I think since they wanted Dolores to shine as the earth element fighter, Kukri was a sacrifice. But to be fair getting hit with hundreds of pounds of sand would be painful. I think if he could manipulate it into glass shards it would be more visceral. Or maybe an army of sand clones or he could have gone full Gaara. I think that's what we were all expecting. You can tell who got more design attention.

I had no idea the teleport had a hit box.

They also nerfed the damage to top it all off so it's now one of the least damaging climaxes too
