    I don't know if I've ever seen any filmmaker explain action filmmaking as easily and as accessibly as Donnie Yen does in his demonstrations/interviews. He's ridiculously good at communicating and explaining his process.

      Comparing ip man, bruce lee, and donnie yen is comparing long bow, cross bow, and musket. Donnie yen is more modern in style, and bigger in physics than bruce lee, as well as bruce lee when compared to ip man
      But in box office, bruce lee has the most influence nevertheless...

    Both Jackie and Jet paved way for hong kong cinema to reach wider audience. They did alot more than anyone can ever imagine. Jackies movies from the 80s and 90s has amazing fight scenes that are still way above any hollywood crap. 20 years ago almost I knew that not only hollywood but everyone could learn alot from hong kong cinema. They dont as donnie said make a scene into fragments in hong kong. They actually have like 1/10 of the cuts they have in hollywood and much of that is because of their skill with martial arts aswell as their passion for what they do. Many of them put in their entire life into making movies. They know action because they love it. Their way of doing action is being used all over the world but I have never ever seen a good martial arts movie without a chinese guy showing up in it. Even yuen wo ping made the fights in the matrix movies.

    • @realdealmind01
      @realdealmind01 8 років тому +4

      +Golden Arts You only give credit to these two actors for singlehandedly paving way for HONG KONG CINEMA to reach wider audience as a whole? Wow, you outta do thorough research on that. King Hu, Chang Cheh, Lau Kar Leung, Bruce Lee, Yuen Woo Ping, Corey Yuen, Tsui Hark, John Woo, Ringo Lam, Johnnie To, Sammo Hung, Wong Jing, Wong Kar Wai etc. There's too many names to mention here. Anyway, Hong Kong Cinema was shaped the way it is due to a network of talents.

    • @GoldenArtsOnline
      @GoldenArtsOnline 8 років тому +2

      Ye I agree I might have given them to much credit. Sammo Hung and Yuen wo ping did both do alot of good stuff for the HK Cinema. John Woo im not so sure about. Im talking about who actually made chinese movies bring in more money due to the fact that its more known world wide now. And Jackie Chan is probably the biggest reason for that.

    He has a point. Hollywood action films have some of the most garbage fight scenes because Hollywood action directors don't know how to shoot these scenes and try to edit it all with shitty camera shaking and multiple cuts. Take the Hunger Games and Red Dawn for example. Awful, awful fight scenes where you can't even tell what's going on

    • @yaminahjackson2595
      @yaminahjackson2595 8 років тому +10

      great example of good American fight scenes, Taken...Baaaddd example is Taken 2. Horribly close up. All fragmented. But these movie fight scens show everything. Perfect camera angles and views

    • @patwong9956
      @patwong9956 8 років тому +17

      +JD Frank They have to edit like that because all the actors don't know how to fight. If they show a wide shot of 2 hollywood actors fighting you'll notice their bad form, slow and weak movement. The whole scene will look even worse.

    • @AznSupaStar14
      @AznSupaStar14 8 років тому +9

    mr yen raised a very good point, many times, the producers or the cinematographer outside hong kong normally don't have a very strong sense for action scenes, they thought multiple camera is all an action scene needs to make sure that the action is nice.sometimes, the action director have a better idea of where to place the camera for an action scene to make sure that the action are nicely captured.
    This short segment not only tells me the importance of a cinematographer, but also how important action directors are compared to what other people thought it might be the case.
    Coming from an aspiring cinematographer.

    • @antwango
      @antwango 9 років тому +2

      This issue has been raised many times before. It seems its the departmentalised nature of film making, where in the west filmmaking is clearly seperated into the directing and the editing and the story telling, and after its all been captured by the director and the actors, its stitched together by the editor, who maybe doesnt understand the true vision of the story teller or director.
      In HK as far as i can tell, if your making an action film, the action director can overide the shots or maybe suggest shots or take over from the directing duties for a segment of the movie. The roles of who does what in filmmaking is not so clearly delineated. In fact the action director may even also edit the film. The balance has to be there, of course not all HK action movies are good stories or movies. A few of donnies recent movies have been below SPL or Flashpoint. Maybe he should stick to playing a rogue cop? Im not a student of film but i know a good movie or good storytelling.
      Also this may also explain why Prometheus turned out in my opinion to be way below expectations... Ridley Scott, Alien origin and lore expanding movie, should be a no brainer.... yet really disappointing in terms of story telling. Key elements of that movie just grate and annoy me. And can all that blame be laid at Ridley Scotts door? Did he watch it before hand and think that it all made sense, and put his approval on it? who knows.
      Guy who looked like the dude who played Bane cant remember his name right now, was my Jar Jar Binks, as was the 2 female leads running along the projected fall path of alien ship, as was the 2 comic "scientists/experts" who get lost... sorry im digressing... that example just popped into my head...
      As your an aspiring cinematographer. I dont know if your aware of the youtube channel Every Frame A Painting? Amazing channel and work! Go there, theres a video that highlights the points being discussed, with Jackie Chan. All that channels videos are good tutorials! I love it and im just a lover of good movies

    • @clock02
      @clock02 9 років тому +1

      yeah, i am aware of that channel and i love every video of it.
      Yeah, like you said, separate each department to take part of different jobs does make the logistic part of the filming easier, but it also limits each talent from each crew members.
      I think it is not just the Hollywood, but also many part of the world.

