What a strange confusing piece. Genuinely beautiful in places, sparkling and witty. And then moments of real shmultzy music that sounds like it's streaight out of a Hallmark romantic movie from the early 1990s. But still enjoyable...

Last week Trifonov was supposed to play it at the BBC Proms in London, but it was cancelled as he is the only person who knows it and apparently couldn't get a visa to enter the UK.
Let's forget the politics and ask why no other pianist has bothered to learn this fabulous work since it was premiered in January 2022. Plenty of time I'd say. No, these pianists just want to continue to take our money for playing works they have played, and we have heard, hundreds of times. Utterly disgraceful.
Can You tell me please why Daniil Trifonov did Not get a Visa? And why He should need it ? He is living , and having his Family in New York .

Yesterday I attended the Spanish premiere with the Orquesta Nacional de España, Heras-Casado and Trifonov. I believe it was the best premiere I have attended ever, the work is simply amazing, it touched me deep inside, I was really moved. I found the first movement especially emotive.
And I would say the rest of the Auditorium agreed with me, after the end people showed clearly they had enjoyed it, something quite unusual for a work premiered earlier this year. Even if Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was performed afterwards, this was the most applauded work in the matinee by far.
Thanks to the composer, Trifonov, the OCNE and Heras-Casado for such a especial event. I would have attended all three performances for this piece alone.

It won't become a repertoire staple unless trump types take ver theconcert hall . Easl Listening for peeps that don't value honesty or contemporary sensation . Barber nor Menotti was ever this corny,washed out ,facile and throw back .;there is taste in places but not enough to save it. I predict he will be at least 80 before he reaches a finer idea of what can happen in music !

Trifonov riesce a rendere accettabile anche una partitura molto modesta, che sicuramente acquista lustro grazie al talento russo.
Spero che almeno l'abbiano pagato bene.
Per me, musica da film. Priva di profondità e di qualsiasi spessore emotivo. Rispecchia la povertà culturale dell'ambiente che lo ha prodotto.

honestly, it's nothing crazy. Third movement kinda resemble Stravinsky Firebird's Dance of the Roi Kastchei, and apart from that it would definetly fit a movie soundtrack, but has not the depth and the theme structuration of a Concerto. Not even considering that this harmony it's amusing to hear, but probably a little bit boring in these days.
Another composer who pretends that the 20th and the early part of the 21st century never existed. Our species lives in constant denial of reality. It breaks my heart. Music for people who don’t like music.
It's most certainly is not. There may be more truly great composers now, then at any time in history. (Check the Wergo and Kairos labels.) Bates seems to be a composer that orchestras are comfortable with: orchestras who would rather play nothing of contemporary music, but can accept (and feel their musically-ignorant audience can tolerate). @@jm960

@@hugomirandamusic because it is easy listening. But the thing people really lost was the sense of logic in music, at its most pronounced in J F Haydn. Even Scriabin just makes sonatas by joining motives together and changing the key.😊
Let's see: here are some 20th and 21st century-composers who compose music you believe to be in denial of reality: Samuel Barber, John Adams, Mason Bates, Nico Muhly, William Bolcom, Jennifer Higdon, Gorecki, Arvo Pårt...the list goes on and on. I'm sorry your heart is broken, but you are wrong when you say this is "music for people who don't like music." You really mean, "music for people who don't like the music I like."
@@composerguy100 barber is an example of someone whose music is bad not because it's not atonal but because it's meretricious. And that goes for some others too, like gorecki and part.
If Rautavarra had been American and more desperate to be liked This is what he would have sounded like the jazz statements with wind flurries is supreme bad taste .The 2nd mov is scarely any better and the finale is just gross ,cheap, easy please the knownothing s,not feel anything/ no depth crowd ! Each subject each movement childish ,speaking not purely (though Trifonov instills it with honesty and heart).He makes it better than it is the conductor can't help with all the bithdaycake bursts . A lot of young American composers will thing Hallmark card music is legitimate : naively just have your happy career and be forgotten .
Full of brightness and a type of Light but it feels immature and as if it's trying to please3rd mov. shows how unremarkable and ordinary allthis .Ligeti rhythms this ain't perhaps Africanus Light I'll call it -though I won't be listening again.I'm really against over commercialism-but the guy wants r has a record contract so he fits in gawd bless him.He grew up in the country so maybe he is being honest Hanson ain't here nor is Sessions more like Havhaness which I can't stand -maybe when I'm older and don't want musc to bother me.Pleasing !!!Yukk- THE ONLY SIN I KNOW!!!...Wow Dika Newlin one of the teachers of Bates studied with Schonberg at end oF his life and she was also a punk singer and now we have middle of theroad Bates. It doesn't have to be Ustvolskaya or ugly but it Should Be Now and include the ugliness of NOW! tHE 3RD MOVEMENT SOUNDS LIKE TENTHOUSANDother young American composers so It will Be Forgotten .Thankgod for Tia Leon,Higdon and maybe MissyMazzoliSo I won't accept this and it justdoesn't interest ME.9 minute long 1st movement in a regular sized piece Is Short &was a welcomesurprise to lead into the 2nd mov.which felt like it was about something not new just honest..2nd movement still too comforting but more interesting than the 1st mov.not Jonathan Harvey but communicative and Simple .This could play on any easllistening channel -immature to my mind. So good to hear Trifonov in something contemporary -but I don't agree with this choice ;it certainly won't offend anyone (I can't believe that's all he wanted after his highly emotional and depth in Schumann and others .This is a letdown for me & sadly it's the most ordinary ,forgettable experience one can imagine .What is it saying "? The 2nd mov. has so much more realness but we've still heard these kind of ruminations too often and almost everywhere else . How did Bates become supported and who did he study with I'll have to find out. Expression is artefact and an expression of political/economic relations as Andriessen told us long ago . This feels like attractive ,mindless furniture in a livingroom or even music one would hear after a Disney movie as one walks out during the credits .Matthias Pintscher could teach Bates a thing or two about brass .I won't be looking for any other Bate's music . I wonder if he has tried his hand at Boulez or Messiaen ?I'm sure he hasa curious mind . Bates is an easy listen unlike most serious composers now writing : no new ideas or uncomfortable ideas hear ;sounds like radio jazz . Not my kinda thing . Wuorinen's first piano concerto anyone or Bolcolm's lovely American masterpiece ? Where is Higdon's piano concerto the violin got alleys and ears attention unlike Wynton Marsalis truly great violin concerto but dat will change !
