When configuring a switch for VLAN always remember to configure the downstream AND upstream ports! Lot's of strangeness if you configure only 1, believe me I know...
I don't usually post in comments anywhere but I really enjoyed Wendells time from Tek Syndicate. My Current PFSense setup - i5-3470 - 16GB RAM - 128GB SSD - 2 Dual Port Intel NIC's WAN setup with PPPoE and a static IP. I have a fiber connection to the house with 250Mbps Down and 100Mbps - Download speeds improved dramatically and I can download games and play or have multiple streams going and still playing games and there is not a single issue with the connection. The plugins are a must especially Snort, Web Caching and the Proxy services available. I then use a Asus AC router in AP mode for Wireless in the house. I will never move away from this sort of setup. Fast and provides a never ending learning pool. Thanks very much for continuing to put this sort of content out there, if not for folks like you I would never learn anything new. :-)
I think you did a great job explaining pfSense compared to other channels. It wasn't overly technical but not overly general. Encourages learning I think.
I love pfSense, I had used ClearOS (aka ClarkConnect) since 2004 till this year. pfSense is so easy to use and does everything I need. My setup is quite simple, cable modem, pfSense system, unmanaged switch and a wireless router. The modem, switch and wireless router are all setup in some sort of "dumb" mode, the unmanaged switch has no settings at all, the wireless router is set to access point, and the modem has no settings. Everything is controlled by pfSense, port forwarding, DHCP, firewall, content filter... everything for your network in one place. My favorite feature, IP address by MAC, I didn't list your MAC then you get no IP. I live in a townhome and when my ClearOS machine was list an IP with an unknown MAC I ended switching to psSense. Yes, ClearOS can do that, but ClearOS uses command line for more technical setups, pfSense is way easier.
I work at Sears Auto Center... It's time for a new career. I always wanted to do IT but I never went to school due to my jobs being "good enough"... thanks Wendell, for the inspiration.
NLuKa420 I did IT and now I drive a trailer truck. There's less bullshit and corporate nonsense to deal with. I would recommend either career, but each person's experiences will vary.
Self taught all the way. It's slow going but rewarding. If you can accellerate with courses, do it. My next self taught project is setting up a Cisco 79xx VoIP LAN to work with my ISP.
made a pfsense for my 1/1 Gbps connection. been running it for several months with no reboots, still hitting over 900mbps both ways. best decision ever.
Pfsense is the best! Added an Ubiquiti access point to it. Now I can throttle my kids bandwidth and shut him down before bedtime (on school nights). I purchased an optiplex off of ebay for $100. Its way overkill but very easy to upgrade if needed. These are the videos I have missed! Time to do an advanced setup video on pfsense! hint hint...
This is Awesome! It could very well be one of my projects I do over the uni break. Nice quality video by the way. Whoever is organising the filming obviously knows what they're doing. Good lighting, nice shots, DOF looks great. Well done.
I've used pfsense for a year now... rock solid stability... only times I've actually needed to reboot the firewall is when there is updates. for those who wish to play around with pfsense make sure you have quite a decent amount of cpu power to play with. I am running a Athlon x4 5350 and it works great with 200Mb internet and 7 packages running. I highly recommend ntopng.
I seriously can't thank you guys enough. My pfSense router has been great, and I wouldn't even know pfSense existed if it weren't for you guys. Thank you.
cspeakz Snort is an awesome tool. One thing I did do is initially leave the auto block feature off to monitor my alerts. Once I had some of the persistent ones sorted, I turned auto block on. But I'm sure there are things I'm missing, so it'll be nice for him to share some of his experiences.
+1 for upcoming VLAN video! I've been running pfsense for a few years now and last year picked up a managed switch to experiment with VLANs, but I'm still lost as to how to set them up correctly.
The little chuckles through the video are the best part. ^_^ I love you Wendell. Thank you for sticking to making videos and wading through all the bullshit. Stay strong.
AdanD66174U.2 Logan did make a pfSense video a while back and installed it in a GX280 or something. That and other nerdy game stuff is what TS was supposed to be.
+K Doe Yeah but they also hinted at and sometimes promised follow-up videos, which never came to fruition, so I'm kinda thinking Logan maybe had something to do with shooting those ideas down.
This is the channel that many people, myself included have been wating for! Can finally learn how to do stuff like this rather than just seeing the final result!
Liking every video you post so hopefully more people will come to you! Can you do a video on connecting two wireless APs and do node balancing and wireless handoff between them? I can't quite figure out how to do it myself.
