I would like to thank you for the lessons you’ve taught me. I play electronically but I use the same concepts. The app I use forces me to be quick in order to get a good score but I still wouldn’t do as well as I do without your tutelage. It is SO fun and I think it helps keep my brain young.

Great explanations! I find I can solve most puzzles with this technique and the pairs, along with the pairs patterns that I’ve kind of gotten in my head with experience. I have Tourette’s Syndrome and puzzles help me ground myself and decrease my tics after a long day 😊

I love your enthusiasm, and this is a great tutorial. Although, 10:24 You didn't have to fill in that previous 8 to come to this conclusion, it was already impossible for the 8 to be placed anywhere else, just thought I'd point that out, as I did notice that pretty fast.

I like to write the numbers outside so I save myself some time in not going through the entire process of all nine numbers. For example, you marked 2,3,5,7,8. While working that row, those are the only numbers I am concerned about. This also helps prevent you from putting the wrong number in like that pesky 9 that slipped in on you. Your videos are very helpful! Thank you.
I truly don't see how the outside the box method was helpful since he had to also write my numbers inside the box... and then arbitrarily place numbers in other parts of the puzzle (such as the Number 5). I'm confused. 😳

Just a hint, if you consider the outside numbers (2,3,5,7,8), you do not need to check all possible numbers (1-9) for blank cells in the rows. Because 1 4 6 9 are already not possible
@SudokuGuy I’m saying this technique is just a convoluted version of the simpler techniques that don’t use notes, and it doesn’t work on difficult puzzles because the sets won’t ever be cancellable. Ex: (5,6) , (5,8), (6,8), (5,6,8)
@SudokuGuy I mean, why use this technique when it only works on easy puzzles because the basic techniques can be used to solve the same puzzle without all the note takings?

I started also creating my own sudokus and variants. But you are biggest reason that I started sudoku and biggest thanks belongs to you!
After you put that first 8 at 9:54, you could have used the same technique again and straight away put 7 in the first empty block of that row because only one small 7 was left in the row.
Thanks for the effort and explaining different techniques to solve sudoku puzzles. I have a question though. In the first step you have identified missing numbers in our example row, why you did not use that list of 5 numbers to find small numbers (possibilities) but rather tried all 1-9 numbers?
Hi Adrin good question. I am a teacher and thus provide a step by step approach for the player whiois learning a technique for the first time. Experienced players need not have to do this.
@@SudokuGuy I admit it thru me off too. When you were approaching it from a line of 9 numbers and writing the missing ones to the side and then jumped to analyzing the individual square, it was confusing. I think approaching the individual square first is primary to solving the larger puzzle. I can look at the first square and start with the first missing number and look up/down and across the connecting rows to see if it is in another corresponding square. If so, then it can't fit in that row it has to go into a different row within that block. I just keep working that angle and you will see where the blocks exists and eliminates it from that row then know where the missing number belongs. I sometimes just scan the squares down and across to see if I can see matching numbers that show me where to place the final missing number. Like"2" is in square 2 row 3; and then "2" is in square 1 row 1 so that has to mean "2' has to go into square 3 in "row 2". Course you have to check the down rows too because you might have more than one empty spot in the same square/row and have to do the same process of elimination to plug it into the right empty spot. You can get to where you can scan for this in no time eliminating a lot of numbers and move on to the harder ones but have gotten a lot of the easier ones out of the way already and you are also playing against the clock too, well online anyway.

