I’m old enough to remember this story. It’s interesting to know a bit more about the background. Psychopaths are generally created, I understand, from dramatic events in their life, but with an underlying predilection. They rarely revert, so I was really interested to read that she had a child.

@@dianeoconnor8310 she was a child and put through severe abuse off her mother cuz tax payers like yourself didn't take a blind bit of notice, even though there was enough red flags to start a bull ring business. I mean it's sickening what Mary probably saw and endured at such a young age. She was a victim too, and she still endured abuse in prison. Unless you've lived that life, you can't never judge or should make such remarks, its ignorant. Mary deserved a chance at life too.. and she has showed to everyone that she wasn't evil, she was a traumatised little girl who had NO ONE in her life. She was alone and almost ferrol in many ways due to her mother. she's never reoffended and is a grandmother now at 66.

This is a great video!!! I love your accent!!! It's nice to hear a true crime story from someone who's actually from the area, it makes it a lot more authentic! I've been fascinated by Mary Bell's story since I first discovered it when I was working on a finals project at Cascadia community college! You provided a lot of info that I hadn't known before. I think it was mainly Mary's horrifying and tragic upbringing that made her a psychopath. Well and when you're 11 years old, even for a normal kid, your since of reality is very distorted! So that, plus she was suffering from homicidal tendencies and trauma on top of it! So I would say she couldn't be held completely responsible for her actions. Nobody's born evil, she was made that way. But as of recently, Mary Bell's actually a Grandma now! Her daughter had a kid. So fortunately Mary was able to change and now she has a great life. Which is good, but it's still too bad about those little boys. Betty Bell should've gone to prison for child abuse! It's a very bizarre, demented story!!!!! Awesome video!!!

Sorry I don't agree. Whatever made her that way, she was a calculating clever cold blooded killer. A scycopath.. An 11 Yr old knows right from wrong, knows not to hurt a young child. People like that don't change, however they appear to the outside world. Very scary.

Having been brought up in a very toxic family i can honestly say nobody is born evil but they do become or can become evil due to what happens behind closed doors.
While i finally managed to walk away from it all i still have the mental and physical scars that run very deep and know i've got complex ptsd which i can finally or hopefully can control and i'm now in my mid fifties yet they still to this day try to destroy what i've worked for given the chance which is why non of them know who i work for or where..
Nobody knows what evil goes on behind closed doors until the victim speaks out

Fascinating, I lived in this area for a couple of years before moving to a new house in Longbenton. This was 1960 /61, and we did general mayhem among the derelict houses. The street was Enfield Road, 2 rooms gas lighting, a back yard, tap outside along with toilet. It was grim, but I didnt sense any violence. I think we moved at the right time, because the drug scene was just appearing, so things were going downhill. Thanks for another lovely Video, shook up my memory cells a bit.

It’s my understanding, that with help , she lived a law abiding adult life, bringing up her daughter. She too was a victim. Never had a chance. Sympathies to the grieving families, but to her also. Really good video. Not sure her current location, however vague, should have been given out. I’m sure she doesn’t need any attention.

Very interesting video Eddie, not your usual subject matter. Part of my first degree was psychology and the debate about nature/nurture was ongoing. In this case I get the strong feeling (no science) that nurture played a huge part. I find myself torn whether to be happy or not that she is now living a normal life with a daughter of her own, but this sort of shows (I hope) that she has moved beyond the evil that drove her actions back then.

If it’s part of Tyneside’s history or culture, I’m interested snd I think true crimes is a fascinating area to explore.
I agree about the nurture. From 4 years old she was being sexually abused and probably witnessed her mother being strangled and having her mouth smothered.
There is a saying though that one is born a psychopath but become a sociopath. I suspect she was probably sociopathic as she has the hallmarks.
Fascinating story snd hope you enjoyed it Ian

Born and bred scotswood and mary bell suffered a lot as a child. She only spoke about her upbringing when her mother passed away. The book geta serini crys unheard explains. All about the mindset of a child mary bell. Its all a sad fact of being brought up in poverty. I do believe the community of scotswood were let down and to flatten the place and call it the rise is a kick in the teeth to the people who lived in that community..

