  • Do you think you have a hip labral tear? What tests work for labral tears? Have you been told that you have a labral tear? MRI and MRA are purportedly the best way to see if you have a hip labral tear (besides surgery).

    In reality, MRI and MRA appear to have very high false positive rates, making the findings quite ambiguous. This means that the only way to see and confirm a labral tear is to actually go in and look at it arthroscopically!
    However, based on the research, labral tears are very common in people with no symptoms...so if you can't actually see a connection between the images and symptoms, it may not be a great idea to rush in to cut anything! It also means it's basically impossible to tell whether hip pain is actually coming from a labral tear (since other studies show that hip injections don't work to identify labral tears either!).

    I have a torn labrum in both hips. Left hip is worse than the right hip. This went undiagnosed for 12 years. Throughout that time my symptoms got worse, my mobility declined, I’ve fallen several times causing damage to my right knee. I saw many doctors, all with specialties. None ever had the presence of mind to do any imaging. I finally had MRI & CT (with contrast) imaging done. Tests in both hips confirmed along with loss of cartilage. I see a new surgeon tomorrow. My last surgeon canceled my surgery 1 week prior to the procedure due to my weight. Yes, I’ve gained weight due to loss of mobility over 12 years. I’m now losing weight so I can have the surgery done, one hip at a time. To say that I’m frustrated is not even remotely accurate. I have been suicidal in the past. To think of having to live another year with chronic, debilitating, isolating pain is too much. Prayers are always welcome & appreciated.

    Been having horrible debilitating labrum area pain for a year and it is destroying my life. I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy

      I've been working with a therapist to strengthen my glutes and deep core which has definitely helped. I am still in pain most days but its not as bad as it was. Driving a car and sitting in a chair for long periods of time are probably what aggravates things the most which has made getting back to working on the office very stressful. I'm just not sure if this is something I will have to battle the rest of my life or if it will continue to improve.

      Russell Hixson gotcha. I am going through something similar...I too work in an office environment all day and I feel like that is main reason why I’m having hip pain/impingement, tight hip flexors and no range of motion at all. I’m also very active and I think I injured my labrum due to the fact that I sit all day and it wreaks havoc on my hip joints and when i try exercising, it makes my condition worse so not even doing things i love like playing basketball is even an option for me anymore at this point until I can get this issue resolved :/ goodluck to you.

      Thanks! I used skateboard every single day as well as snowboard/hike on the weekends. I suspect that the impact while stopping/jumping etc. over time may have caused some damage. There are good days and bad days and I have found that doing nothing makes it worse and doing too much makes it worse so i have been working to find the sweet spot of building strength while not damaging or aggravating things further. I found that if I am diligent about gently exercising my deep core and glutes, I see the most improvement. My goal right now is to just be able to walk/site/drive without horrible pain. And if i dont ever skate/hike at the level I used to, i am at peace with that.

      Russell Hixson After 7 months I have turned a corner with hip pain. At my age, the cure for a labral tear is hip replacement. I worked with a PT and have done core work and simple exercises, being told not to overdo it. I also did “bicycling” in a pool. Now I can walk far without pain. Just a bit of inner groin pain when I get in and out of the car or stretch the wrong way. So I found these videos as I now work to strengthen muscles. I am now glad I did not do an MRI or cortisone. Piano, piano - slowly, slowly.

    Fabulous research of the research, thanks for saving me hours and hours of sleuthing and deduction. I was told my MRI shows a ‘possible’ hip labrum tear. You’ve single handedly changed my mind about racing for surgery, and I’ve had right hip pain for 3 years. I’ll make the appt with the ortho surgeon but hopefully won’t be keeping it. It’s a long wait to even get in.. THANK YOU. I miss being active so much and can’t bear to think of life without being fit. I’m sore (understatement) and tight and I’m afraid of doing more damage. I’ll look at every exercise I can do before seeing the surgeon. Except I think it’s my whole pelvic structure that’s causing me grief. Many many thanks again.

    I was diagnosed with a Labral tear in my left hip in 2017. I had my right hip replaced due to arthritis in 2010 and experienced the pain involved with that. The Labral tear pain was totally different and brutal. All adult males at one time in their life have received a blow below the belt. That’s what it felt like times three.

