I've been using Full Bucket synth plugins for years but I've yet to get to grips with their primitive patch memory system that relies on the host DAW rather than on a proper patch manager. It seems that it's impossible to make the displayed patch name stay updated to a newly-saved patch or to a loaded patch, so there's no reliable way to know which patch you're using. Maybe someone could explain...
Cardinal is another free modular system which I believe is an offshoot of the free VCV Rack and operates in a DAW too.

damn it is also free as the vsts? this guy is amazing, cardinal is algo good and using ableton you could probably connect them with cv communication.
