone here might be able to relate and maybe offer up some advice. Sorry for writing a novel, I just needed a place to vent.
EDIT: wow this got easy more attention then I was expecting. Thank you all so much for your kind words, I may not have replied to any of you but rest assured I did read them all. It's clear now that I have quite a bit of soul searching ahead of me. I don't know where that soul searching with take me, but thank you all for the push in the right direction.

Leave Islam, but also leave animal products off your plate And out of your lifestyle. No one should suffer for us to have a moment of taste pleasure. Halal is not free of suffering. It's barbaric to continue to hurt animals. They're innocent. A merciful God would never want this. You know I'm right.