    This guy knows what hes talking about! I've had hip problems for more than 5 years due to overuse, exercise, I've been to chiropractic adjustments physiotherapy and they will tell you anything to keep you coming back for the money, so I turned to drink as I couldn't get any answers or relief, I started following this man and I notice big changes its sore but it pays of stop being lazy and move them hip joints into better flexibility and train your brain to know the proper position to be comfortable in. And thankyou mate good free professional advice👍

    Wow! am going to start watching all these videos! have had a stiff right hip and have been getting tight ITB and adductors for three years. MRI showed no labral tear. saw another physio to get another opinion and have been told it might be a minor labral tear. Need to watch these videos to see what i can do to get them to all relax again and hopefully run without discomfort! amazing :)

    Thank you for making this video. I do have hip pain, so I'll check your other videos about stretching the hip muscles. But, I was told I have a labral tear based on an xray, MRI and manual positioning of my leg/hip. They wanted me to come in every three to four months for a shot, but I declined. Your video has me thinking I'm glad I paused for now on the shots and the surgery. Thanks again.

    I have anterior pelvic tilt, si joint pain, pelvic floor problems, MAJOR right testicle pain, insomnia, depression, mania, 3 disc herniations, and angry psoas/QL muscles. However…….I wasn’t paying attention to my aductors. This may sound crazy, but I had my son stand on the inside of my leg (aductors) and OH MY GOD it hurt like a MF. Buttt……75% of the pain was gone afterwards. Make sure you strengthen your glutes and core and it will help. I stretch like a madman and I’m feeling a lot better now. Listen….don’t look for the “magic fix”. Get a deep tissue massage and eat the pain. Also, don’t be a wimp when it comes to stretching. You WILL make progress if you’re willing to fight the urge to stop while stretching. We are a very sedentary society and men SHOULD NOT be sitting for hours at a time. Get up, get active, and live your life to the absolute fullest. Stretch the $!@? out of those tight muscles and strengthen the weak ones!!! You can do it!!

    I was told I have a labral tear and have been encouraged to have surgery. I was so happy to find your excercises, my pain is already a lot better after a few weeks, and I really didn't want to have surgery. I was residned to limping and having pain instead. But things are getting better. Thanks so much.

    HI Matt, I've just stumbled across your material and watched a few videos - always looking for some kind of solution for the incredible discomfort I experience on a daily basis.
    My latest test -an MRI - came back with these results - which I now find very interesting after watching your info on the high rate of false positives.
    Findings are as follows:
    Anteverted acetabulum.
    Spherical morphology of the femoral head
    Chondral irregularity at the anteosuperior hip joint with formation of subchondral cysts and surroundng oedema.
    Associated tearing of the antersuperior 1 o'clock labrum without formation of paralabral cyst.
    Mild thickening and peritendinous signal around the gluteus minimus tendon, suggestive of mild tendinosis.
    Degenearive changes of the right hip joint.
    Yes, this did make me go into a spin when I was first told.
    I've been seeing an oesteopath for the last 6 months with very little improvement and have now advanced to a walking stick or crutch some days depending on how bad my hip is.
    I see the surgeon on the 17th of this month for a consultation, so will be interesting to see the outcome of that.
    Thank you for your posts, I am so appreciative, I was beginning to think at 54 I was a write off because I've become so afraid to walk even the smallest distance because of the pain.
    But now I feel like I've just been given a new lease on life and the future looks much brighter. I will in the mean time watch a few more of your videos and carefully do the stretches and exercises you suggest.

    Very informative video mate! Loved the explanations of each research finding. Been suffering form this issue since the past year now and have just learnt to how to manage it. Pain not gone off completely as yet, but its getting better!

    Oh the memories everyone is causing me! Over 5 yrs ago I fell at work (hidden water on the floor). My pain got worse and worse and as mentioned, no position was possible for any duration without pain. Desperation drove me to find help & answers. That was the hardest part. Lucky for me my daughter in law is a nurse; she helped with suggestions. Going to a well-known sports medicine institute and 4 of their docs, yielded almost nothing. I did NOT need a new hip; my bones are great for an old lady! Still, pain gets old quickly and PT did nothing. Shots were almost useless. I did some homework and chose a surgeon at U of P in Philadelphia. Looking back, his lay-mans explanation to me was rather non-decisive as demonstrated above so it was time to take a chance. I agreed to surgery and the rest is history. He removed the floating broken parts that were causing pain. I was good to go! Think seriously about how and when your pain began and go from there. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. I've been told that pain is natures way of speaking to you. Listen up & good luck. ; )

    Hi! I love your video you show so many great stretches. I have tried them all. My pain from my diagnosed labrum tear has subsided a great deal, from when it first showed up 6 years ago. it however is still present. I hear the popping of my hip constantly and I fear it will lock up one day. I practice yoga 3 times a week and I go to the gym daily. Any other advice you can offer me? I've considered acupuncture, I also purchased a TENS and I am looking into buying a massage gun. Thank you!

