- Kenny G, is one of the most requested artists within the smooth jazz music genre. What has given him a huge popularity. Unfortunately I have been not able to spread more of his music, as it is difficult to place any video of the without falling into legal problems. However I will take the chance to play this exclusive live performance video of him and his extraordinary band produced by the jazz channel back in 1999 here in Washington, DC on which I have the privilege to be part of it. So in the meantime let's enjoy this tune, composed by one of the greatest Brazilian composer of our time. Don Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Kenny G, es uno de los artistas más solicitados dentro del genero smooth jazz. Lo cual le ha dado una gran popularidad en el mismo. Desafortunadamente, no he podido difundir más de su música, ya que es difícil colocar cualquier video de el sin caer en problemas legales. Pero me quiero tomar el chance ya que este es un video muy exclusivo y nunca antes visto del concierto producido por el canal de jazz en el años 1999 y en el cual tuve el privilegio de ser parte de la producción.

Who would love playing in Kenny G's band? Certainly not me.
Me. The guy make a tons of money come on. And he's a real player. I think in his head he would love to make good music. But making money is not with good music. So he have to record this crap stuff but he's an excellent musician.

Let's contemplate "playing in Kenny G's band"... First class travel and hotels on world tours in the finest venues; the finest production, staging, and technical assistance along with paid rehearsals and related TV PR appearances; being scene by tens of thousands of happy audiences (including other musicians -- some of whom may want to hire you); being able to put a world-famous act's name and endorsement on your resume; getting paid a very good salary for playing your instrument alongside great musicians for a world-wide audience; and gaining the highest of professional experiences and networking contacts at every level of the music business. None of this precludes playing your own less-commercial music. If anything, it provides potential opportunities for you and your music. Does that really sound awful?

@@alansenzaki4148 Yes he does improvise, and yes he's a jazz musician. Get a copy of "Sleigh Ride" one of my favs by him and then tell me he can"t improvise.

I see the same criticism year after year, he still packs venues and sells albums, so the fact that some people can't stand how he plays or what he plays doesn't seem to matter all that much.

This band has four black musicians--Robert Damper and Karl Martin, both on keyboards, Ron Powell on percussion, and the late Bruce Carter on drums. Martin left the band in 2005.

Unlike his studio performance of this song which he delivers with an Ali-like exquisiteness and prowess, his delivery of This 'Girl From Ipanema' seems to be very contrive,subdued and reserved.
Kenny is not having fun;he looks timidly unsure of himself, and wishes not to be there before a much-expecting audience.
I can understand: 'uneasy lies the head that wears the golden crown'. So much is anticipated from the 'champ'.
Well, well! Ease him! Give me the well-prepared studio version.
The Brazillian sexy girl, whose tan I crave, seems to be herein under the weather. (Smiles)
This is a nice and simple rendition devoid of the improvisational dexterity he demonstrates in many of his studio versions of works of this rhythmic pulse. No chances to take before a live audience! I however give him a 4 out of 5 He exudes control, smoothness and excellent stage poise even though he appears over-cautious, and his performance contrite, yet beautiful. He is capable of a far better treatment of this song - listen to his studio work. These types of songs are done better, in my opinion, on tenor sax, without the trappings of reverb and echo. If Kenny is headin ' jazzwards', so to speak, in the Big League, the tenor is his weapon; he has that tenor jazz sound which can be nurtured into jazz's acceptability. But, as a would-be jazzman, he's got to take chances. Oh, yes! I know, 'uneasy lies the head that wears the golden crown.' Who cares? He has a fairly excellent understanding of ad lib. He's made lots of money; now, play for the love and longevity of it a la Prez, Bean, Trane, Stitt, Getz, Hawkins, Rollins, Byas

Je n'avais jamais remarqué que K. G. tenait son bec carrément sur le côté !!! Quant à la sonorité de son instrument , je n'ai jamais pu m'en faire une idée tellement le son est trafiqué . Je n'aime pas beaucoup K . G . , à mon avis , sa réputation est largement surfaite et à part sa coupe de cheveux, je ne lui trouve guère d'originalité : son jeu est fade et sans saveur, sans réelle personnalité . Je sui méchant hein ?? Désolé , ce garçon ne m'inspire pas du tout .
Je suis assez d'accord, c'est un bon technicien qui doit quand même travailler 2 ou 3 heures par jour, mais il n'a ni classe ni personnalité. C'est vrai qu'on est quand même méchant car j'aimerais avoir son niveau, mais lui c'est un pro qui doit gagner pas mal de sous et il ne le mérite pas vis-à-vis d'excellents musiciens qui galèrent.
Kenny G est bien aime de tous les capitalistes et de tous les imposteurs de la musique de JAZZ ORGANIQUE.

@@gillesd91 C'est juste pas un virtuose comme le sont Eric Marienthal ou encore les regrettés Joe Farrell et Michael Brecker, John Coltrane, Grover Washington etc. He was good with Jeff Lorber, but it started becoming ininteresting and uninspiring after he left Lorber.