This will need to be supported by the ap. If you get something like unfi ap's they have their own software that is set up to do this, it will run independently of pfsense.
Athos Count de la Fère I get that part, I was hoping for a DIY solution, such as flashing the firmware of a router and writing some code to control them.
One of the first videos released when you went on ur own, and you are allready punping out high quality content. This is a clear sign that you are going werry much in the right direction! Job well done!!! Hope to se much more of this type of content.
For my home setup I have Pfsense running as a VM with a dedicated WAN NIC on a ESXI server connected to my ISP modem. Virtualization of pfSense is fun too! Just as stable as my old Pc pfsense build I use to use. BTW This is just like TEK but better. Wendell is here and it is all tek!!
Wendell - please set the shutter speed on your camera to 1/(frame rate * 2) or as close you can get - e.g. if shooting at 30fps use 1/60. It will make the video appear less "jerky" and more natural to the viewer. Otherwise, enjoying the content!
Just on time after I order all mi part for my new pfSense build. I literally order all my part yesterday on Newegg without knowing that this video it was to come up today. Perfect timing. Thank for the video Wendell.
Always loved the content Wendell puts out. I feel like you can improve the production value of the video if you pad the walls, try and get rid of that audio echo.
This was awesome mate, you turned me into pfsense couple of years ago its nice to see you coming back to it and finally doing a full setup video on it :) I see great vids coming ,keep it up !
oespo oespo19 it's not a waste of money at all . I never understand this when I see people saying it. apart from some of the course becoming less and less relevant , it's still one of the best foot in the door certs you can gain of you want to get in to networking. it all depends on you and how well you actually put yourself out there . there are lots of jobs .
Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Thank You, Wendell. Seriously, thank you for this. Been itching to get into PfSense and had a SFF 2500K collecting dust until I got the time to start. I wanted something more robust when re-designing the home and home office network. Please Please PLEASE continue these videos, especially on your favorite plug-ins.
FUCK YES! I took a old P4 computer that was being tossed out and now run it as a router. My store bought shit Linksys was so overtaxed by torrents that it would just give up and stop working until it was reset. I tried PFSense but HOLY SHIT the amount of things available to configure were insane. Now I run Untangle and it does what I need.
AeRiaL BTW, the machine didn't cost me a dime, it was headed for the dumpster. I threw four spare PCI NICS (Only use two at the moment), disconnected the CD-ROM and used the small PATA hard drive to hold the OS for boot and let it ride. It runs nice and quite in my office next to my file server now. BTW, it only has 1GB of ram but looking at the stats it only ever really uses 375MB at any given time.
Hmm, I have a Pentium 4 Socket 478 PC running XP Pro SP3 but only has 256MB SDRAM. I guess I could put in some PCI NICs and more RAM then it'll be fine to go after I put Pfsense on it? It only has 100mbit ethernet if that's an issue but my peak dl is like 2.1mb/s (whatever that converts to in mbits), so I believe that will be fast enough.
If you're going to build your own router by using pfSense, OPNsense or Sophos SG or XG... please use something like an Intel NUC or Zotac Zbox. They lack a dedicated PCIe expansion slot for a 2nd network card, but that can be added via USB. I have my Sophos firewall running on an old Zbox which draws 15W at max and idles at between 5 and 10W. An old Dell Optiplex will draw something like 30-40W just in idle. Not cool for something that's running 24/7/365. And they're big and bulky.
pfsense is a firewall application there is no modem involved in this build , you need 2 NICs in your "router"-pc / raspberryPi / SoC / whatever. and then it will just do one thing: filter packages the way you configure it. the modem is whatever you use now for connecting to your ISP. be it Cable or ADSL or sth else. network schematic wise the modem comes BEFORE the pfsense appliance. so between WAN interface of pfsense and your ISP. you do not need to change your modem nor do you need a specifically "decent" modem to implement a pfsense gateway in your network. if anything pfsense can help alleviate stress on even the shittiest modems through traffic normalization and shaping, and even through truncating unneeded packets.
the pf sense router video we deserve! not 3 20 minute videos of linus breaking things. easy and clear to follow, I know what my Lil junker pc is going to be doing soon!
Back when I had crappy ADSL, I used pfsense on an old Core 2 Duo machine with a few NICs to load balance two ADSL2 lines with failover... Was an absolutely rock-solid setup.