    Thanks so much. I've been trying these stretches that you were doing while talking.... and you've convinced me to try to work this out on my own instead of getting the MRI and possibly surgery.... my friend had the same injury and had the surgery and he's still worried he'll re injure it.
    My right hip locks up, causes me pain, clicks, and also contributes to groin pain. I can't go into a full squat without re injuring it. Left hip is much better . I used to skateboard many miles for years though and left was my kicking leg, so it got a lot of range of motion to stay loose.
    I've been wanting to do a full squat to try and keep my hips healthy, but all my attempts make It worse. I end up straining my groin and then get the hip pain more (right hip)

    I don’t know much about laurel tears, only that I’m not able to walk more than 3 minutes and then i have to stop due to pain. I’m finally going to see a spine specialist because of 5 years of debilitating pain. I did go for the spine injection twice and it worked once. It it ok to try some of your exercises as much as i can. I’m so tired of not being able to walk much. I don’t take pain meds. The doctor gave me gabapentin.

    my tear appeared to be small at mra but that sudden injury actually increased the movement and made it very unstable. so you can`t decrease that kind of range of motion :/ it`s not even about the pain, it just doesn`t work normally, has lot of muscle stiffness and pain increases everytime when being provoked like walking

    It took about 3 years to convince doctors of my hip pain. They grew very frustrated every time they tried pulling, pushing, twisting my leg with only one result of limited range of motion with no increase of pain. Finally had surgery for impingement and labral tear that showed on MRI. I ended up having a labral repair, synovectomy, psoas release, fai repair, and…something else. That was 9 years ago. Since then I’ve had chronic pain with limited range of motion. I’ve been tried PT & Pool PT multiple times, chiropractors, massage therapy, acupuncture, muscle relaxers, tens units, steroid injections, tramadol with Gabapentin, NSAIDs, rest, ice, heat,……Now in the past month it feels like it did all those years ago, but with only more pain and I had to start using a cane. Never had to do that with the last one. Waiting to see Ortho and have a feeling they’ll find me with another tear and impingement.

    Your situation is like mine. Cannot sit. Can hardly walk up stairs and just getting up from sitting is excruciating. I recently had an MRI and the result was no Laborial tare ..no fracture and no hip issues!!! When I get up the pain in my groin radiates down the muscle to my femor bone. I must hold myself at a stop to allow the muscle to relax In order to step on my leg.l when getting up from sitting position. Driving with my right foot on gas or break is so painful. Did I mention I am a website designer so I did at my computer to work !! But I cannot sit..cannot work and so laying down flat is only way to get relief. work. Not sure what I can do next???

    Here are my thoughts on labral tears, although everything I say may not be entirely accurate.The labrum is a ring of soft cartilage that goes around the hip socket in a circle. Thus a labral tear is a tear in this labrum. How does this tear occur? It occurs when a spot or area on the fermoral head is rough enough to rub against the labrum cartilage and tear it. Why does the femoral head become rough? The femoral head becomes rough from the wear and tear of hitting against the labrum cartilage. Eventually the cartilage on both the labrum and the femoral head start wearing away until there are certain areas of the femoral head and labrum that have no more cartilage left, and you have bone on bone rubbing, which makes the fenoral head rough, and has hills and valleys. This bone on bone rubbing is what we call osteoarthritis, and the more cartilage that is worn away, the more severity is the osteoarthritis. I should also mention that normally there is a small gap between the labrum and the femoral head, and this gap is filled with synovial fluid. However, when a person stretches the leg to an extreme position, such as in sports, or is carrying a lot of weight, this decreases the gap between the labrum and the femoral head, allowing the labrum and femoral head to rub against each other, and hence the process of developing osteoarthritis begins.

      So what do you do about it? I have 2 labrum tears and arthritis snd for a year I’ve felt like there is a knife sticking into my pelvic area. It’s ruined my quality of life.

