I remember this race well. Dale won on my coil springs I , Russell Landrum, designed Landrum Gold Coils - first company to ever dyno every coil spring and provide print out sheets of every spring every 1000th of an inch. 23 years later it's common setup practices.

Always. Him and Schrader both. They were talking once at Talladega, and I (about 10 years old) approached them for an autograph. Herman said “hey kid, listen to this”, and proceeded to tell Schrader and me a funny racing story before signing my autograph. He treated me like I was one of the guys, and I appreciated that.

I don’t care much for NASCAR anymore, but I was there that day and it was unbelievable. When he went by Jr and took the lead…. I am not exaggerating when I really thought the bleachers were going to collapse from people jumping up and down. Dale was high, low, middle, high again…it was nothing less than amazing! Joe and Kenny got him there though!

I was at this race.....turn 4 low.....i could see into both cars as they unwound their stearing wheels coming onto the front stretch. I can testify that Dale was signalling (waving) with his right hand to stay in line. Had Kenny on my scanner and (God as my witness) Kenny told his spotter to tell Dale's spotter to tell Dale " to stop waving....Im not going anywhere......2nd looks a hell of a lot better then 15th." Thats the way I remember it.

Really? You must be a younger fella who got into nascar very late. No disrespect meant whatsoever, seriously. I thought everyone who knew anything about Dale Sr knew that was his final victory, and only a matter of months before he lost his life at the start of the very next season in the 01' Daytona 500. I think it was sometime in the middle of 2000, when Dale Sr FINALLY got his badly needed neck surgery from the best neurosurgeon in the nation. Because for several years, he was enduring severe neck pain that was affecting his racing. Remember hearing about how he passed out & hit the outside wall all by himself during the very 1st lap of a race a couple years before? It was because of his bad neck injury. After the surgery, which made him feel brand new, Dale Sr and the Childress team were on fire, with updated equipment/cars/engines, etc, running VERY strong, and most everyone firmly believed that Dale Sr would be SO strong for the 01' season, he was poised to win his 8'TH CHAMPIONSHIP........surpassing Richard Petty and IF he had lived and accomplished that, he would still be the only driver to have won 8 of em. But as we all know.....sadly, fate would take his life. Cheers.

What people don't remember from that race is Jr very well could have won. He was behind Skinner and didn't want to push him to the win over Sr and stepped out under the yellow line with 2 to go to try to pass him and that essentially gave Sr the win and threw Jr about 15 places back. I think Jr and Sr traded paint when he was going by also.
