  • Maple veneered highboy with original etched cotter pin brasses. Inverted cup and trumpet legs with bun pad feet, typical of this period. A very hard to find highboy much less common than the later highboys of the Queen Anne and Chippendale periods.

Gotta say it’s great to see your interest in American antiques, specially a presumably young (sounding) person.

Beautiful piece. I feel lucky to even see it. Grain of drawers appear to go from side to side. In these days, 5 years away from when you discovered this chest, how much would one likely to pay for such a find?

That is so awesome. Where did you find it? where is it from? do you know any of its original history? If it could talk what stories would it tell. love that you shared it with us. Thank you!

+Kathie gillaspie I do not know where it is from, it has no provenance. I bought it at an antique store in northern New England. Tanks for your comment.

Beautiful - what does the locks look like? Are they warded and how many bars come up through the top?

I just bought the bottom half of a W&M highboy and I'm as excited as you. Is the grain in the drawers of yours running side to side or up and down? Mine is up and down which leads me to believe it's a little later... 1710ish.

I owned a 1715s American William & Mary Maple high chest on spool turned legs. It also had the same snipe hinges and engraved period brasses. The condition was original, except a very old refinish. I remember how it glowed like amber in the sunset. The provenance was very impressive: William & Mary College, Garven collection, some very old antique dealers and Sotheby's. All of the provenance were either recorded in William & Mary College or published in the Magazine Antique or Sotheby's auction catalogue. The chest included both of these publications. There were also many ex. museum and collection numbers and old antique dealer labels inside the case.
