The proposal to flood the User actually came from some local inhabitant/peasant/river worker something like that. The Belgian military picked up the idea and executed it.
That was fun to watch, I really missed this kind of content. Considering it was recorded in February, it also takes this whole "let's stay neutral, so we don't end up being in war with Russia" to a whole new level.
One of my favourite King Albert stories from World War 1 is that, because he was the only monarch who actually fought in the trenches with his soldiers, Belgium was one of the only countries who didn't execute deserters during that war, since he knew first hand how bad conditions on the front line were. Putting himself directly in harm's way makes him a lot braver than pretty much every other monarch in that conflict. Also, I'd go with "Satoban" (suh-toe-ban).
Wasn't even just him too, his wife Queen Elisabeth volunteered as a nurse in the frontlines and sponsored them while their son also joined the army at the age of 12

Can we get a part II just talking about Albert I? He’s such an interesting figure to talk about in history. Not everyday you hear about a King fighting alongside in a modern war.
Indy Neidell already made one in his The Great War UA-cam channel, he goes into details on King Albert's actions in WW1, as the channel also featured some other known people from the Great War

Fun fact about Albert I, the Soldier King; he was not the son of Leopold II. He was the nephew of the previous king. He really is a fascinating figure. From his upbringing, his war years till his unusual death.
I have to agree with Indy on Attack of the Dead Men. It is such a unique song, especially since you clearly feel a zombie-like and chemical warfare tone to the song. It feels really creepy, and I love it.

The battle of the Marne is well known because, as the French army was in a hurry, the headquarters requisitioned all the cabs of Paris to carry the soldiers. This episode is known as 'the taxis of the Marne'. The french press was in need for heroes and gave to king Albert the nickname of 'Knight-King' for his behaviour. As for Belgian neutrality, the only country that officially declared war to Belgium was Bolivia!
@@martinottesen1053 Quite anecdotic. Bolivia was allied to Germany, though not directly involved in the conflict. The declaration of war was forgotten by all parties until the 21st century, when one govt clerc found it buried in the archives. Since then the peace has been officially signed between both countries. This declaration of war was buried so deeply that several treaties of cooperation between Bolivia and Belgium were already in force since the 1950s. For the record, Germany did not declare war officially to Belgium in 1914. The Germans just took the right to pass through Belgium with their army.

For the first time, Indy kinda forgot of the main focus of the song. Belgium. And the legendary king who fought shoulder to shoulder with the common man.
They should definitely do a part two covering that, just like how they have gone into more depth with other songs. Like, they should do a second video on the Unkillable Soldier and cover all the wars he fought in, and his experience in Poland and China.

@@dylan_daugherty_ From the little bit of research I’ve done, it is hard to find anything on that event. Only thing I’ve found is that White Friday actually occurred on a Wednesday, and it is unknown as to whether the avalanche was malicious or incidental.
King Alberts death day was yesterday and since listening to Race to the Sea I have learned a lot about him. He truly was a wonderful man inside and out.

It literally says in the Title “Race To the Sea Failure of the Schlieffen Plan” idk about the Soldier of Heaven but They did exactly what the Title was they explained how the Schlieffen Plan Failed so dont Hate on them for not explaining the parts of the song Edit: I checked their Song about Soldier of Heaven and it only Said Mountain Warfare
Because retelling a battle that happened 100 years ago blow for blow is impossible due to lack of records remember those boys weren't taking breaks writing down what happens that day especially when like Indy said the tactic was to always attack the same for solider of heaven plus it was a better episode to discuss Alpine warfare as a whole then say "oh yes the Italians and Austro-Hungarian sat on blood mountain for several years and alot of soldiers died" it's better to discuss it in whole especially for a 20 min video
@@Ryjxz yes that's exactly what I mean. Usually the Sabaton History episodes cover the exact events mentioned in the song. The chorus to the song includes "For king and for country, we are flooding the river. Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea" and yet those events were barely mentioned 🤷♂️. And the video is literally all about the flooding. Still a cool, interesting episode but felt more like a 'Great War Channel' video rather than a Sabaton History one because it barely mentioned the actual event that the song is mainly referencing.

Speaking of the mellatica thing, I have only ever seen Sabaton misspelled once before and it was/still is on a playlist of a channel reacting to the music, for some reason they can name their videos correct but the playlist is called "Saboton" for some reason

Awesome to watch. Love what Joakim said about the good discovery Channel and the history Channel. I appreciate you guys being so open to teaching so much history about so many countries wars and heros and so on, because that in my view really is amazing, not to include how incredible trying to write songs in general is tough but you also are telling stories and writing them about history on top. Yall should receive some sort of award for doing what you do to teach in the music that yall write becauee I feel honored to have heard of yall for the first time last year and have been listening to sabaton non stopped ever since as well as watching indie do history lessons every single chance I get. I think "race to the sea" is one of the great tongue-in-cheek/mocking names for anything in history. Ranks up there with things 'big bang' theory, which was originally meant as an insult from the steady state theory supporters. Or phoney war (I like sitzkrieg personally) for the 6 months after the invasion of Poland. It both describes the overall change in movement after the failure to capture Paris. And imo, might be mocking the commanders of both armies by saying that they were more interested in having a race to the beach, than trying to wage war. (I am the very model of a modern major general....) Sure, it does not do a great job of telling history as a series of facts..... but it does a great job capturing a glance into the past at the same time.