This technique has been so helpful for me, before this I had never been able to solve medium puzzles without taking a number as "a hunch" and then along the way that hunch would have/have not messed up the puzzle for me.. I can now have confidence in solving a medium/hard puzzle using this trick easily, thanks so much sudoku guy! :))

Maybe you didn't watch the whole video before posting this comment. He said multiple times that "for the sake of argument" he will put in a few extra numbers to demonstrate this technique. It was never meant to be solvable from the beginning.
Thank-you Mike77. I tried to do this puzzle b4 watching the vid, and noticed within a few minutes that 4,5,8 in column 1 and row 6 make the Box 5 unsolvable. As for saying, suppose I put a 5 here and suppose I put a 3 there... some people are going to miss-interpret that as a technique. No SUDOKU instructor should ever use an unsolvable puzzle unless it is for the specific purpose of teaching people how to recognize that the puzzle is unsolvable.
I agree Mike. I'm guessing the problem is the 1 and 4 in block 2 column 6 because there needs to be a 4 in row 4 block 5 I discovered it was invalid when I tried to do the puzzle before watching the Lesson :(

Unfortunately, the puzzle shown here has no solutions. That is to say, it is self-contradictory right from the start. Using my technique, I encountered a contradiction after just 6 moves (although I didn't notice until about the 12th move). This is the order in which I started the solve (here, in each triple of digits, the 1st indicates the digit to be written, the 2nd indicates the row number (1 to 9 from top to bottom), and the 3rd indicates the column number (1 to 9 from left to right): 646, 842, 823, 834, 232, 552. At this point, there is no place for a 4 in box 4. As it happens, the same contradiction could have arisen after just two moves: 842, 552. Indeed, with a little extra reasoning, the contradiction can be revealed before writing in anything. None of this invalidates your technique, but it's a bit unfortunate.
Thank you mate, I have a real headscratcher, I solved as long as I can and have filled out all the potential numbers in every single cell. Can't understand how it is possible to solve. I do not know every advanced techniques so I think it must be some advanced technique that is needed to know to be able to solve it!

Great tutorial, lots of patience... What I was missing was using the row marks and simply searching for those 5 numbersin each cell (instead of going 1-9 all the time). Since you put it down already, recognizing the missing digits, you might have used it, as well.
It makes no sense first writing all the numbers down that can be filled out in that row and next not using it. Each time you check all numbers from 1 to 9 while you actually only have to check the numbers that are still missing: the ones you wrote down at the right of the row. By not limiting you to these numbers you almost made an error (the nine, remember) and you needed more time than necessary.

Your explain approaches that are very understandable. I thought I was simply great at solving sudoku puzzles. My determination led me to spend a lot of time solving “ hard” puzzles. But I came across a very hard puzzle that had me spending far too much time trying to solve the puzzle. After five days I realized that I was not able to place a number. I gave up my pride and found you on UA-cam.. You were explaining an approach. to a very hard puzzle. Thanks to your ability explaining very understanding ways to solve tough puzzles, I went back to my very hard puzzle and finally solve the puzzle. Have to agree about the computer assistance. It makes learning and applying various techniques easier but can handicap you when you don't have all those features available.
It’s great to be able to see how the methods work using the computer. But yes you are right you need to learn how to do them without the assistance. If you look at tutorial 40 and above you will learn many moe ways to solve. Robin

He isn't saying you should be able to find out that is a 3 from where he was, but he means if you took his example of filling out numbers for each row and found oh there is a 3 here what does that mean for this other 23 pair? Oh, I can solve that. That type of thing.

Hello sir! That was a cute yippie, I also followed your technique, but separate them by row 1 row 2 and row 3 and then left, middle and right. Most of the time it works when Iam stuck with my puzzle, 90%, but sometimes not. Nevertheless, thank you so much for your guidance. I am going through your videos to gain more insights. I have been playing sudoku for almost 10 years, it is amazing to see different techniques being applied to this puzzle. Sudoku is a beautiful puzzle waiting to be cracked. Hello, Im a bit confused about the 5. Because before you put the 5 in the cell left corner there were more possibiltys in the collom above and under. You take the time to fully explain, which is excellent. I am puzzled (excuse the term) why you worked out the list of possible values for the row, but then as you worked on each cell you considered ALL values including the ones you had already eliminated as possibilities?

Just a point. If you go through and select out the numbers that are left to put into the row, when you go through the boxes you only need to check for those numbers.
You are right. For experienced players but not for beginners. I'm a teacher. Certainly you can use this approach, however it may become messy if your grid is small.