I was initially thinking of using www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157497&ignorebbr=1 then running it under a hypervisor so I can have both freenas (I know it's not the greatest but it'll work for what I want) and pfsense running at the same time, but I'm reconsidering it right now as I can find much more powerful hardware for cheaper on ebay at the expense of power consumption.
If I was doing something like that I would look for something like a Dell desktop like the one used in this video. Because in some cases you would be able to get an entire pc with reasonable power efficiency for the price of the motherboard you found
Yeah exactly my thoughts, seeing that a similarly specced dell desktop as in the video runs for about $120 on ebay I may just go with that, only issue is storage expandability but I can just attach a nas later on for that anyways
Andrew Sulistio i have seen the i3 version of the one in the video for down to 50$ some times and that would still kick the shit out of that mobo with built in cpu
Just gotta say Wendell, I am absolutely loving your content. Great to see you still making videos! Keep up the great work and I would LOVE to see more about pfSense, freeNAS, etc. Server stuff is awesome!
Really so very happy you're back with us. Just a small suggestion to get good mic and play around with compression as you have awesome speaking voice that would be ridiculously good with proper equipment/settings. Heck make a video out of it: How to Make Yourself Sound Like Howard Stern!
I would LOVE if in future videos you did things to make networking hardware and software tutorials for the casual PC person. I'm no enthusiast but I have an interest in being able to control my own network but trying to find information online can be difficult. Your networking and linux tutorials in the past have been very enlightening for me in the past and very accessible even with my limited networking and software knowledge base. Please continue pursuing creating this kind of content!!
I have been using pfsense for some time now and I really want more in depth content on the subject. I think that you guys are heading in the right direction.
An easy way to take the plunge is to install pfsense on a laptop you seldom use (You can install it along side Windows fairly easily if you know anything about disk partitioning), then just plugging a USB to Ethernet adapter to serve as your second interface. This is not the route (no pun intended) to go if you're looking for performance as USB simply isn't cut out for intense networking, but it works fabulously on a small network. Also, make sure there is a FreeBSD driver available for you model of adapter as not all of them are supported: www.freebsd.org/releases/8.1R/hardware.html#ETHERNET
Taylor Pinkham That's actually a worthwile idea, and a laptop will consume much less energy. Still, I think something like an Intel NUC is much more suited, and with energy cost you will reach break even after mostly 2 years.
one thing that would be awesome on this new channel is to have subtitles and have them translated in different languages. It would allow a lot more people to learn from this channel.
Wendell, I was introduced to pfSense by one of Logan's videos years ago. I've been using it ever since with much help from the pfSense forum. Will anxiously wait to see you expound on this platform and the various uses. Hopefully this will become a regular staple of the L1T programming.
I can already tell this is the tech channel I wanted to see emerge. Early stage and the formula is flying! I'm actually going to go to the forums it has precipitated that much enthusiasm.
So glad to still have Wendell creating content. I concur with pcfreak; MOAR networking! Snort, actual steps in setting up those programs/settings discussed in this video - Theory and practice!
I used to use pfsense, i miss it as my router. Excellent software, and i love its various functions, far better then the vast number of consumer routers. Just takes a bit of learning on your part.
The problem I have is I already have an ASUS N66U and linksys E1200 acting as APs for full house and garage coverage. To run pfsense on more hardware I would be fixing something not broken instead of being frugal, which was why I was calling myself a dumbass here. I've already spent the money instead of recycling a machine. Relegating a higher end linksys to AP only duty also seems like a waste of power. Welp, theres always plenty of headless server projects I can use it for.
planning on setting up an own pfsense router a couple of Days, this video came very good. i like the way you structure your Video. Not to nooblevel, lots of Informationen in a straight an good manor. so many Videos on UA-cam go so much into basics and the Moderator Start discribing very Basic stuff in Long Detail. you to it really good Hope for more videos on proxies and Traffic Analyse. I will join you on the Forum and maybe give some inout since i'm testing it already within a vm. Thanks for this great content
Awesome break down Wendall; just finished my FREENAS project, and was looking into a better router solution for the home until I ran into this video. Looks like I am going to be under the BSD hood again. Thanks for the info!
super overkill... I run a full featured pfSense box on a dual core AMD 6400+ and even with the new version eating more CPU it still averages about 7% usage.
