But were Amazons real? Join Adrienne Mayor as she recounts tales of women warriors and uncovers some realities behind the myths. Archaeological discoveries of battle-scarred female skeletons buried with weapons now confirm that warlike women were not mere figments of the Greek imagination. Combining classical literature and art, nomad traditions, and archaeology, this illustrated lecture reveals how historical horsewomen-archers of the steppes influenced ideas and images of the warriors known to the ancient Greeks as Amazons.
Speaker Bio: Adrienne Mayor is a research scholar in the Classics Department and History and Philosophy of Science Program, Stanford University. Her books include The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World; The First Fossil Hunters; a biography of Mithradates, The Poison King (National Book Award nonfiction finalist); and Gods and Robots.

Extraordinary lecture, Mrs Mayor is awesome in fluency and consistency of her speech that I felt like that I watched some top class documentary. Specially Scythian bow and weapon subjects that I am interested in. Every aspect is systematyzed perfectly actually. Bravo Mrs Mayor!
The Tales of the Narts from Ossetia may well contain Scythian history and habits. Only one volume (20% )was translated so far.
I have Dr Mayor s book The Amazons...it is great and is well researched & illustrated. I m reading some passages again. The people of the Steppes left behind the Pazyryk culture...artefacts shown on UA-cam. The Cemetery in the Sands, The Princess of Ukok, The Tarim Basin Mummies, The Kingdom of Khotan, The Saka Empire in India...all must be seen. Prof. Viktor Sarianidis unearthed a whole town and was confident that he disc- overed the place where the Soma of the Rig Veda was made[see The Black Sands]. The Scythians at the beginning were Vedic. It is believed that they were closely related to the Thracians with whom they had much in common. I hope more is to follow.
Excellent lecture. Alexander the great had acquired a slave woman thought to be an Amazon who was his intimate companion through all his campaigns. {refer to his trilogy}
Ossetians and Wakhis are descendants of Scythians. The Wakhis are from the E Scythians/Sakas. The Sakas had the Saka Empire that lasted 400 yrs. I am happy to learn about the Indo scythians/ Jatts in N India...among the Sikhs mostly. Their Yamnaya genetics is known. Jatts most likely linked to the E Iranic Massa-Getai and to the Getae of Dacia. [ Getae and Massa Getai are from Greek sources; Greek has no J sound as in Jatts].