I would like to thank you for the lessons you’ve taught me. I play electronically but I use the same concepts. The app I use forces me to be quick in order to get a good score but I still wouldn’t do as well as I do without your tutelage. It is SO fun and I think it helps keep my brain young.

Great explanations! I find I can solve most puzzles with this technique and the pairs, along with the pairs patterns that I’ve kind of gotten in my head with experience. I have Tourette’s Syndrome and puzzles help me ground myself and decrease my tics after a long day 😊

I like to write the numbers outside so I save myself some time in not going through the entire process of all nine numbers. For example, you marked 2,3,5,7,8. While working that row, those are the only numbers I am concerned about. This also helps prevent you from putting the wrong number in like that pesky 9 that slipped in on you. I truly don't see how the outside the box method was helpful since he had to also write my numbers inside the box... and then arbitrarily place numbers in other parts of the puzzle (such as the Number 5). I'm confused. 😳

Just a hint, if you consider the outside numbers (2,3,5,7,8), you do not need to check all possible numbers (1-9) for blank cells in the rows. Because 1 4 6 9 are already not possible

Agree. He already determined the empty cells had to be 2,3,5,7,8. Those were the only numbers he should have been checking in each individual cell.
@SudokuGuy I’m saying this technique is just a convoluted version of the simpler techniques that don’t use notes, and it doesn’t work on difficult puzzles because the sets won’t ever be cancellable. Ex: (5,6) , (5,8), (6,8), (5,6,8)
@SudokuGuy I mean, why use this technique when it only works on easy puzzles because the basic techniques can be used to solve the same puzzle without all the note takings?

After you put that first 8 at 9:54, you could have used the same technique again and straight away put 7 in the first empty block of that row because only one small 7 was left in the row.

Thanks for the effort and explaining different techniques to solve sudoku puzzles. I have a question though. In the first step you have identified missing numbers in our example row, why you did not use that list of 5 numbers to find small numbers (possibilities) but rather tried all 1-9 numbers?
Hi Adrin good question. I am a teacher and thus provide a step by step approach for the player whiois learning a technique for the first time. Experienced players need not have to do this.
@@SudokuGuy I admit it thru me off too. When you were approaching it from a line of 9 numbers and writing the missing ones to the side and then jumped to analyzing the individual square, it was confusing. I think approaching the individual square first is primary to solving the larger puzzle. I can look at the first square and start with the first missing number and look up/down and across the connecting rows to see if it is in another corresponding square. If so, then it can't fit in that row it has to go into a different row within that block. I just keep working that angle and you will see where the blocks exists and eliminates it from that row then know where the missing number belongs. I sometimes just scan the squares down and across to see if I can see matching numbers that show me where to place the final missing number. Like"2" is in square 2 row 3; and then "2" is in square 1 row 1 so that has to mean "2' has to go into square 3 in "row 2". Course you have to check the down rows too because you might have more than one empty spot in the same square/row and have to do the same process of elimination to plug it into the right empty spot. You can get to where you can scan for this in no time eliminating a lot of numbers and move on to the harder ones but have gotten a lot of the easier ones out of the way already and you are also playing against the clock too, well online anyway.

This technique has been so helpful for me, before this I had never been able to solve medium puzzles without taking a number as "a hunch" and then along the way that hunch would have/have not messed up the puzzle for me.. Hi mike 77 You are right, however this was a demonstration of a technique. It was NOT a complete puzzle.
Maybe you didn't watch the whole video before posting this comment. He said multiple times that "for the sake of argument" he will put in a few extra numbers to demonstrate this technique. It was never meant to be solvable from the beginning.
Thank-you Mike77. I tried to do this puzzle b4 watching the vid, and noticed within a few minutes that 4,5,8 in column 1 and row 6 make the Box 5 unsolvable. As for saying, suppose I put a 5 here and suppose I put a 3 there... some people are going to miss-interpret that as a technique. No SUDOKU instructor should ever use an unsolvable puzzle unless it is for the specific purpose of teaching people how to recognize that the puzzle is unsolvable.
I agree Mike. I'm guessing the problem is the 1 and 4 in block 2 column 6 because there needs to be a 4 in row 4 block 5
I discovered it was invalid when I tried to do the puzzle before watching the Lesson :(
Never do a puzzle before watching at least half of the video!

