This is the best footage of the bad step I’ve seen. I was there in sept and storm Agnes was coming in, I decided not to do it and I’m so pleased I did now lol I hike alone and can’t really swim and I have dreads that weigh a planet when wet lol… great video and well done
Thanks I'm glad you liked the footage, yes if your not confident about something especially alone its worth not doing it, the mountains will still be there next time you get to Skye and perhaps you will be blessed with nice weather and can go do it. Remember the camera makes it look worse than it is, the hike was well worth the effort.
🤣 im just looking at this as i plan to stay at the bothy then camping by loch Coruisk so i will be carrying alll my camping stuff. seeing this vid im sure my backpack would make me swim next second...
but now i've looked again, i would be climbing it up not shimmimg down, much better option with 65l backpack! i may try this actually. also solo hiker here:)
@@marual69 there is a alt route so you dont have to go that way, Haze outdoors avoided it, if you look on his page and for the skye trail he shows you on a map the route he takes
Great video. If you're crossing fast flowing water face upstream and use your stick to give yourself a triangular base. Much easier than taking the water on one side and the water locks your knees for you. If it's very fast only use one shoulder strap and undo any belt. If you then do fall in you won't be pinned by the weight of your pack.
Absolutely brilliant Chris, outstanding footage and great edit, narration spot on which worked well with the video, looked like an amazing day and mostly dry. that step looked a bit dodgy but well done all.
@ChrisNewham I've just realised when I trekked the whole island in 2001 from the south thar we chose the route behind Marsco instead, in those days nobody was coming to Skye so we must have missed it on a map, there was certainly no UA-cam lol
I don't know about not being inherently dangerous i wouldn't like to fall off the Bad Step!A steel cable like the one on the Elie Chain ⛓️ Walk on the east coast would make it easier and less of a challenge.
Isn’t “crux” the word? No hate because I’ve seen someone post a video called “the bad step on helvelynn” and I just though hikers and climbers used the word crux? Great video anyway
No hate at all, thanks for the comment. The bad step is the name of the particular rock/section of the hike its on the map lots of rocks have names. What a climber would say is that the bad step section was the "crux" move ie it was the most difficult portion of the climb and typically if you can't complete the crux move you cant complete the climb although there is sometime an alternative route that bypasses the crux move.

Hey there, i would like so much to do this trail but this point Bad Step is horrible for me. Could I dodge somehow this part of the trail? 🙏🏻

I have always wanted to traverse the 'bad step' and looks just as scary as I thought. Nice one Chris
It wasn't too bad the fact it was wet meant more concentration was required, don't forget the camera angle is chosen to make most of the drama ;-)

Thanks for the info!
Well done Chris. Looks like a great day out in beautiful surroundings
It was! Thanks.
Best bad step upload I have seen...well done !
I did the Bad Step on my own in the rain with a pack that was far too heavy. I still break out into a sweat thinking about it 40 years later.

Glad you enjoyed it, it was an awesome day.
What a place that is. First time watching. New subscriber. Best wishes on the next adventure.
Thanks and welcome
Great video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Great job Guys!!!
Thanks it was an amazing day.
Ive never done the bad step, looks great fun!! done the ridge traverse a few times though, my favourite place on earth.
Well I suggest you make the time and go do the bad step it was a great fun with amazing views, handy route for a day when the clouds are low.

I’ve always thought walking with hands in pockets is an accident waiting to happen

Yes you have a point, but doing something difficult, pushing your limits and getting the heart rate and concentration up is part of the fun ;-)
Was that Donal's boat you crossed on?
It was a trip from Bella Jane boat trips at Elgol harbour.
The Bad step....Thats me done....🤣

Acting like that ankle deep water had great white sharks in it.. treacherous 🤣🤣🤣