I did exactly this. It's both my router and my NAS - but one of the reasons was I put both a quad port gigabit NIC and a quad port 10 GbE NIC since my RAID 1+0 runs more than twice as fast as a gigabit connection (uncached sequential reads come in at nearly 300 MB/s, cached saturate the 10 GbE nic). I'm running FreeBSD 11.0 on it using ZFS for the filesystem (with full disk encryption). Managed to get the quad 10 GbE NIC for $190 on eBay, and it came with 4 of the LC fiber optic modules. Spent another $17 on a single port 10 GbE card for my desktop and about $22 on a 15 meter LC fiber optic line.
I'd really like to see a Networking Basics Series for the uninitiated, that would be sweet as hell.
yup
good news, it's finally coming
@@GameCyborgCh is it in the works or is there a playlist you can link?
In a way Wendell leaving tek syndicate was the best thing that could happen for both parties involved
yeah but the old videos were so good... and they had higher view numbers so bigger budget
EliteSniperTV yea...
Ishiku_542561_aka_xchoibitschibi hi
I love what Wendell has done though the in depth stuff has helped me so much with networking
Actually, Logan and Qain are both doing...not so great.
Nuff said
I love these videos! Please make more of them, in particular I would love to see a video about VLANs!
Oh and please also on snort, sounds really interesting ;-)
The Y
pcfreak1992
A more in depth VLAN and VPN overview would be awesome.
When configuring a switch for VLAN always remember to configure the downstream AND upstream ports! Lot's of strangeness if you configure only 1, believe me I know...
Was coming to say the exact thing. VLAN video please and I wrote a paper on the topic in college I could share to help out with the script.
I built a router based on this video, it’s still a beast.
YOU!!!!!!!! Are the reason I watched TS. Glad to see you have your own channel now!
NLuKa420 Start with CompTIA A+
NLuKa420 Then go for MCSA in Windows 10.
Self taught all the way. It's slow going but rewarding. If you can accellerate with courses, do it. My next self taught project is setting up a Cisco 79xx VoIP LAN to work with my ISP.
made a pfsense for my 1/1 Gbps connection.

yea, i did a quick install and setup and got it everything working right now :D
Bill Meeks (Snort Package writer for pfSense) is a really great resource and super helpful. Maybe L1T can get him to do a guest appearance.
Man, level 1 is the best channel to learn about computing in depth
+1 for upcoming VLAN video! I've been running pfsense for a few years now and last year picked up a managed switch to experiment with VLANs, but I'm still lost as to how to set them up correctly.

I love you Wendell. Thank you for sticking to making videos and wading through all the bullshit. Stay strong.
I think I have learned more from this UA-cam channel in the past months than any other since I started on UA-cam over a decade ago.
Am I the only one who notices how this essentially *IS* Tek Syndicate?
Kinda interesting... Seems like Wendell was indeed most if TS.
AdanD66174U.2
Logan did make a pfSense video a while back and installed it in a GX280 or something. That and other nerdy game stuff is what TS was supposed to be.

2 years running PF sense, even running it in a hyper-v environment and it works flawless.

been using pfsense for years on some netgate boxes but have barely touched what it can do. keep these videos coming.
Quality video, good editing with top b roll. Well done wendell
I really liked the bit at 17:00 with the dings. Quite nice. Great job Level1...keep it up.
Yesss, love my pfsense box.
I'm terrible at anything networking related but i like to think that videos like these are helping me learn
Great tutorial and intro to pfsense!
I just deployed a 5 year old SFF desktop w/ pfsense at my house. Great results so far!
Will pfSense detect when your business partner is about to go full blown mental and take down the forums you setup?
lol
dat burn
Settle Gretel ;)
No, but the server box is great for bashing heads in. :)
Snort and Squid to the rescue. Be sure to get the watchdog package to keep the services online ;)
Just gotta say Wendell, I am absolutely loving your content. Great to see you still making videos! Keep up the great work and I would LOVE to see more about pfSense, freeNAS, etc. Server stuff is awesome!
Can this topic be revisited in 2022??
Not when it's 2025 😂
Really so very happy you're back with us. Just a small suggestion to get good mic and play around with compression as you have awesome speaking voice that would be ridiculously good with proper equipment/settings. Heck make a video out of it: How to Make Yourself Sound Like Howard Stern!
This is WHY I subsribed to this channel FUCKING AWESOME
I would LOVE if in future videos you did things to make networking hardware and software tutorials for the casual PC person. I'm no enthusiast but I have an interest in being able to control my own network but trying to find information online can be difficult. Your networking and linux tutorials in the past have been very enlightening for me in the past and very accessible even with my limited networking and software knowledge base. Please continue pursuing creating this kind of content!!
