Speaking as both a drone pilot and a professional pyrotechnician / BPA trainer, Please don’t fly near fireworks displays, especially if you have not sought permission, as the presence of a drone will cause issues such as the organisers feeling they can’t go ahead with the display for safety. Professional Category 4 materials are significant devices with , for example 3”/75mm shells going 3-400 foot up in the air and the effects spreading out over a similar radius, then there’s the effect of the wind which can take debris even further down range. Since these shells leave the mortars doing around 200mph, and then have a burst charge to produce their effects at height, with some effects then having additional explosive charges as part of the effect, a drone doesn’t stand much of a chance if it’s in the wrong place! (And 3 inch are some of the smaller shells, others will be well above the drone ceiling and spread over a radius of several hundred metres)
@@IaninLondon yes, and worth bearing in mind that you can often get a better view from further back than right at the front, for a display. Obviously the torch parades are a different kettle of fish!
Welcome to Sussex east or west both great places to live. I am new to drone flying at the age of 69 just purchased my first second hand mavic air and loving the experience started working my way through some of your back posts lots to learn so should keep me occupied 😊 maybe see you on the downs some day please keep the posts coming
Thanks for this Ian. And yes now the longer nights are here I intend to do some more flying at night. I agree and anticipated all the things you said, including a preparation in daytime to see where any obstacles, wires, or tall buildings are and fly away from crowds and fireworks, looking at them from a point of safety. The daytime reconnaissance would be to find the highest obstacle around the flight path and add maybe 20 m on top of that and never go any lower than this. Also, a point to note, I understand is that the obstacle avoidance sensors do not work in the dark . I have an extra strobe on my mini 3 pro which way is only a couple of grams, and having weighed the drone on its own it was 246 g and with the strobe just 249 g, so all below 250g. Last year, my video of Nuneaton's fireworks was one of my most popular videos.
Thanks for the flight information. Enjoyed the video clips. Have fun in your new location. With cold weather around the corner I will still be flying, but will spend more time with Norton Anthology of English Literature and Shakespeare, The Complete Works. Cheers from Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Long Man of Wilmington! Love it. Very close to my old haunting ground as a kid staying at my Gran's. If it's still there, The Cricketers pub nearby had the best pint of Harveys Best in the area. It's close enough to the brewery at Lewes to be cask fed. Absolutely lovely!
Nice Aerial Shot Of The Long Man Of Wilmington, South Coastal Areas Can Be Windy At Times, But When Calm Days Appear Pure Joy To Fly Drone, Good Area To Walk Dogs Too. Like Flying In The Winter Months More Deserted Areas To Fly, Without The Wind Of Course.
Sadly my two dogs absolutely hate fireworks and as a sud so do I now. Now Ian that's a botanical garden, so Ian must like playing with greenery? So am guessing your main work is landscaping or you want a part with MontY Don?😂
Looking grand Ian!! Remember, remember, the 5th of November: and all that stuff! Grand to see you're settling in! Just want to add, cheers mate & Egészségedre!
Fantastic to see you back again Ian, looks lovely where you are now and I can't wait to see your adventures. Thanks for the awesome info, and wishing you well.
Hi i have a question about the mini 3 pro that i cant not for the life of me find online. basically i was taking pictures/videos of some fireworks last night . when i realised after about 10 mins or so i couldn't see my drone in the sky, the green lights had gone out and i was flying blind. i crapped myself and thankfully return to home worked fine. but i had this overwhelming sense of anxiety i dont want to repeat. on my way home i tried again with doing a time-lapse of the moon/cloud cover with fresh battery. and once again after several mins of capturing photos for its hyperlapse. they went out again. its really strange as ive had this drone since june and sware it wasn't like this before hand. i defo would i noticed and ive had no issues before last night. ( i did updated firmware the day before) is this a malfunction? something to do with the update? i see articles from around a year ago saying they turn off during recording but even then. like i said ive had 0 issues until last night. its making me not want to use it again at night. a comment on reddit said there is a setting to change but i cant see anything anywhere. can anybody with more experience help me please? thank you in advance
Very timely upload. I'm hoping to fly from a rural footpath away from any displays or private gardens and clear of overhead obstructions, but with a hopefully clear view across the village. Fingers crossed for a good view.
@@IaninLondon Have you spent any time in Lewes Ian? They are a bit of a strange breed, even for Sussex, it’s 8 miles from Brighton, and about 200 years.
@@IaninLondonPart of the reason for Lewes being the big one is the burning of the Protestant Martyrs in the town, Lewes is the epicentre of Protestantism in England.
New back garden looks great mate!! Sorry didn’t reply to you on your last video. Hopefully the move went relatively smoothly. Yet again, great video really enjoyed it, looking forward to your upcoming videos from your new location. Enjoy Bonfire night it’s my favourite night for sure. 👍🏻
Lovely to see that smile upon your face Ian. Very good clear advice thanks. Sadly I am not allowed to night fly here on the east coast of Oz (Australia), well not without full commercial license etc.
I was thinking of filming our local fireworks display if it isnt raining but keeping well back and using my air 3 zoom lens. Would you suggest leaving it on auto camera settings or night mode?
Can you tell me if your Mini 4 Pro YAW drifts at night when hovering? A hyperlapse shows this up quite badly. I've returned my M4P for a refund because of this issue and I'm staying with my Mini 3 Pro which does Not drift at night. Look forward to hearing your comments
@@IaninLondon If you could that would be great thanks. DJI support have said that the night drifting is due to the vision sensors being disabled but my Mini 3 Pro doesn't drift at night and DJI's response was that the Mini 4 is not comparable to the Mini 3 which really surprised me.
Well done mate 😊 very informative, love seeing the Long Man of Wilmington. Were you at Hailsham over the weekend for their Bonfire procession?!?! You have a lovely looking garden. Great to see you back. 👍🏻👌🙌
Question Ian about general night flying. (don't think I'm going to bother filming fireworks tbh!) The mini 2 has the standard light underneath but I'm guessing its not particularly brilliant light. Are there any alternatives/additional lights that you could attach that would be CAA approved?
On my mini 2 I used 2 of the Strobon Cree standalone lights. They are very lightweight and very powerful and still kept under 250g. You can attach them with sticky pads but I devised a wayto attach to the back arms using a length of thin plastic packing strapping. This can slide between the vinyl skin of the light and each end can be fastened to the arms using very small cable ties. They are then removable by sliding the packing tape out again!
Welcome to your new house Ian - great to see you back again! I’m pretty sure OA kinda stops even just with low light (see recent real world test vid ff towards about 5 mins to the end) obvs won’t put link in but sure you’ll be able to find it 😊

Back again after a crazy few weeks moving South. And getting to grips with just how seriously they take Bonfire Night down in Sussex....
We have Bonfire "season" Ian, not just a night! October to December. Rye's and Hastings are the best in my opinion as Lewes is only for locals.
Brilliant info matey. I did drop you a Txt last week hoping your move went well. Looks like it has gone well. 👍👍
Hey Rich; yeah, sorry, busy few weeks! All good cheers.....

Excellent A Good Wind Tester This Winter, If It Ever Stops Ranining
Apologies if I missed you say this, but maybe don't fly downwind of any firework display you are trying to film!