In the 1960s, I worked as a porter/driver at Prudhoe Mental Hospital. I was told to go to Newcastle and pick up two young girls. I picked them up with the hospital mini-bus from a facility in Newcastle. The girls were both very pretty and for the whole journey, they never said a word. I was to drop them off at a home/ward at the Children's Village in the hospital. I believe it was called the Flemming ward. I was never told on that day who these children were, all I knew was they were there to be assessed. When I did find out who they were I was shocked as they appeared to be quiet and well-mannered. I wouldn't have thought they were capable of doing what they did.

I was brought up around this area until I was 11, living off Scotswood Road calling them slums is generous, we would play in these derelict houses, breaking windows, creating general mischief etc, being outside was far better than staying in. I lived in a home with an outside toilet, scullery, front room and a single bed room, for 2 adults and 4 children, there was a fifth but my sister died. I remember this case, I was 13, this young girl was a damaged individual due to her upbringing and early life experiences. Being brought up in this area where poverty was all around was challenging and carried a certain stigma, whether she is or was evil I will leave that to the experts but her early childhood experiences may have played a part.

I also remember the Tin Lizzie and the old abandoned bus used as a play den!!! I born in 1963 on Armstrong Road next to Hodkinson Park and went to St Joseph's RC.

Not quite sure how I missed this one , I have never heard of this story before and it must have been very shocking at the time. I have studied in adolescence development and what we do know from studies is that adverse childhood experiences can have an overwhelming impact on the way in which a child grows up, I do feel while she herself was subjected to a horrific up bringing not all that are subjected to events such as hers go on to kill and act out the horrors they endure which then begs the question what makes individuals act out in this way. I feel that what she did can’t solely be down to her adverse childhood trauma. Great video Eddie would love to see more like this!

One of my old neighbours was a serial killer who I met on several occasions so I love true crime stories like this.
I went through emotional and physical abuse when I was a kid but I've not gone on to kill anyone.
I was described the same way as Mary when I was a kid but back then they didn't know about autism so I was labelled wrong as having n explosive personality disorder.
I have all my documents from my childhood and they state I wet the bed and was even ecopretic I think it's called where I used to soil myself.
I used to suffer nightmares and still do on occasions and my father basically tortured me and even poisoned me by forcing me to drink vinegar which I originally thought was water.
I'm still waiting for counselling 40 years later and keep having to jump through one hope or another and still get nowhere.
I wasn't born evil but I was raised in a violent and abusive atmosphere and when my father died in 1989 all the hurt and pain came out and I was "imprisoned" in a children's home which felt like punishment.

Mary, or May as she was known, had an upbringing so cruel and abusive that she was a disaster waiting to happen. She was failed by everyone, including the authorities before and after the murders.
How can a child know right from wrong when her prostitute mother makes them do such horrific things with her customers and tried on 2 or 3 occasions to kill her?
However, in later years, she has carved out a normal life for herself and her family, finding a partner who understands, loves and protects her.
She has never broken the law in any way again.

@@TynesideLife I just came across your channel lad and love it.
My Gran lived in the West End with my Mam and Dad, my Mam was pregnant with me at the time. Her terrace was the next one down from Mary's. Everyone knew the Bell's and the tragedy was the reason my Gran moved to Longbenton in 1969.
She always called Mary "that poor bairn, May." as everyone knew what her mother was up to.
Your video was excellent and unlike most of the others about the case focused on the abuse she went through rather than painting her as born evil. No kid is born evil.

Just adding my two pence.i reckon she was put on that path of evil deeds by her parents.they really messed her head up .it's easy in hindsight to blame the authority figures in her life abit too but aye I think she was driven to insanity by her parents and that's how she became a murderer .
