    Randle here in Texas! Fun fact! Star Trek TNG S3E7 "The Enemy" completely ripped off "Enemy Mine"!

    • @TheUnapologeticGeek
      @TheUnapologeticGeek  4 роки тому +6

      I came REALLY close to mentioning that! There’s also a Stargate SG1 episode that rips it off too, as I understand it.
      It’s also very similar to an episode of OG Battlestar Galactica, but that came before Enemy Mine.

    • @TheUnapologeticGeek
      @TheUnapologeticGeek  4 роки тому +3

      Oh, and there’s also an episode of DS9 with Sisko and Dukat that STARTS the same way, but goes in a decidedly different direction. 😁

      @@TheUnapologeticGeek No doubt! As you mentioned in your video, it's a well used story line in many different genre of film and TV.

    One of my teachers in school devoted a whole over 2 hour double lesson to watching and discussing Enemy Mine, and it is one of the big childhood memories i have, kinda one of the experiences that moulded me into the man i am today, at 43. I don't know if it was the setting i first watched it in that made it such a profound moment for me or just the film itself, or both, but when the lights in the classroom turned on, everyone in the room was either hurriedly rubbing tears away from their face, or just sat in silence staring at the end credits looking affected. I really rate my teacher for doing that you know. First time i saw enemy mine i didn't notice the kinda "straight to video" vibe that some of the effects looked like because i was totally hooked on the story and the characters it didn't matter, or even REGISTER! That is the sign of a good movie. I could go on for hours so I'll just say i enjoyed your review a lot. Fairplay, I've just subbed too so im off to see what else is on here. Safe mate

    I’m shocked this movie isn’t much more popular. I love the ending.

    I read somewhere that Louis Gosset Jr.'s portrayal of Jeriba Shigan was so iconic that even today there are actors who are taught to study the alien gestures and mannerisms he imbued the character with because he's widely considered the gold standard for acting as an alien. I'd also recommend that fans of the movie pick up The Enemy Papers, which is the trilogy written by Longyear and expands far beyond the film (without including too many spoilers I do feel I should say that, no, it does not include a literal mine as part of the ending so be prepared for a few surprises and emotional gut-punches) and further explores the themes of Enemy Mine with the same heart and soul (with some additional world-building and a fascinating look into Drac society). I've read the trilogy about as many times as I have other sci-fi favorites like Dune or Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy and rank them up there as some of the finest sci-fi fiction written in the era.

    Gossett saw a homeless boy on GMA in the 80s. He took him as his ward being so moved by his story. The lad grew up and went to college due to Lou's parentage.

    There were so many unexpected moments in the movie that made it better than the typical enemies facing off storyline. This includes the raising of an alien child, and once again getting thrown, literally and figuratively, back into the conflict. My main criticism is that the human's motivation for the war isn't tempered by an equivalent alien one.

    What a surprise choice! I think I've only seen this film twice in my life but it strangely holds a special place. First as part of a Saturday night VHS marathon back in the 80s alongside Legend and Krull. Then I seen it being used in a Family Guy joke and promptly grabbed a dvd copy. So underrated! Way better than Dune. Cool Sci fi elements but just a heart warming story overall I thought. I need to dig out that dvd 😁

    This movie is pretty great, but the scene at the beginning with the sandworm and turtle creature _traumatized me_ as a child. Having not watched the movie in several years I recently looked for that scene, thinking that it probably wouldn't hold up and look silly for today's standards, and boy, how wrong I was. It still looks as terrifying as it did back then.

    Really good review once again. I remember watching this when I young the 80's, and being disappointed because of the way it pushed as being full of action. Then watching it a few years later and being impressed. I bought the short story collection to read, which I believe is called Manifest Destiny. Keep the good work going.

    Love this movie. I own the bluray., no special features of course.
    Such a good movie I’ve always wanted more so few months ago I decided I wanted to read the novella it was based on, only to discover that it was the first of a trilogy. So I ordered the hardcover of all 3 in 1 titled the enemy papers, but unfortunately it was lost in the mail and I never received it.
    Good review by the way.

    Great review. The movie is classic and holds up today. The story also similar to “Hell in the Pacific”. A John Boorman film with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune.
    I don’t agree about Maurice Jarre score being subpar. It is minimalist, yes, but when orchestra soars - it soars beautifully. And the main theme is really good and memorable. And not overused. Main title atmospheric opening is great too.

    Great review again! And a movie I should watch again and possess! I had seen it when it originally came out, and was kinda 'meh' about it. Having gotten acclimatized to Blade Runner, Alien and such, Enemy Mine just seemed weak in comparison. And to this day, it's hard for me not to compare it to Robinson Caruso On Mars. But thanks for the review, as its put a new appreciation to Enemy Mine for me when I see the clips and performances now. Lou is truly amazing in it at least!

    I love this film dearly. I watched it on VHS countless times as a kid in the early 90s. The score, costumes, set design and of course Gossit Jr are all outstanding. It's unfortunate that it never really gained a mainstream audience but I'm fine with it staying a true cult film. The only bummer is I believe it's leaving Disney Plus for some reason...so the younger gen of film lovers will have a harder time finding it.

    I think this movie is an absolutely riveting character study with three main characters, one human, framed by low-effort generic space opera rubbish I'd expect from a contemporary TV show. If the entire film "clicked" as well as the main performances and dialog, it would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
