A Very nebulous innocuous explanation. Leading somebody in with a question that connects to one of your jokes is crowd work because you are working with the crowd. It's not Improv but it is a low-level form of crown work. And sometimes improv can come out of those generic lead-in questions.
Should new comics attempt crowd work on their showcase spots? It seems like it'd be higher risk for a new comic that may not get booked as often as seasoned comics.

What do you ask the audience for a conversation? And have them like them to practice with
Ask them the same introductory questions you would in a conversation. Where are you from ? What they do for a living? Ask about their dating status?
