This time on THE IDENT REVIEW, Christmas time has arrived! Continuing a tradition that dates back to the 1960s, BBC One has introduced its unique festive sequences for the season! Building upon the collaboration with Shaun the Sheep last year, this year sees a partnership with some new friends, the Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse!
The Ident Review began in May 2018 and since has spawned over 100 episodes and even a spin-off show, the Ident Review Extra! It remains a firm AMTV favourite to this day!

I loved last year’s idents, they were so comical, but I think these are the absolute *BEST* they have such a beautiful and wholesome air to them and feel so classic, like they could’ve aired on TV back in the 70s or something, but these aired THIS YEAR in *2022* and yet they feel so nostalgic, as if you’ve seen them before I love it! Let’s cherish these idents while they last
These idents are so artistic, it feels like i'm watching a classic Disney animation

I love these so much, but the Friends ident is my favourite. There is a wholesome sense of togetherness and the placement of the fox by the one is so satisfying and lovely. A brilliant review Adam 🥰❤️❤️

The first XMAS idents of BBC ONE's "Lens" era...
I absolutely LOVE these idents! Probably my favourite BBC One Christmas idents of the 2020s so far. The hand-drawn animation reminds me of the 1988 Christmas ident. I haven't read the book, but I am planning on watching the adaptation. Christmas has officially begun!

Beautiful idents, my only criticism would be that it would have been marginally better if they had included elements of the 'lens' look in the idents, especially considering it's the first year that they have been in use but that's just me being very picky!🎄🎄🎄🎄

Hi Adam, they have created truly beautiful idents for this Christmas on BBC One. It made me go back to my childhood. I was born in 1985, so my first Christmas I really still remember is 1989. And BBC One Christmas presentation was always wonderful to see. I remember back growing up when the Christmas idents were only revealed at lunchtime on Christmas Eve and they would be "packed away" by the close down of Boxing Day. Not the full 30 days or so we get to see them now. It is a shame that the BBC are the only ones who do annual new Christmas idents. ITV gave up long ago at regular new Christmas presentation. They recycled their 2013 Christmas idents in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, with just maybe one extra added into the rotation. I wonder if you felt the same? As ITV offering for this Christmas is appalling. Have you seen them?

"Journey" takes my breath away. I'd love to hear a full score, it sounds like it ends prematurely. Hopefully there'll be a soundtrack to this film which contains it.

I get a lot of vibes from previous idents from the mists of time, obviously Christmas Pudding, but also the Arctic setting of 1991 and 1993, and in the last one, the snowy view of 2015's news ident. Like last year, a clear separation into morning, afternoon and evening, too. I get the impression that anything 'more' wouldn't suit the art style, so it does what it sets out to do. The afternoon one is good for long announcements, a less obvious loop compared to the other two. Lead contender for this year, I don't expect much elsewhere, with ITV and Channel 4 in transition brand wise. We'll wait and see on RTE.
Through the BBC might not be watched as much these days due to modern technology having better content, These Christmas idents are quite nice.

Are these just these just the images shown as it’s announced what the next program is or shown in full before a selection of clips of programmes to be shown this Christmas by BBC1?
This is reminiscent of the BBC1 idents of 1991-1996. The "camera" doesn't move, the animation is stoppy and stilted (you can see the frames easily as opposed to 3D CGI), and the focus is on one particular aspect of the ident. I swear, if somebody somewhere can visualise it, you could either crop out or digitally erase the current BBC One logo, fix the aspect ratio to 4:3, insert a numeral "1" or the word "ONE" somewhere, and use any of the iterations of the BBC logo from the analogue age, and it would not be out of place.
By the way, does anyone know why the blocks in these idents get smaller? The first "B" block is bigger than the second, which is bigger than the "C" block. Or am I the only that noticed it?

If I may be frank this almost looks like the first after Brexit idents.
If the oneness was trying to reunite the U.K. after Brexit I believe it did the opposite. These sets of idents are perfect. Great animation and music this is perfect.

I liked the 2021 indents more, I felt like they were more fitting in with the rest of the Lens idents despite the fact the Lens idents weren’t even in use then
In a way I feel like these should’ve been the 2021 idents and the Shaun the Sheep package should’ve been the 2022 idents
In Christmas 2021 was Shaun the Sheep, in this Christmas 2022 is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.

Cute. Not a fan at all of the output of the BBC anymore - I miss the heyday of the 80s and 90s - but these are nice and Christmassy.