Unfortunately, the puzzle shown here has no solutions. That is to say, it is self-contradictory right from the start. Using my technique, I encountered a contradiction after just 6 moves (although I didn't notice until about the 12th move). This is the order in which I started the solve (here, in each triple of digits, the 1st indicates the digit to be written, the 2nd indicates the row number (1 to 9 from top to bottom), and the 3rd indicates the column number (1 to 9 from left to right): 646, 842, 823, 834, 232, 552. At this point, there is no place for a 4 in box 4. As it happens, the same contradiction could have arisen after just two moves: 842, 552. Indeed, with a little extra reasoning, the contradiction can be revealed before writing in anything. None of this invalidates your technique, but it's a bit unfortunate.
This is not a real puzzle but set up to show a technique. See my comments below the video in tutorial 40 AND tutorial #41

Great tutorial, lots of patience... What I was missing was using the row marks and simply searching for those 5 numbersin each cell (instead of going 1-9 all the time).
Since you put it down already, recognizing the missing digits, you might have used it, as well.

It makes no sense first writing all the numbers down that can be filled out in that row and next not using it. Each time you check all numbers from 1 to 9 while you actually only have to check the numbers that are still missing: the ones you wrote down at the right of the row. By not limiting you to these numbers you almost made an error (the nine, remember) and you needed more time than necessary.
A demonstration only. Yes there are other ways.

Your explain approaches that are very understandable. I thought I was simply great at solving sudoku puzzles. My determination led me to spend a lot of time solving “ hard” puzzles. But I came across a very hard puzzle that had me spending far too much time trying to solve the puzzle. After five days I realized that I was not able to place a number. I gave up my pride and found you on UA-cam.. You were explaining an approach. to a very hard puzzle. Thanks to your ability explaining very understanding ways to solve tough puzzles, I went back to my very hard puzzle and finally solve the puzzle. Have to agree about the computer assistance. It makes learning and applying various techniques easier but can handicap you when you don't have all those features available.
It’s great to be able to see how the methods work using the computer. But yes you are right you need to learn how to do them without the assistance. If you look at tutorial 40 and above you will learn many moe ways to solve. Robin

@@tezenchumac8841 - He has the answer sheet to the puzzle and is using it as an example to demonstrate what you can deduce. He isn't saying you should be able to find out that is a 3 from where he was, but he means if you took his example of filling out numbers for each row and found oh there is a 3 here what does that mean for this other 23 pair? Oh, I can solve that. That type of thing.

Hello sir! That was a cute yippie, I also followed your technique, but separate them by row 1 row 2 and row 3 and then left, middle and right. Most of the time it works when Iam stuck with my puzzle, 90%, but sometimes not. Nevertheless, thank you so much for your guidance. I am going through your videos to gain more insights. Hello,
Im a bit confused about the 5. Because before you put the 5 in the cell left corner there were more possibiltys in the collom above and under. In the collum you put the 5 there was 3 possibilitys. Can you give me a better explanation. My english is not my mother langaudgde. Thanks in advance.

You take the time to fully explain, which is excellent. I am puzzled (excuse the term) why you worked out the list of possible values for the row, but then as you worked on each cell you considered ALL values including the ones you had already eliminated as possibilities?
Sorry it is my teaching style for dummies!!!!!

Just a point. If you go through and select out the numbers that are left to put into the row, when you go through the boxes you only need to check for those numbers.
You are right. For experienced players but not for beginners. I'm a teacher. Certainly you can use this approach, however it may become messy if your grid is small.
@@SudokuGuy And that's quite a problem. Because you start off with a feeling of superiority and that everybody else is dumb. And they're not. Do the thing Sudoku Guy, people are here to learn. Teach them well.
