Last weekend I was in Chicago and had a Lyft driver from Haiti. I told him in the early 80’s I had a soccer coach at Vogelsinger soccer camps that, we were told played for the Haitian World Cup team. I said we called him “Minute” pronounced “Manoo”. Everyone loved him.
I’ve never forgotten him over the years but I begin to think that it was just the national team (Not a World Cup appearance) being that Haiti does not show up for the World Cup. Perhaps I had remembered wrong.
When our young Lyft driver told me about the legendary Emanuel Sanon I did not put that together.
When I got home, I googled “Haiti World Cup”, again, I was young at the time and had no recollection of Haiti in the World Cup. Also, in the States at that time, soccer was RARELY on tv.
I lit up immediately when I saw everything about the 1974 Wold Cup and the goal of “Manno” against Dino Zoff.
I wish I had known this story as we spent days and nights learning soccer from him.
I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I, as well as all the other be coached had the utmost love for Manno.

3:10 I think Joe Gaetjens was the only other Haitian to score in a World Cup final. Only he was wearing a USA kit in 1950. The scene was Belo Horizonte. The opponent: England.

I hope they won’t outperform the USA, as I see from every region poorer countries outperform rich countries to say I want mighty Netherlands could be outperforming the rest but in the result the poorer country from Europe called Croatia outperform the Netherlands and I don’t want to see poorer nations like a the Philippines, India, or even Bangladesh outperforming Japan in 2026.
Seeing Japan as a runner up against a Bangladesh or Philippines is to say I want the rich country to win but the result that the poorer country won over the rich country I don’t want to see that in 2026 or that the USA got eliminated by Haiti and Haiti make it further than USA.

When you do bad things to others it follows you. Trinidad & Tobago soccer never recovered from this fraudulent act by some selfish men plotting to dethrone a sovereign nation. This historic moment in our nation's history was literally stolen from us as we were on our way as the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to represent itself in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. So, if you're wondering why Haiti is getting its share of bad luck now, this is one of the reason. You don't do these kinds of things thinking you'll get away with it. I have no empathy for it, Haiti hurt us and now is there turn to get hurt.
