@@GigglebunsUV Im a producer, and it happens because the space bar is used to play, stop, and stop when youre actually recording. Its one of the things we use the most, after the mouse i think 🤣
@@SebastianJeri yeah, i am also a producer. i know the space bar is used for that, but I was implying why they hit it so hard, not why they hit it in general
3:00 I would've gladly paid money just to hear that aggressive af guitar isolated from everything else. It, paired with the vocals, is what gives the song its aggression.
Still Waiting - THE MOST favourite track of mine, for 13 years knowing alternative and punk music I've NEVER deleted it from my playlist. Every single time it goes through my body, engulfing me and giving me an infinite energy!!! I hope that in the future my favourite band will make such songs as this with energetic screaming Deryck's vocal! STILL WAITING FOREVER!!!
Damn Deryck. This is like such a dream come true. I used to listen to these tracks back when I was a teen and really tried to figure all the elements in them. It's so awesome that you're now doing these session break-downs and revealing the parts. Please do more! Cheers from Europe
One of my favourite things about mixing is how when solo’d, things like a guitar can sound thin (riff), but when it’s in the context of the mix and the bass is filling out the low end, it sounds amazing.
I was in “goddam I’m dead again” music video and I’ve also met them a few times, got to hear they’re stories and they’re just overall great guys! Derek is just pure greatness. The recovery and dedication he’s put into music and these albums, it’s crazy in the best way
I thought it was just "so am I" in the background, never had heard the "down". I also just discovered the bridge riff is also played in the last chorus, there's so much going that I never heard that
Deryck I love these videos. Please do not stop making these! PS PLEASE COME TO PORTLAND, OR FOR YOUE NEXT TOUR I’D PAY $500 FOR A TICKET. Thanks for highlighting my comment :)
Man, I always loved sum 41 and other Punk artists. And it’s probably dumb to the obvious , but until I saw this video . I never new that the chorus had that nice harmonized melody . “So am I down?” First heard this song 15 years ago
Don't need bass anymore, just drop tune the rhythm guitar, tape up the bottom 2 strings to mute them and go. Lead will fill in the rest. (I'm definitely joking so don't get all butthurt)
I love these videos so much! It's so cool to see how much stuff is in a song that you don't consciously hear, until it's pointed out, like the "So am I down?" I didn't hear it before, but I do now!
I am so glad to grow up during the ps2 generation, a lot of this music in the soundtracks of games like burnout, test drive eve of destruction, need for speed has all shaped my love of this type of music
As an electronic music producer who's looking into creating guitar driven music as a side project (punk rock/alternative was all i would listen to in my formative years, always wanted to start/play in a band) videos like these are really insightful. I currently don't have anything to record my guitars into my DAW but as soon as i find something feasible, i'm gonna have fun with it. thank you for this!
I like how every artist that breaks down their tracks totally doesn't remember how they did it, and they have to act like they know but really they are figuring it out with us.
wish he went more into the verse, like he could have explained who came up with it and how I'm sure dave added this part but it would have been cool to hear more.
I'm surprised he didn't mention how Freaking Metal the Verses are. That is a very Heavy metal verse riff on guitar. Not so much pop punk like the rest of their stuff.
Got my tix for the 15th anniversary tour in Michigan! Haven't seen you guys since the free 89X show in Detroit Michigan back in 2011; my friend & I dipped outta school senior year for that shit
This guy recovered SO good from that alcohol! This band will live forever.
Yeah ,
Yeah ,
Good for him. That's a tough beast to wrangle
Yeah ,
Yeah ,
plz, more track breakdowns
Fuck yeah!
Pat MacDonald I agree this is awesome.
YESA
Never knew it was "DOWN" I could clearly hear SO AM I..."
I heard “so am I still”
Never noticed the "So am I down?" harmony.
Me either! All I heard was the "so" part lol
I just thought it was Dave and Cones harmonizing.
I don’t know why but I feel like every artist or producer that talks about their tracks always uses all their force to hit the spacebar haha
Bryan Contreras Shawn McMahon (former producer for slipknkt) would pummel his spacebar during our classes.
i think when they are recording it like that, they do it to sync up the audio. even though here they really didnt do a good job of syncing

Guitar
These multitracks are on youtube, just search "still waiting (guitar only)"
Track break down of "We're all to blame", this song is just perfect for me
4:30 And of course... *THE* riff.
So gnarly
Reminds me of papa roach
They have always been labelled as pop punk band but I’ve always admired that undertone of thrash / classic metal in their guitar playing.
Dave…👀
Yep especially in this album and chuck. If you haven't noticed, "the bitter end" is almost a phrase for phrase homage to Metallica's "battery."

This. This.
I actually really liked No Brains and Mr. Amsterdam, but the singles from the album were great too. It was a really great thing from beginning to end.

WOW that lead guitar riff coming back in the last chorus! Never noticed it before, so cool.
Such an intelligent guy. Considering the content of his earlier songs, it really catches you off guard.
why is this not a series? would watch it all night
I love this break-down videos. I lean so much
I leaned so much that I fell out of my chair too.

