I think it's because we want to be seen as the good guys of the world that are great craic and always up for having a laugh. If we go out and protest en masse that image gets tarnished somewhat. We collectively put too much weight on how we're seen by everyone else in the world and we derive our confidence from it. I'm sure it's probably a fallout of being oppressed for so long but I just wish we could have enough confidence in our own culture and ability to pave a different path..

Moved to ireland from sweden in the end of 2021, been loving it here as i came here for work in Cork.
People here are one of the kindest and frendliest people i've ever met, super social and just overall fun people to be around.
Customer service here is amazing and service workers treat you amazingly.
But there are so many things in ireland i never expected to see.
Housing crisis here is no joke, 900 euros for a moldy studio apartment/room with rusted pipes so the water comes out thick orange.
"newley renovated" houses that they only put some paint over it and after a while the paint starts falling apart and show the problem under and the response you get is "meh it is what it is".
hundreds of empty houses and apartment buildings everywhere that woudl easily fix the housing crisis, but they just let them sit because its too much work.
For such a rich country to look the way it does just shows how corrupt the government really is.
The goverment really failed its people here and its so sad to see since the irish has gone through so much but at the same time are the nicest people really hurts to see.
I really hope something gets done about it soon, the irish deserves it.

From Wikipedia: 'A Garda Armed Support Unit may be deployed to support local Garda officers in certain high-risk operations. This principally involves offering armed assistance to ordinary Gardaí who are dealing with an incident in which firearms or other weapons (knives, etc.) have been produced. It also includes:
Confronting and disarming persons who are carrying knives or guns
Providing tactical support to other Gardaí carrying out searches
Carrying out high visibility static and rolling checkpoints and other operations to counteract the movements of criminals

Where is the Ireland that is home Cu Chulain and all the other great heroes? Now we just have big cities where we move over for the money, sometimes into homelessness or poverty, and farmers fields with 10ft hedgerows so you cant see the beauty outside of them.