Year 2021...this is still useful or do we have better routers to buy?
If you use usb 3.1 gen 2 on 10gbit speeds then you effectively overcome that bandwidth problem tho. Not ideal but at least not running usb 2.0 speeds.
one thing that would be awesome on this new channel is to have subtitles and have them translated in different languages. It would allow a lot more people to learn from this channel.
Great stuff, Wendell et al.
Wendell, I was introduced to pfSense by one of Logan's videos years ago. I've been using it ever since with much help from the pfSense forum. Will anxiously wait to see you expound on this platform and the various uses. Hopefully this will become a regular staple of the L1T programming.
Good Stuff!
xD didnt expect u here
I wish I came across this tutorial b4 I built my home NAS, it really does help me understanding the idea of how to manage network.
AWESOME!!! MORE!!!
I can already tell this is the tech channel I wanted to see emerge. Early stage and the formula is flying! I'm actually going to go to the forums it has precipitated that much enthusiasm.
Thanks for the informative video as always!
So glad to still have Wendell creating content.
I concur with pcfreak; MOAR networking!
Snort, actual steps in setting up those programs/settings discussed in this video - Theory and practice!
Wendell you are best!
I used to use pfsense, i miss it as my router.
Excellent software, and i love its various functions, far better then the vast number of consumer routers.
Just takes a bit of learning on your part.
it runs like Greased Lightning !
This channel is well underrated. Good job guys!
I'm sorry but I have no other words for this other than the following: This is the shit! Excellent video.
i only understood like 40% of the content because i have 0 knowledge about how networking works. awesome vid! id like more info soon
Well now I just feel like a dumbass for getting that Linksys WRT1900ACS when I have a low power AMD A4 box literally doing nothing.
if you want then you could try to use your router as a wireless accesspoint for a pfsense box
Use your old routers as access points. Then you get all the BSD goodness with pfSense.
^ literally what they said. My old AC router is just a plain access point now, might upgrade to something better later.
Put OpenWRT on that thing and you have a very powerful router too.
Thank you Wendel! This video was extremely helpful. Please keep the pfSense advance videos coming!
wow already more vids than logan
planning on setting up an own pfsense router a couple of Days, this video came very good. i like the way you structure your Video.
Can you set up pfSense to cache everything to a freeNAS system?
Yea, with mount points and scsi
Awesome break down Wendall; just finished my FREENAS project, and was looking into a better router solution for the home until I ran into this video. Looks like I am going to be under the BSD hood again. Thanks for the info!
Heeeeeeee's Back!!!!!!!!
This is going to be a fun thing for my computer club to mess with. Thanks for your time showing us how to start this.
øhhhhhh just had a nerdgasm, thanks wendell :D
Good to see the best part of Tek Syndicate up and running cheers Wendel.
Can you run pfSense on a stock router?
And hey, can you block windows updates with this?
Yutaka Takenouchi depends on the type, but most routers that you can firmware upgrade yes
Yutaka Takenouchi you can block windows updates from windows, doesn't necessarily have to be from your network
you can probably not run pfsense on a consumer router but try to look in to dd-wrt or openwrt
anders ballegaard
I know dd-wrt and openwrt, was just curious if pfsense had a consumer router version.
pfSense is intended for high-end routers, so basically x86/x64.
Yeah Baby!! Pfsense boxes are awesome! If you have spare parts to complete the project ~ highly recommend!
if only hillary could have watched this video before setting up her mail server
Bressan Franco
Hillary or trump ..two faces for same coin
As someone with too many SFF computers this is a great project for me! Thank you!!
i dont know why but i want to buy a quad cpu motherboard and get 4 of the 22 core xeons, then build one of these.
super overkill... I run a full featured pfSense box on a dual core AMD 6400+ and even with the new version eating more CPU it still averages about 7% usage.
what if i want want to route all the internet traffic in the empire state building? then its not overkill.
ramosel but im not so i wont build it. twas just a thought.
i try pfSense but gave up on it to much work
I did exactly this.
Wendell WHY do you use Windows?!?!?
Olaf Der Wikinger he stated that he's "OS agnostic" so he uses both Windows and Linux.
Olaf Der Wikinger because you need windows to do stuff still
Because Windows is actually good and you really don't need fucking linux at all?
compatibility
and Mac OS X
