You have to be very careful with your feet when you use buckets for gardening because the last thing you want to do is kick the bucket. Lol 😂

For watering, I use at least quart sized bottles (wine bottle probably the best).
I fill them with water, invert them and quickly shove them in and out of the soil so the opening doesn't get clogged.
As soil dries out, air is drawn into the bottle and water released, thus giving a more even moisture.
Plastic bottles collapse and degrade in sunlight.

Ever consider drilling holes on the walls right at the rock line height? Self wicking style.

I have been growing in buckets for the last 7 years. Each year I grow tomatoes, tomatillos, ground cherries, jalapenos, kale, red and green peppers, thai hot pepper, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and this year I will try for the first time potatoes and lettuce (lettuce seed spread all over and, as it grows to be trimmed weekly). I would love to try growing grapes and onions in buckets, do you have any suggestions. **** note, tomatillos have huge root systems that will completely take over the entire bucket and a massive amount of huge leaves that make the plant in the bucket really easy for the wind to blow over.

I want to grow zucchini and we seem to always get the bore weevil. Can I plant a zucchini in a 5 gal bucket and will the bore weevil still get to the zucchini? Thanks for your ideas for the plants. Hope to do this idea this year.

    • @greensnmachines

You can grow a zucchini in a 5 gallon bucket, but being in the bucket alone is not a way to guarantee safety from pests.

Hai!! A fan from India. We have tomato plants in grow bags. They are growing well but the size of the flower was small...
Please tell me any tip for that.
    Thanks in advance...!

    • @annedwards358

that has to do with the type of tomato plant..the genetics of the strain...there is no growing tip that will give you bigger flowers.....growing tips can give you a different amount of blooms but it will not change the size.. only genetics does that

How did that many holes in the bottom work for you because I'm thinking you wanted to go up the side about an inch or 2 so that all the water does not drain out and will keep your roots moist Just curious because I am getting my bucket garden ready to go for the Spring

    • @JodyAveline
      @JodyAveline Рік тому

I make holes in the bottom about 8 to 10 of them and just like you begged with your question, about 1 inch up from the bottom I make 5 or 6 holes around the bucket as well. I have been growing in buckets for years now. At the end of the season, I wash those buckets and rinse them. The mistake I make every year is spacing between my tomato plants and my tomatillos, I like to plant lots of tomatoes and tomatillos and built like a wall.

Did you try the holes-in-the-side method (no holes in the bottom)? Seems that it should keep the upper soil moist exactly like the self-watering system advocated by many, but without the added cost and assembly time.

Should add peat moss to the buckets, because containers tend to dry out quickly, 50% of each is a good mix

gravel or any rock in the bottom is actually far worse than just using your grow medium, the "saturation zone" works its way to the top, which is exactly what you don't want in a bucket, you can actually see it happen in a clear container, try without the rock maybe....
