- It is with a heavy heart I bring this news to all the eagle lovers of the Captiva nest. Lusa began to have difficulty breathing and was wobbly & unstable, moving around tonight. Lusa started gasping for air badly at 09:43 and Lusa took her last breath lying next to her sibling Cal as she passed away at 12:37 timestamp (03:22:50am). My deepest condolences to the entire Captiva team, to Connor & to all the viewers of this nest. I know every one will be deeply affected by Lusa's passing. When there is more information to share I will pin to the comment section in the morning. I am so sorry to see this happen and I hope that we will be able to find out what caused this tragic death. RIP sweet Lusa - you had a short life but it was full. You gave us all so many wonderful memories of happiness. I am glad you had Cal to comfort you in these last moments so you were never alone! ❤ You will never be forgotten 💔 RIP baby.

Background: Connie has been the resident eagle since 2009 & she is believed to be at least 20 years old. Clive is the resident male & has been around since 2021. His age is unknown.
Last season, Connie laid two eggs but only one hatched - CE9 (Connick). Connick began to lose flight feathers and then on April 4th 2023 fell from the nest. He was rescued by CROW & taken to Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. After months of evaluation and treatments, Connick continued to drop feathers and has been named non releasable. He will be transferred to the National Zoo early next year and live out his live as an ambassador bald eagle.
Location: The nest is located on Captiva Island off the coast of Fort Myers Florida. After Hurricane Ian destroyed the nest in 2022, Window to Wildlife built a new nest in the same tree and Connie and Clive returned to use the nest.
This morning Connor put out a live video to discuss the events on the nest and the passing of Lusa, what he thinks about what may have caused her death, what will happen to her body and possible intervention if Cal displays any signs and symptoms. Thank you Connor and Window to Wildlife for taking the time to answer all our questions and to be transparent in your thought process during the past three days of Lusa being unwell. My deepest condolences and heartfelt thanks for the work you do Connor. Lusa gave us all so many happy moments and memories and now she will live on in spirit in Cal 🌹💞We will miss Lusa very much and hold her memory safe in our hearts. RIP sweet Lusa 💞

That is so heartbreaking ☹️😔. I can’t believe this happened! Cal proved to be a perfect brother, as horrible as the situation was, and despite there being no good to come out of this at all, I am still thankful Lusa had Cal there with her and that she didn’t have to die alone like some of the other horrible eaglet deaths that we’ve seen happen. Lusa was looking better, but I guess the cam didn't show the extent of Lusa's suffering.😔
I do wonder what the cause is, but we may never know. They said that a necropsy, would only be informative, if performed within 24 hours. So, unless the parents push the body over the side of the nest, that info will be lost. They, said there's no way they are going to go up there, as that would put Cal in danger. Cal could try to get away and jump off the nest, etc., which is about 75 feet high.
Hopefully, it's not something that's contagious and this will not affect Cal. 🙏

I hope they can retrieve his body and send it to an NCBI lab. At the very least send blood samples from Connick for advanced testing. I don't think he had a foot injury. I think that blood seapage was a symptom of something genetic passing from one or both parents. Likely one with the sad nest history.

Why did it happen?
My guess would be mouse poison. It radiates all the way to the top of the food chain. Mice eat it and are eaten by scavengers like coons, opossums, and cats, which are eventually eaten by animals higher up on the food chain... Like eagles. It takes time to build up to fatal levels so animals can seem fine for some time until they eat one too many contaminated meals and bleed out internally.

So heartwrenching Lady Hawk. Lusa and Cal were approaching the exciting time of more branching and exploring. when this tragic event occurred. Lusa will no longer be able to do it, but will be right there encouraging Call all the way. Not easy for Cal or P’s as they are not human, but likely sense this sudden shift in their own way. With so many unviable eggs at different nests, the loss of two females at Kistachie National Park, and the list goes on and now poor Lusa. Deeply sadden by little Eagleton that died from her infected talon. Am sure she brought great delight to all who viewed her birth and being raised by her two parents and playing with her brother who is now alone.

Oh, no! I thought she was better, although seemed more lethargic late afternoon. This is the 3rd eagle I've watched die this season, plus 5 owlets. Hard to imagine a cut would end here, or bleed so much, from the other foot as well. I guess there's no hope of retrieving the body, due to risk for Cal, as he might fall. But it would be good to find out the cause.
Glad Lusa had Cal to snuggle with for comfort. At 9:30am, he partially covered her with leaves, grass, sticks, and bark. Get up! Then sat with her a long time and watched, which was wonderful, for me, anyway. His eagle 'wake'. Then around 9:55am, he tried the bark again, a little more earnestly this time. "Lusa! You missed breakfish!" Poor little guy, he doesn't know life without her. Lusa is missed, more tears for an eagle. Sympathies for all involved with this nest. Enjoy the Rainbow Bridge, little one, play with my late cats and horses, as everyone is friends there. I'm silly, but it helps. 💔
When I heard about the news about Lusa's passing, it made me sad and upset. I did not know Lusa as I’ve just recently found your channel (Love It), but I watched her passing. We’ll never know what went wrong but she seemed to go very quickly and not in too much distress. But that doesn’t fill the hole her passing left on our hearts.
Lusa, you were a beautiful wild creature and you are much loved. I hope to meet you when if I am allowed to cross the Bridge. But I find comfort knowing you are flying high over that Bridge now. Farewell, sweet Lusa.