This has always been one of those interesting what ifs to explore. Schlieffin doesn’t develop his plan to invade France through Belgium. Instead the German General Staff before WW1 develops a plan to make Alsace-Lorraine into a defensive wall with plans to hold the French there first with contingencies if the French go through Belgium so while French forces are bottlenecked into the only place they can go without risking British wrath over Belgium and the Germans throw everything at the Russians because the Russians are bigger but more disorganized and logistically backwards and the Germans studied how the Japanese beat the Russians with speed and maneuvering. And then after beating the Russians, they turn back onto the French. And all the while Germany never holds back their navy and instead uses that against France and Russia as well
Well the entire reason why they switched to the Schlieffen plan was the fact that defeating russia is a massive effort. THe japanease got it rather easy because russia couldnt supply that many troops in the far east and it was a war primarily decided in naval battle apart from a few (for the time giant) land battles. European russia was another problem altogether because, as Napoleon found out, its infrastructure sucked, there were millions of angry people there and the land is so huge your armies get streched thin easily. The switch to quickly defeat France was designed to exactly deal with the Russia problem. France had good infrastructure, germany still had accurate maps and plans of the country from the last war and the occupation period and most importantly germany had local supßeriority in menpower and arms to the french if they concentrated their main effort here. Against russia you will never gain a meaningful superiority that can decide the war while against France one battle, one breakthrough could easily decide the war. Additionally the Schlieffen plan had the benefit of immediatly knocking out french industry to a massive degree because their heavy industry was primarily in the north east of the country, the area germany would basically keep throughout the war. The problem with the Schlieffen plan wasnt its basic design but the fact there was no plan what to do if there were problems or if it didnt lead to french surrender. there wasno continengcy. A war as planned before the Schlieffen plan would have resulted in germany just starving to death long term. THe High seas fleet might dominate the french fleet in the north sea, but it cant leave it do to its supply lines. The french could still basically blockade germany by raiding in the atlantic do to germany not having the logistical reach to contest that. Nobody would go through the channel eather because every land based gun would blow the high seas fleet to pieces. And France with its full industry available and its colonial empire woulod be much stronger then in our timeline. A smaller front would actually be to Frances advantage, even if it is fighting in the mountains and hills of Elsass-Lorraine.
This is the episode i was looking forward to a lot because the story sounded fascinating, just from the song king albert and flooding sounded so cool. Had no idea how intense the early part of the war was, most of the education i had in Australia starts at the galipoli landings
Great episode! However, I noticed that the maps depicted the South of The Netherlands as being part of the German occupied territory (colored reddish). The Netherlands was neutral and not occupied or part of the alliance which included the Germans. Though there were some violations of the Dutch neutrality, it was mostly respected throughout the war :-)
The Ukranian rivers are really wide to begin with. The Don and the Dnieper drain Russia from the sea on the north all the way to the Black Sea. The vikings used them to trade with the middle east.
so if the Ukrainians manage to seize the crimean channel and opened the river. Some changes may occur that could benefit them in hypothetical questions
I know this might end up on deaf ears but I wanted to take a shot in the dark here by contacting through what i hope will reach the band Sabaton or at least one of the bandmembers. Currently we are at Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium with my girlfriend charlottes only reason to join me,which is Sabaton. When she saw there was a signing she was so excited she scratched her plans to see any pther band and stand in line for the signing. As she was over halfway and i was watching a few bands in the meantime I started to feel light in the head due to the recent heatwave that is going over the country and i started to feel like i could pass out at any time. She went out of the line to help me and place me somewhere in the shade so i would be okay but sacrificed her spot to meet her metalheroes. She has been religiously viewing both this channel and the sabaton channel almost daily. She always plays sabaton or the history channel on youtube while she is at home... Sabaton is the reason she fell in love with metal. I know I might just be one of the comments thzt will be forgotten in a heartbeat but i wanted to ask if Joakim or any of the bandmembers would have the time and heart to send her a personal message? Thank you in advance for wanting to read this post if you did.
I have an logo idea: Do the ''Sabbaton'' idea, but change the ''Abba'' part of the logo so it resambles the ABBA logo if they have one. Or do, Idk, Sanaton or Subathon cause the Sabbaton idea would maybe infringe on ABBA's copyright
Really loved the newest album! I love the WW I songs. Race To The Sea, Stormtroopers, Unkillable Soldier, and Christmas Truce I think are the best songs on the album.

This is my current favorite from the album, followed very closely by Lady of the Dark and Christmas Truce. Been looking forward to this episode since the day the album was released. Thank you for all the work you guys/gals put into this series. It reignited my love of Sabaton when I found out about it around episode 60. Edit: correcting a song title.

