Thank you @MrElectron I tried this with an old Alternator, Power supply to the armature and 12v and 24Vdc to a cheap BLDC controller off Amazon - I am learning a lot - great to repurpose these brilliant machines!
The easiest way to get the end with the brushes back on is to push the brushes into the housing and put a straightened out paper clip in that hole to hold the brushes retracted. Once the cover is on, pull the paperclip and the allow the brushes to drop into place.
You never tap a cover on to seat the brushes.....it will chip or break the brushes. That hole in the top of the brush holder is for that...you push the brushes back into the holder, insert a straightened paper clip, slide on the cover until it fully seats and then remove the paper clip, allowing the brushes to seat safely onto the slip rings.
This is the best video in its class the only one that actually took the time to give pertinent details to the technology and I agree with one of the comments replace the windings go with permanent magnet MarkMannM2
Thank you so much for these types of information that help me and others who need to learn everyday. The more we know the better this world will become. By sharing simple things it makes life easy for those who needs it.
You need to connect the coils into a delta configuration to improve the performence of the motor cause in a delta configuration the motor use the 100% of the voltage and improve the start torque
This 3-phase DC> AC conççverters turn into a brushed BLDC motor, and this auto alternator can also be converted into a brushless BLDC motor. Then N-S-N-S- in the middle with the neodium magnets. This can be accomplished by slicing (irons in the form of mutual fingers surrounding the electromagnet rotating in the middle are also magnetized when DC current is given in N-S-N-S. form). Thus, when 12 volt DC is not supplied over the battery> brush> rings, the permanent permanent magnet is supplied with a 3-phase AC current inverter with a rotor (the brushes are removed from the bracelets in this case) and this alternator speed is adjusted as BLDC. The hub, that is, in the BLDC motors, the 3-phase windings in the core are stationary and the magnetic ring surrounding it rotates, while this time the magnet rotor inside is rotated when it is applied by controlling the 3-phase currents with a potentiometer from the inverter. Good luck with.
As I previously posted in part 1, this can be done by using an aftermarket permanent magnet rotating field or waste power applying power to the rotating field and yes you would use ALL three paired stationary stator windings driving them with a three phase motor controller, it would have to be a really big 100A controller. Of course this is fine if you just want to tinker/play around, otherwise it is really a waste of time, might just as well use a starter, something that was designed to be a motor in the first place. Then again if you could integrate it into your vehicle accessory belt drive system, you could use it to give a little extra horsepower for going up hills...Ford actually already has a system like that.
Hi, nice video. I think it is the future of converted petrol bike to e-bike. Also you can make some test like brake test, to measure its torque. Keep on track dude!
You have to change rotor cheap weak magnets for strong neodymium ones and apply 50 V instead of 12 V connecting it with 50 V brushless controller. It will be much more powerful.
Very good job. But it will be much more better if you have a continue source of power supply rather than relying on battery power. Like hooking up another alternator with a belt driven to recharge (dc) the two batteries that are losing there juice😁 just a tot
Nice video sir! For clarification sir, will you please tell us again what winding is that, the one that you left unwired, and the three other windings that you connected to the controller. Is it possible to connect the controller to the 12 volts battery for its power supply.
Great video I'm wondering if this could be used in a car audio setup like if I mounted the alternator on a piece of wood running to a lithium bank and converted the alternator to put out a DC current could I charge my lithium bank and or batteries like this using the cars electrical to power the alternator I'm completely clueless when it comes to stuff like this and I've been gone for a long time over 10 years when I left an extra battery in the trunk was doing big things in car audio now everybody's got massive lithium Banks ultra cap Banks lto batteries you name it but they're powering all of that with high output alternators but in my case I've got a newer version car a 2019 Toyota Camry that has a newer electronics build where the computer keeps you from adding a high output alternator to your vehicle so I'm trying to figure out a way to create an alternate source of power in the trunk so that I can put any kind of system I want in my car and I'm not limited and to be honest nobody in car audio knows anything about this because most of them have a vehicle that they can just put a high output alternator onI however don't have a vehicle like that so I'm trying to figure out some way to charge a lithium bank if I got one or lithium batteries without having to do some major conversion to my engine and car computer system any advice would be greatly appreciated or if you know of someone who makes a setup or something like what I'm talking about and can point me in the right direction anything would help I'm at a loss and don't know enough about electrical to attempt it without help
I have a controller with just two wires input power to controller and two wire output to DC MOTOR. How do I connect this, seeing yours has 3wires for the 3 phase?
if you lower the voltage on the rotor you can get much higher rpms (With a loss of torque of course). I found that 6volts on the rotor can work nicely but around 2volts can really fly, just hard to get started
The strong field using higher voltage on the the rotor results in higher back emf per rpm. Great for high torque at low rpm but at a rather low maximum rpm at a given voltage to the ESC. The opposite it true with a weaker field resulting in lower torque but higher RPM. Controlling the field voltage and the ESC can make a motor not needing a transmission for an ebike or similar.
Good information thanks. Also can you do a video showing how long it takes to run the battery capacity out most people that want to build an electric bicycle are worried that the alternator would drain the battery capacity too quickly can you show your work under load driving a bicycle?
Nice job! How did you determine the sequence of the three phases of the alternator? Those have to match the sequence generated by the controller, otherwise the motor will not run properly.
How much torque does it produce? would it do to use for bicycles? thank you I've enjoyed your channel for a couple years and have boosted my electrical knowledge thanks so much
the little hole above the brushes is so you can push the brushes in and use a tooth pick or a paper clip to hold the brushes in while you slide the cap back on, the way you did it worked but it could have caused damage to the brushes
Finally the alternator wired properly and powered !!! Like the good style content,,,,, think an 7 volt lithium can power an alternator windings ?is 12 the number,,,
@Mr Electron Couldn't these be easily converted to a DC Welder? If so, which wires would you connect together? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers! :-)
Great and clear explanation. I'll try this but the linked controller is only run at 20Amp and 500w so can this Alternator pull a small kid's kart? Have you try to run the motor longer than an hour? if the controller will not burn?

I'd like to know why you also had to connect a charger to the controller if it's only supposed to be a 12v motor. Does that mean that you have to have 2 12v batteries hooked to it to power a bike?

Glad you didn’t make the mistake of cleaning out the dirt and grim before reassembly as these motors/alternators won’t work without the dirt.
