LMAO Short's comment on the arbiter who demanded to check Short for electronic devices when he was in time pressure during his earlier games 3:37 "I think he's an idiot "
This is him apparently: watch?v=nWm-Ho4ZTAA Also listed here for the 2016 Baku event: bakuchessolympiad.com/content/61 Seems he is listed as category 'D' though.

To be fair, not sure many people have the standing or encyclopedic knowledge of FIDE rules that Short has. He was one of the only people who could have gotten away with this.
FIDE Rules of Chess - Article 12: The role of the Arbiter 12.2 The arbiter shall: (a) ensure fair play (b) act in the best interest of the competition (c) ensure that a good playing environment is maintained (d) ensure that the players are not disturbed (e) supervise the progress of the competition (f) take special measures in the interests of disabled players and those who need medical attention.
Interesting story. But Short is right. The search during the game may disturb the player.Furthermore there should be a formal complaint by the opponent. Did it happen?
I can understand that Nigel was pissed, but then again, there have been a lot of cheating incidents. And rightfully so, there is pressure on FIDE that something is done about it...
Many mysteries and intrigues. Sounds like a Feature Film! Screenplay writes itself. Casting? I see Daniel Craig in the Daniel King role. As to Nigel, perhaps Nigel himself? Yes yes I know, it is perhaps the best idea yet conceived. Ha!
shame he wasnt asked how he feels about women in chess that would have been interesting i remember him being brushed aside when Anna Muzhychuk did a Masterclass in Gibralter and was interupted by his disparaging comments on women in chess she finished on more points than Nigel in the Open that yeah hes a first class Prat though a good player
Short is right. Search during the game disturbs the player. Check players before and/or after. Check the bathrooms at any time you want. But do not bother players during the game.
I mean, sweet as Fabian Caruano or Wesley So or MVL or even Magnus come across in interviews, they wouldn't say boo to a goose, let alone something memorable or controversial, or even interesting. Compare that with Short, Kasparov, Jan Timman, even Vishy - all that generation, let alone the Fischers or the Spasskys.
unfortunately Mr Short cheated in his game versus Li Chao in the recent Olympiad.. Not in the way that is commonly thought however. Nigel had his assistant, a man known only as "Dr Zeldano", hack into Li Chao's clock and shave .10 off of each second. There such as, Li Chao received 10% less time than Short. Chao naturally became unglued and instigated the controversial cheating outrage in which Short was strip searched and forced to continue the match in a bathrobe with a silhouette of a Staunton Bishop on the back. Short won the game but British chess lost her honor.
I think if you're going to leave the table mid match and go to the toilet - you should expect to be checked - whether you are magnus or a 400 elo playing for fun in a pub. Being angry at it because you see it as an affront to your reputation is pretty lame in 2024 and is open to misinterpretation. If I was a GM I would welcome security and anti cheat measures - they need to be encouraged not fought. Nigel doesnt seem to be very well liked or talked about in Chess outside of the UK from what I've seen . I respect him as a chess player but this kind of out dated mindset needs to called out imo
It's going to be Short, but it's going to be long!
Great interview, I enjoyed it a lot.
What a star you are, GM Short. I love to hear you and your frank views.
Great interview! Always nice to hear from Nigel Short.
Agreed! Love how he simply tells it like it is. He's bluntly honest, and you know exactly where he stands on every issue.
Well said.

Do you think the film is stopped towards the end because Nigel actually names the arbiters who confided in him...? 😂
Nigel is a Spassky-new-version ! He is such a moral and respectful human being 💙
Very respectful 🤣
Great work !!!! Congratulations! Interesting :)
Glad a person of such high caliber and integrity is the current vice president of FIDE.
Strong words for a man who after all was doing his job......it is a shame we don't hear the other side of the story ....
Doing his job wrong, article 12.2 (d).
To be fair, not sure many people have the standing or encyclopedic knowledge of FIDE rules that Short has. He was one of the only people who could have gotten away with this.
Very entertaining!!

Very entertaining interview. Excellent!
Come on now, they checked Usain Bolt during the 100m Olympic final sprint, didn't they?

Nigel not lying.. But to call someone not fit enough to clean my boot.. Hmmm!ok.. Pissed off.
But tell us how you really feel about him, Nigel.
"This is a person that obviously is not fit to clean my booth!" ROFL ...!
"A fine English dude". Not everybody is qualified to clean his shoes :)
Well Argued. Right. Bravo!
Nigel... What a hero...
Since when is a quick, Short chat 13 minutes? Daniel re-title the video. But, I did enjoy it.
Well done Nigel!
Kasparov is half-Armenian so perhaps that or politics was why he was airbushed.
hes Anti Putins Russia more likely the reason
Boy, agree or disagree - makes you realise how bland the current generation are.
what do you mean?
Good point Matt, you never hear the modern players make the slightest criticism of an utterly corrupt governing body.
What has FIDE done that's so bad to the "modern players"? I assume you mean the young SuperGMs/GMs.
Also, is it really wise for them to say anything bad about FIDE even if they dislike FIDE?

Lol, soft voiced but he definitely doesn't hold back with his views, does he? Haaaaa haaaaa haaaaaa Nigel Nigel Nigel 5:36 had me rollin on the floor

Lol!
Go Nige!
Nigel ignores the rules, continues to piss off everyone around him, and whinges about it.