Awesome to watch. Love what Joakim said about the good discovery Channel and the history Channel. I appreciate you guys being so open to teaching so much history about so many countries wars and heros and so on, because that in my view really is amazing, not to include how incredible trying to write songs in general is tough but you also are telling stories and writing them about history on top. Yall should receive some sort of award for doing what you do to teach in the music that yall write becauee I feel honored to have heard of yall for the first time last year and have been listening to sabaton non stopped ever since as well as watching indie do history lessons every single chance I get. Indy ranting about the "History" channel is something I would love to see
I think "race to the sea" is one of the great tongue-in-cheek/mocking names for anything in history. Ranks up there with things 'big bang' theory, which was originally meant as an insult from the steady state theory supporters. Or phoney war (I like sitzkrieg personally) for the 6 months after the invasion of Poland.
It both describes the overall change in movement after the failure to capture Paris. And imo, might be mocking the commanders of both armies by saying that they were more interested in having a race to the beach, than trying to wage war. (I am the very model of a modern major general....)
Sure, it does not do a great job of telling history as a series of facts..... but it does a great job capturing a glance into the past at the same time.

This has always been one of those interesting what ifs to explore. Schlieffin doesn’t develop his plan to invade France through Belgium. Instead the German General Staff before WW1 develops a plan to make Alsace-Lorraine into a defensive wall with plans to hold the French there first with contingencies if the French go through Belgium so while French forces are bottlenecked into the only place they can go without risking British wrath over Belgium and the Germans throw everything at the Russians because the Russians are bigger but more disorganized and logistically backwards and the Germans studied how the Japanese beat the Russians with speed and maneuvering. And then after beating the Russians, they turn back onto the French. And all the while Germany never holds back their navy and instead uses that against France and Russia as well
Well the entire reason why they switched to the Schlieffen plan was the fact that defeating russia is a massive effort. THe japanease got it rather easy because russia couldnt supply that many troops in the far east and it was a war primarily decided in naval battle apart from a few (for the time giant) land battles.
European russia was another problem altogether because, as Napoleon found out, its infrastructure sucked, there were millions of angry people there and the land is so huge your armies get streched thin easily.
The switch to quickly defeat France was designed to exactly deal with the Russia problem. France had good infrastructure, germany still had accurate maps and plans of the country from the last war and the occupation period and most importantly germany had local supßeriority in menpower and arms to the french if they concentrated their main effort here. Against russia you will never gain a meaningful superiority that can decide the war while against France one battle, one breakthrough could easily decide the war. Additionally the Schlieffen plan had the benefit of immediatly knocking out french industry to a massive degree because their heavy industry was primarily in the north east of the country, the area germany would basically keep throughout the war.
The problem with the Schlieffen plan wasnt its basic design but the fact there was no plan what to do if there were problems or if it didnt lead to french surrender. there wasno continengcy.
A war as planned before the Schlieffen plan would have resulted in germany just starving to death long term. THe High seas fleet might dominate the french fleet in the north sea, but it cant leave it do to its supply lines. The french could still basically blockade germany by raiding in the atlantic do to germany not having the logistical reach to contest that. Nobody would go through the channel eather because every land based gun would blow the high seas fleet to pieces. And France with its full industry available and its colonial empire woulod be much stronger then in our timeline. A smaller front would actually be to Frances advantage, even if it is fighting in the mountains and hills of Elsass-Lorraine.

Great episode! However, I noticed that the maps depicted the South of The Netherlands as being part of the German occupied territory (colored reddish). The Netherlands was neutral and not occupied or part of the alliance which included the Germans. Though there were some violations of the Dutch neutrality, it was mostly respected throughout the war :-)

The Ukranian rivers are really wide to begin with. The Don and the Dnieper drain Russia from the sea on the north all the way to the Black Sea. The vikings used them to trade with the middle east.
so if the Ukrainians manage to seize the crimean channel and opened the river. Some changes may occur that could benefit them in hypothetical questions

I know this might end up on deaf ears but I wanted to take a shot in the dark here by contacting through what i hope will reach the band Sabaton or at least one of the bandmembers. Currently we are at Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium with my girlfriend charlottes only reason to join me,which is Sabaton. When she saw there was a signing she was so excited she scratched her plans to see any pther band and stand in line for the signing. As she was over halfway and i was watching a few bands in the meantime I started to feel light in the head due to the recent heatwave that is going over the country and i started to feel like i could pass out at any time.
She went out of the line to help me and place me somewhere in the shade so i would be okay but sacrificed her spot to meet her metalheroes. She has been religiously viewing both this channel and the sabaton channel almost daily. She always plays sabaton or the history channel on youtube while she is at home... Sabaton is the reason she fell in love with metal.
I know I might just be one of the comments thzt will be forgotten in a heartbeat but i wanted to ask if Joakim or any of the bandmembers would have the time and heart to send her a personal message?

This is my current favorite from the album, followed very closely by Lady of the Dark and Christmas Truce. Been looking forward to this episode since the day the album was released. Thank you for all the work you guys/gals put into this series. It reignited my love of Sabaton when I found out about it around episode 60.