2:00 16 years later, I discovered the "so am I down" line that I never noticed before
I always thought that it was a backround noises lol
The only thing I noticed about it was the “so” but then the main vocals kinda made the rest hard to hear
I thought it was just "so am I" in the background, never had heard the "down". I also just discovered the bridge riff is also played in the last chorus, there's so much going that I never heard that
1. Here's the guitar.
2. Here's the vocals.
3. Story time.

I love you Deryck!! Sum 41 needs to live forever!!
Truly brilliant writing and musicianship. Still so amazing to this day. I absolutely love this view of the song. The harmonies are simply beautiful.
this is an amazing resource to anybody who makes their own records. makes me feel a lot better about my own decisions on recording
I'm a 13 year old I love this time of music and nirvana
nobody gives a fuck
OoooOOooO a special snowflake
Of course he doesn't isolate the bass for a sec...OF COURSE
Nobody hears the bass Anyway
@@randyrrs7028 no but we all feel it none the less
LOL
Man as a bass player i feel this album had the most bass vibe in their discography
Don't need bass anymore, just drop tune the rhythm guitar, tape up the bottom 2 strings to mute them and go. Lead will fill in the rest. (I'm definitely joking so don't get all butthurt)
I'll never hear this song the same again. I see them in concert tomorrow too! SO glad I found this.
We love u Deryck from indonesia 🖤🖤🖤
Daerah mana ka?
The pick slide is my favorite part too!
I love these videos so much! It's so cool to see how much stuff is in a song that you don't consciously hear, until it's pointed out, like the "So am I down?" I didn't hear it before, but I do now!
Greatest modern band. Incredible versatility and endurance. All around great talent.
Probably my favorite album ❤
what i like about sum 41 is they don't repeat the way they sound from they previous album. they've always change. different album, different sounds.
I am so glad to grow up during the ps2 generation, a lot of this music in the soundtracks of games like burnout, test drive eve of destruction, need for speed has all shaped my love of this type of music
SO stoked that this exists
I fucking love his voice
Damn, I simply forgot how incredible sum 41 really were!
I honestly never noticed that "So Am I Down" in the chorus... Now it's so clear to me...
There are so many song I want to see on this format!
Dude, you are a fucking legend.

Lavender Llama if you can afford it, a scarlett solo is a great interface to direct record to any daw.
One of my first ever favourite songs. Was awesome seeing it broken.
Can always hear the Metallica influence when you solo the guitars, love it though
That main verse riff reminds me of Disposable Heroes
I love you sum 41 so much thank you guys for making music I'm glad I grew up listening to you guys
loooooove this. I could watch musicals break down their music all day lng.
Still 1 of my favorite 2000s bangers!
Nofx harmonies are on point
Probably one of my favourite Sum 41 songs
now watching the music video after this
I like how every artist that breaks down their tracks totally doesn't remember how they did it, and they have to act like they know but really they are figuring it out with us.
Track Breakdown for The Hell Song?
This videos are the best, thanks Deryck!
This mix sounds better than the original! They should reissue the song with this mix!
So am I... Still Waiting for the next Sum 41 album! Cant find a good reason... why it should be as short as 13 voices was!
wish he went more into the verse, like he could have explained who came up with it and how I'm sure dave added this part but it would have been cool to hear more.
Agreed
More of these please!!
These videos are great Deryck, keep doing these breakdowns!
Please do more of those !!!!!!!!!!!
love it love it love it love it love it love it
complex and so damn beautiful
Just bought tickets for the Denver show!
the screen recording is not synced with the rest...
If there is one thing I love, its whem bands talk about how they made their songs etc. And this was just SO good!!
Best song ever, it’s 2018 and I still listen to it. How many are still listening to this timeless track?
Iconic
Awesome, great songs
I could watch videos like this all day long
This video really reminds me just how much I LOVE this song!
We need more of these videos!
Pro Tools is not in sync with the audio...but this is still awesome! Would love more like this.
He said that this album was done quickly and put out quickly and it worked.
I agree. Still my favorite album of their's!
I'm surprised he didn't mention how Freaking Metal the Verses are.
That is a very Heavy metal verse riff on guitar. Not so much pop punk like the rest of their stuff.
One of my favorite songs ever!
My everything
The reason why I became a fan a long time ago is because of this song.
Still listening today my man!!
i could watch these videos all day...shows how much work goes into making just one song let alone a whole album. AMAZING!
These videos are fantastic. More bands should do this.
Sometimes I just sing "sooo aaaam I down" by myself and feel glorious.
Love the breakdown. Awesome.
Temazo!!
i really like the "so am i down " part
Much love one of favorite bands of all time
It's so good to see this vids breaking down each part of one of my favorite songs from back in the day, cheers and keep it up!
I wanna make music as memorable as this song
Just more than awsome
Got my tix for the 15th anniversary tour in Michigan!
Haven't seen you guys since the free 89X show in Detroit Michigan back in 2011;

More bands should do this, it's always a great watch and listen.
Used to think it was “so am I dead” 😂
This sorta stuff brings the big boys real close to the audience. Loving it!
You definitely should do this for ever track. I love breakdown videos like this!
Exactly, what I need. THANK YOU! Love to see more and more :)!
(Rick Beato does similar on his channel)