    • @jerry171460
      @jerry171460 9 років тому +1

      Not just nicely capture! It also shows the expressions of actors and expression of movements (fighting techniques). Bruce Lee was good at that . He used camera angles to show his techniques and super quickness that he didn't have. He was fast but his movies showed he was even faster. Please take a look at Enter the Dragon, when he did the "slap hand" with Bob Wall. The camera was placed behind Bob's back for a reason!!!
      Another pointer I want to give out is let's say Bruce and Bob Wall could run 50 yards at the same speed, they could reach the finish line at the same time. Then how could Bruce Lee show he could run faster than Bob Wall if they started the race at the same time? How?.....Bruce told Bob Wall to slow down and Bruce himself ran at the same speed. How could Bruce hit Bob first with his spinning heel kick when Bob was about to kick Bruce with front kick in Enter the Dragon? Bob Wall was told to slow down his front kick! When we look at the distances both kicks had to travel to hit the target, we knew the shortest distance between two points is a straight line; in other words, the front kick should hit the target first!

    • @RenyxGhoul

      jerry Last so Bruce is not as fast or as skilful as we know him to be? Slowing down your opponents attacks so that you can perform a move?

      +Ali Sakr you may think that because of the style of action movies they do.. but note that it's only in movies.. while jackie prefers more comic, donnie makes it look brutal and serious.. but that does not define their martial arts..
      Jackie prefers to show his character weak.. at first.. making obstacles come his way, taking loads of beatings, a handicap match and what not.. and making him overcome out of all the weakness and still win the battle.. that's why some people think he's not a good fighter.. but that's the beauty of his fights.. making it relatable to everyone.. while donnie is a good fighter/choreographer.. his fights will make you go.. nah.. only donnie can do this..

When I watch Jackie's movie, all I see are stunts and tricks. When I watch Donnie or Sammo it's martial arts plus real action.

    I like how he can translate so efficiently from Cantonese to Japanese. Also allows me to understand that Japanese uses a lot more English words with a Japanese accent to it whereas Cantonese (a version of Mandarin) just says it in its own native way. E.g. Camera - Japanese says カメラ but 摄影机 in Mandarin. Which is actually Camcorder

    We need more Hong Kong-style action directing (AKA choreographers who actually give a shit) in American films.

    • @realdealmind01
      @realdealmind01 8 років тому +4

      +Max D. That happened 15 years ago starting with Yuen Woo Ping's work on the Matrix movies

      ***** But then it disappeared. Yes, we have movies with really good fight choreography here and there, but I still see way too much shaky cam in American action films.

    • @Gatz22
      @Gatz22 8 років тому +6

      +Max D. Agreed shaky cam is a disease I'm sorry to say they used that too much especially in Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum but when they showed what it was like without it it looked much better.
      Look what they did with Matrix movies Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and Laurence Fishburne were taught by Yuen Woo-Ping and his team and they didn't need to use shitty shaky cam.
      And Donnie is right for action scenes give that role to the ACTION director.

      the thing is they're already a lot of good choreographers available but as long as they use shaky cam and horrible editing it will never look good

      PyRo Solid hahahaha you're hilarious dude can't tell if you're joking. Ip Man taught Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen portraying Ip Man does not make him Ip Man sorry. Bruce Lee died in 1973 (age 32) and Donnie Yen was born in 1963 (age 10). So you're saying Donnie Yen taught Bruce Lee kungfu when he wasn't even born yet?

    Everything he's saying is so damn true. we in the US cant make a good fight scene for shit unless its all CG computerized like in transformers or avatar (but thats not even martial arts). I couldn't stand the shaky camera fight scenes in the bourne movies, out of the whole trilogy i might have enjoyed one or two fight scenes but overall i wasn't too impressed, just a good storyline there.

    Just a quick recap of Donnie's background:
    His parents were both martial artists and MUSICIANS. so Donnie is not only a kung fu expert, he's also a outstanding pianist :)
    He received intensive training when he was young. even when he moved to the United States he didn't stop his training.
    Everyone should be grateful to his dedication to kung fu and action movie or we would otherwise have no opportunities to watch such great movies

    as much as Hollywood directors don't want to admit. they DO have to learn from Hong Kong films for martial art and action movies. Hollywood moVies have good editing but lack the impact that an action movie should have. they rely on explosion and collateral damages too much to create tension.
