    There is a reduction in quality using 60p/50m because playback at 30p is only 25m. You'll have double the bitrate recording in 30p/50m and playing back in 30p. Basically half the image quality or half the speed. Recording at 60p and adjusting the frame rate in post won't affect quality, like in your demonstration shows.

    Well done, lad. A lot of good general advice for such a short video. I have a couple of Canon DSLRs and Panasonic mirrorless cameras that do a fine job of video at normal-time frame rates but was looking for something other than a GoPro for slow motion (at a reasonable price). To tell you the truth, Sony just about sold me by including a dead cat for the built-in mike right out of the box.

    Good info as usual Vic. One point of your suggestion to put it in Manual Focus. If you're in Auto Focus mode, you don't have to worry about AF not being able to keep focus due to the high frame rate beacsue focus is locked once the camera enters HFR shooting standby, "even when using the auto focus"!

  • @T.O.D.
    @T.O.D. 3 роки тому +1

    @Vic Barry just a short question what is the reason for the 60fps 50M?
    Yes of course if you for example use the record 960fps and write 60fps 50M Option you can slow down in past about 40%, BUT the total slowdown will always be the same.
    If you do 60fps 50M you get a Initial x16 slowmo from 960fps divided by 60fps and can slow down in post for example to 60fps devided by 24fps additional x2,5 which leads to a total slowmotion of x40. When you go straight 960fps to 24fps it is also x40.
    Here comes the crucial part as you cramp 60fps into 50mBits/s Codec each frame gets only ~0,83mBit/s Bandwith where as if you aleady slowdown to 24fps every frame gets ~2,08mBit/s Bandwith which means way less compression, artifacting and overall reduction of image quality.
    Them if you want do speedramping or what ever in post your can easy speedup the footage in post without loss in quality to for example 60fps instead of 24fps.
    Maybe a idea to test for a new Video about the Zv-1 you might give it a try otherwise you can get more detailed Informations about codec and technical background for example from Gerald Undone.
    Love your Videos, keep going and always keep innovating.

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tim, great comment! Thanks for writing all that. Some great points there. Ultimately, when the ZV-1 spits out a 960fps file, it's coming out at whatever the fps was set (50/60) - Totally correct, that you can't really slow it down any more, but at 60fps you can certainly make it look slower / smoother. Sure, there's no extra frames there and we won't be slowing down any speeding bullets or what not, but it's more of an optical trick than anything else.
      Very true on the bit rate, it is squeezed to within an inch of it's life. It's not really suitable for anything beyond a tablet / phone / smallish size tv, but depending on where you're audience is viewing, it may not make any difference. Personally, I don't really use anything about the 120p as I don't really need anything more, and unless in an incredibly well lit situation, 960fps is not really any good at all, and even then it's a struggle to watch. But, great features to have in a tiny camera for people to have fun with, and that's what it's all about really.

  • @grobbs666
    @grobbs666 3 роки тому +1

    Why is changing from 24p or 30p better in the record settings? Isn't that just what speed it plays back at?
    If you got 240 frames and play back at 60, that's 4 times slower. Then you changed speed to 50% making it 8 times slower total.
    If you left it was 30p and again 240fps, 30 divided by 240 is just again 8 times slower.
    So what's the difference? I could possibly see setting it to 60p would produce a worse image depending on codec and bitrate.

    Hi Barry. Me bugging again, sorry for all the messages. I've googled a lot to try to find out how to film outside when it's high brightness, like yesterday 28 celsius and super sunny weather here in OSLO. I tried messing with the Aperture and also Shutter speed to get it darker, but videos became totally useless.. It was waaaay too bright, and no matter which of the settings aperture, shutter speed and exposure I messed with, videos became insanely bright anyways.. Zebra setting was fine at the time of the shooting, so I thought that I had the right setting, but then I came home and all of my videos was destroyed, overexposed and totally useless..
    Is it so that the ZV-1 is useless in direct sunlight situations? The tips I found on internet was to buy a filter, but the ZV-1 is a compact camera and doesn't support things like this.. I thought you might have some insight to this issue..

      Not sure what the second video is but there’s 2 slow motion options in the ZV1. The 120p allows you to slow things down in post while the s&q mode allows up to 960fps

    Great content! But everybody buying ZV1 for HFR slomo should know that RX 100 M5 is actually a better and cheaper slomo cam! Why? Well even though ZV1 has better processor and heat dissipation, RX100 M5 can make 150-300% longer clips with the same quality!
    Specs: ZV1 Quality Priority 250 fps 2 seconds, 500/1000 fps 1 second. Whereas RX 100 M5 can do: quality priority 240 fps 4 seconds, 500/1000 fps 3 seconds. Same story with the shoot time priority settings. I have no idea why Sony crippled the function...

      That took one too many takes for my liking. Cheap cakes hurling at your eye sockets are not a good idea. Especially when the cake hurler is not a skilled cake thrower

    But you can’t shoot in hfr 4k? How do you edit it together with 4k 24frp footage then?

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  Рік тому

      Depends on your timeline, but if it’s a 4K timeline then you need to scale the slow motion footage to the timeline size (if using premiere, SET TO FRAME SIZE)

    Not including a battery charger in the box is annoying. But everyone is doing it at this level.
