In my opinion, this is the perfect side hustle (or main hustle) for creative people who enjoy writing and want to set their own schedule and work from anywhere on a variety of projects.
As a side hustle freelancer, I've made upwards of $1,000/month! Being my own boss has always been a dream of mine. In this video, I'm going to tell you how to make it happen for you too! We cover where to start, where to find jobs, how to build a portfolio (I even give you a template!), what to charge, and the impact of artificial intelligence on this industry. Let's go!

It always seemed very appealing to me but I can’t come up with a talent I have to make into a job 🤣💀
As a note to those who are considering freelance vs salary - really consider what you get being on salary and why the wage may be so much lower, and why you need to charge more as a freelance. Ex. laptop, desk set up, software, health insurance, consistent and stable hours, marketing, professional development, non-billable work like tax forms and some emails, employer match CPP/ retirement (in Canada, even if the company doesn't have any retirement funds, employers pay 5.95% of your salary into CPP) etc. You could also negotiate something like set number of hours a week/ month at a lower rate or variable hours at a higher rate. Also be careful with any non-competes a company may want you to sign!
I very much low balled myself starting out in freelance as I didn't consider any of that. Once you start at one wage it is very hard to move up too drastically with one company too.

I got a degree in economics and I think freelancing, specifically with regards to one's rate is really intriguing. I loved how you talked about the extra cost for "dropping what you're doing". Literally it's opportunity cost! Is that $10 more than the activity that you're currently doing. I like that remark you made. Loved the video

I really like how you framed the hours per month or higher rate. I'm stuck in the same position you were in - not enough hours per month to feel comfortable (and not look for another job, leaving them) and its been some time so I should look into raising my rate. I think I will go to them and frame it how you did!

Hi Zoe, I’m not really interested in becoming a copywriter but I’ve been working as a freelance translator (commercial, not literary) for quite a few years and I just want to say how much I love that you’re talking about the freelance journey at all and how I appreciate your insights. Being a freelancer can feel quite lonely and as a bit of a trap at times and you help me feel more "legitimate" and also more grateful to be in a position I’m in - I’m now established enough to have been able to get a good raise in December and I know that when I work harder, I can earn more and that’s a good thing. Last but not least, I want to say that you help me normalize the idea of having more jobs in different fields which is something I’ve been (theoretically, so far) considering for a while as it doesn’t feel that secure to have all the eggs in one basket. You certainly give a lot of people a lot of positive vibes, hope and courage. Thank you so much, Zoe :)
Hi, I was considering freelance translation too since I'm bilingual but don't have a clue about what and how to do it. Could you tell me more about your background please?
@@KenshaableHi, I really don’t know if my experience could help you, as I suspect you are an English native speaker and the demand for translation might differ for English vs. smaller languages. You can probably tell English is not my first language - I’m Czech and translate from English into Czech and sporadically also into English. I studied English/American and Czech studies at university and already as a student started working in a smaller translation agency. I started as a proofreader and now I still work mostly with the same agency, as a translator. I just want to add that I believe it’s more important to have the skills, interest and morale than a specific course or degree, as an agency would typically hire you based on a test translation.

A huge problem is going to be AI. I taught ChatGPT 3.5 how to write really well. Maybe not as good as myself, but surprisingly close. Now, I have trained ChatGPT 4o how to write well; it's over.
But what if i want to write UA-cam scripts for creators, video & photographers? Is LinkedIn still the best place to look for clients and have your portfolio?

You can have a website if you want, but I just saved the doc as a PDF and sent it to whoever needed to see it
