      As much as I love Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana, but Raven definitely broke barriers and she deserves as much credit as Miley. Don't get me wrong, Miley has made a lot of impact and carried Disney on her back for years, but Raven is the Blueprint and paved the way for black women like, Coco, China, Keke, Skai Jackson, Monique Coleman and the lists goes on! Also if it weren't for her, The Cheetah Girls wouldn't be successful!

    It's sadly ironic that Disney told Raven that she needed to lose weight but also did an episode where Raven's body was photoshopped to make her appear skinny for a fashion show and she walked the runway pretty much telling everyone to embrace their bodies.

    • @liizzset
      @liizzset 3 роки тому +199

      I heard she said it was hypocritical in one of her interviews. She had mentioned this same episode and then stated that she could not believe how hypocritical Disney told her to lose weight. Yet placed her in that or rather the episode after telling her this.

    It’s safe to say that most Disney girls had mental breakdowns, image issues, dating problems, issues with being seen as a person outside of their childhood characters, etc On top of these problems, Black Disney girls dealt with colorism and hair/makeup models styling them incorrectly. This is very sickening and harmful a child’s psyche.

Most of Disney child actors ended up dead , drug addicts , mental issues etc. Not to say nick didn't have the same because there were a few " Amanda Bynes" but overall nick did a better job with the child actors than Disney

I think she's better off because now she can have her sanity and grow up to be a respectful adults! Most of those kids that grew up in the industry and continue to be in the industry they have so many mental problems in don't know how to cope with it and they just get so fixated on drugs and try to escape! A lot of these places they have like 1-2, maybe 3, stylists for the entire cast. So I’m guessing that a lot of the hiring managers thought or felt like hiring a black stylist to do other folks hair just wouldn’t ‘work’ or some dumb shit.
      Also, it’s not that every black stylist will know how to style Natural black hair. For a long time I had a stylist who only knew how to braid my hair or perm it, and turns out she permed my hair and burned it all of I had to chop my hair off and start again.
      So black stylists don’t always mean knowledge because unfortunately a lot of them have to go to these white esthetician schools that don’t teach you anything about black hair.
      It’s a super complex issue unfortunately, but I’m glad some change is being made in a positive direction.

I’d never seen someone who looked like me represented as the “it” girl, the girl everyone wanted or wanted to be who was talented, smart, funny, and happy. I hope she gets major deals in the future. Raven was so honest about how cut throat the industry truly is, they don’t care about you being a kid if you don’t fit the brand they have no problem telling a kid to lose weight and hide this or that. That’s the very reason these kids develop drug addictions.

    The irony of raven being labeled as “too big” is that there was a whole episode of the show focused on how the industry body shamed and puts up a fake image on what women should look like.
    In the episode Raven’s dress gets featured on a magazine, but she doesn’t get to model it because she didn’t fit their image and she was replaced with a skinny white model instead. The episode ends with raven taking a stand and go on the catwalk to model her design despite what others say.

Shame on them.

    • @summertimejay3157
      @summertimejay3157 3 роки тому +92

      I don’t think it was a bad idea (well, obviously because it turned out to be a success).
      Personally, I appreciate that it was middle class family rather than a wealthy high class family. Statistically back in the 90s, the average black household was low class and this was also during or little after the crack cocaine epidemic.
      I believe having a middle class black family on tv had a more positive impact for black families, because it looked like an attainable goal a true representation that did exist for some middle class black families. Also, it showed to their white counterparts that black people can “function” within “their” society and shouldn’t be perceived as a threat. Watching those tv shows made me believe I could have what I saw on tv, it just seemed realistic.
      And I can bet if the show did run with a high class wealthy family, it wouldn’t have been such a success. At that time, it would appear to sell a fantasy, cause the average black person was not living like that unless their profession was a doctor (Cosby show), lawyer, etc. And I don’t think black people were interested in fantasies at that time, considering they had to deal with real issues.
      There is a time and place for everything. People are not born running. They crawl, stand, walk, jog, and then run. It just seemed that was the right move to make.

      Oh...

      Mermaids a d sirens are known monsters that kill and eat sailors.
      How did they become beautiful white women to be fought over as a character portrayal?

    Raven DID THE MF THING FOR DISNEY. After that you started to see a whole lot of teens come out with shows with the same narrative. To produce and direct your own show at a young age, that’s big. Disney never treated black teens right. They always have to work extra hard just to make something happen. Smh she had to fight Disney just to get the idea out there and then they wanted her to play CHELSEE and annaliese play Raven. Annaliese and Raven both agreed that they roles should be switched and then Raven fought to get Orlando onboard. Disney didn’t like the whole black family thing . It was originally supposed to be like mixed ish. Raven is the one that fought that to have a black mother and a black father who were both successful, a lawyer and a professional chef and restaurant owner, I’m proud of her. Still years later, it was the best comedy teen sitcom Disney ever had. Now her new show Raven home is on the same path. Raven had been in this business since she was 3. Hella talented, Disney almost played themselves.
