    Can income from my holding company’s subsidiary count as income from for my holding company if my holding company creates and contributes to a solo 401(k)?
    If not, would u recommend that the holding company charges a management fee every month to count that as “income” for contributions?

    After watching this, I feel a bit duped into getting a Roth Solo 401k. I don't have any income coming in from my small business, it's a small little thing I wanted to do with my kids. So, it almost seems like I cannot contribute to this with my W-2 money. Very confused on where I went wrong on this. I am using it for private money lending, that was pretty easy. But, I don't understand how to leverage this account to help with retirement and/or tax benefits.

    Can you show me the IRS rule that says a part time under 500 hours a year employee doesn’t count as a employee for a solo 401k. That is definitely the rule for a traditional 401k that an employee under 500 hours for 3 years or the 1 year rule of 1000 hours is not eligible. Key phrase not eligible. It’s still an employee. Can you show me the IRS literature that supports this rule for a solo. I see bloggers writing about this, however I don’t see IRS literature supporting this.😮

    when you're talking about grossing it up for FICA, does that mean maximums are based on net payroll, not gross? what if you make less than the maxes? like say you only make $10,000 on w2 payroll...is your total max contribution from employee and employer $12,500? or can it only be $10,000 since that's all you made? or is it something else because you have to take out your FICA first and make contributions based off of net payroll income?

    Can solo 401K contributions come 100% from the employer to avoid FICA? For example, if wages are $100K, can the employer contribute $25K with $0 employee elective deferral? Or does the employee have to contribute?

    How do you setup a self directed 401k to rollover from a previous employer's 401k if you dont have a self employed business?
    I understand if you dont have a self employed business then you cant make contributions, but if you are changing jobs instead of rolling to the new employer's 401k can you rollover a previous employer's 401k to a self directed 401k?
    If no then what's the bare minimum you would have to do to maintain the solo 401k? Like do a little work for one of these gig economy apps once a week, like deliver for Uber/Doordash once a week?

      Any side business qualifies as self-employment and there is no minimum revenue or income requirements. You could sell $100 of lemonade next weekend and that would qualifiy. From an implementation point of view, you don't even need to have sold any lemonade to open your Solo 401k. Just list yourself as a sole proprietorship (your name is business name) and create your plan documents. Once you have the documents, open a bank checking account in the name of your Solo 401k trust. This is part that is a bit of a pain, since the big banks like Bank of America don't let you setup accounts for trusts. Next, you can roll your old 401k's or IRAs into your Solo 401k if rolling cash. If you want to rollover stocks or mutual funds instead of cash, you'll need to open a brokerage account in the name of your Solo 401k's trust. I did this at Interactive brokers which was very easy as they have a trust setup option when opening an account. Some of my friends and myself opened Solo 401k's with very small businesses for the purpose of rolling retirement assets into the structure. A huge advantage of Solo 401ks is that they allow for very large contributions, but I didn't set mine up for that. I set up mine because you pay zero fees for the Solo 401k AND having self-directed investments was important to me.

    Can't tell If I qualify and by how much. I Left employment early this year, having already maxed out FICA tax, contributed $25,700 to 401k. Wife's LLC #1 has FT employees, no retirement plan, can't do SEP IRA for her this year, as we did last 2 years. LLC#1 Income ~200k net. Wife has biz #2, solo, Maybe 100k net (before pay me) but does not have enough income in #2 to max a SEP contrib. Wife pays me consulting fee out of her solo LLC, #2 to my LLC(#3,solo), (Prepping LLC #1 for sale, so family employees, kids, shifting to LLC#2 for more accurate income statements)
    I can probably do a SEP based on LLC#3, up to ??? limit. I know we should income shift as much as possible to me to reduce her FICA, but what should I do for her retirement funds this year, and assuming I'll continue building her biz as a consultant, next year? (I already know I should be doing S Corp election filing, but my current accountant was too slow to get it done)

    Is a solo 401K the same thing as a self directed 401K? Like the words are used interchangeably and there is no difference between them?

    • @retirementOwl
      @retirementOwl Рік тому

      Not really, most Solo 401k's are self-directed although some are not. For me, the benefits of a truly self-directed plan is that I can invest in anything I want and I don't need anyone else to approve my investment choice. You can open a Solo 401k through a broker like Fidelty or Schwab and take full advantage of the high contribution limits that Solo 401k's allow. The big problem is that your investment options will be limited to investments offered by the broker. If you want to invest in real estate like buying a rental property or being a limited partner in a larger real estate investment trust, you cannot do that through a broker's Solo 401k plan. I've had friends make this mistake. With a Fidelity Solo 401k, Fideltiy is the plan custodian. With a truly self-directed Solo 401k, you are the plan's custodian.

      You can absolutely have a business with a Solo 401k if you also have a W2 employment. Remember though, your annual contribution limits would apply to the combination of employemnt 401k and Solo 401k.

    Can we fund Solo 401k from a full time employment (at least partially)? Is it a Good idea to transfer 401k funds from old employer to a solo 401k?

    • @retirementOwl
      @retirementOwl Рік тому

      Transferring funds from a former empoyer 401k to a Solo 401k will 1) let you avoid the fees associated with the old plan and 2) Give you a much larger set of investment options than offered through employer plans.

    I opened this video to refresh my memory about the solo 401k. 20 min in and I still don't understand what a solo 401k is...
    You should start with a general five minute explanation for dummies about your topic and dive into a more detailed explanation. The guy on the left tends to start from the middle of the topic and keeps opening windows of new topics without closing the previous ones. He needs to work with a speaker coach to teach him story telling.