      I was told the xray shows no osteoarthritis or arthritis...I'm booked for a CT scan next. They say it's soft tissue or labreal tear and to do physio. I'm scared and just wished I knew.

    Hi there, I appreciated your post in presenting studies that demonstrate the ambiguity of MRI, and MRA testing. Do you know whether those numbers have changed for the better. In other words, are more accurate now? I have a couple of patient's who have had MRI testing done, in 2017 and would like to know if the accuracy of the imaging is still quite variable??? Thanks!!

      Unfortunately I haven't been able to find more recent studies. If you happen to find some, please do share!
      The most recent study that I came across was one on shoulder labral tears and MRI/MRA. While this was for a different joint, the main crux is that the accuracy is not that good. It's really interesting to notice that some previous studies on the accuracy of MRI/MRA for shoulders claim very high accuracy ratings. This study contradicted that. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24985524
      "In our retrospective study of 444 patients, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were all lower than previously reported in the literature for diagnosing SLAP lesions. Our data indicated that while MRI could exclude a SLAP lesion (NPV = 95 %), MRI alone was not an accurate clinical tool. MR arthrography had a large number of false-positive readings in this study. We concluded that even with intra-articular contrast, MRI had limitations in the ability to diagnose surgically proven SLAP lesions."

    Hope you can suggest a stretch for this. When I stand with my legs apart, beyond shoulder width, my left leg bends from the hip joint. The right leg does not, forcing my torso to the left. It's difficult to explain.

    What about x-ray? Just went the ER and was told I have a labrum tear. How accurate would the X-Ray be? I’m also experiencing severe hip pain in that area as well. Thank you

    So you talk about the testing and the inaccuracy of those tests...however you haven't (as the title suggests) said anything about "how to know if you have a hip labral tear."

      @TheRaellz Agree, it is NOT POSSIBLE to fix labral TEARS with PT but it is possible to improve mobility depending on patient and PT but yeah not possible to fix with PT

      He made his point! You can not tell with certainty without open surgical observation. Even then, an observed labeal tear can be asymptomatic, or the symptoms experienced are from STs and not the labrum!

      This was not helpful at all. I expected some example exercises that might indicate a problem. Or even what hip movements NOT to try if you are having hip pain.

    You've definitely convinced me to ATM! I had x-rays and an MRI. Labral deterioration is what they called it. Plus FAI hip impingement. Ok no problem I will do the PT and follow your workouts (already helping) The problem is that they also diagnosed a partially torn hamstring attachment. Trying to stretch my hamstrings in the proper form but I had no pain from the hamstring injury (unless it's what's causing everything else) Anyway, I don't know if that hamstring injury can heal as I strengthen and stretch or if stretching will injure my hamstring more. Oh and I have HEDS hypermobility so stretches like the ones you were doing come pretty easy but that doesn't mean I won't injure. Do you have a video about hamstring injuries and how to approach rehabilitation of them?

    Awesome vid guy. :). I had a combo fai repair back in 16. My ortho tried ( he really did his best) to make a labrum from the crap i had left. Said 3 o clock to 11 was gone. Now 18 months later Im getting an allograft. My pain problem is burning in my groin and constant soreness. Thats the worst.

    The exercise that you are doing the first minute I cannot do at all with my right hip. It kills in the front corner of the hip to do that and if I go to put my shoe on while standing and bending forward. My mri said a small tear (not complete) but if I leg swing it feels like the femoral head is popping out only on the right side. I also have cam deformities to boot. Does that sound right?

    Somewhere in the middle of the video (around 4:20), you mix up sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity is the rate of true positive while specificity is the rate of true negative. So if the sensitivity is 75%, it means that out of a 100 patient with labral tear, 75 can be diagnosed correctly from the imaging. It does not say anything about true negative rate.

    I find the more aggressive I am in my workout the less pain I am in. If I remain dormant than I experience more pain. For me stretching, resistance bands and weight training (squats, lunges, hip extensions) relieve my pain, stuffiness and general discomfort.

    Mine just like yours. First the doctor told it’s my back giving me a hip pain. They took X-ray on my hips and back. The only thing about my back was no curve but the spine specialist says nothing about it. Start going to PT and chiropractor but it doesn’t change my hips still tight so the spine specialist refer me to the hips specialist then they took an X-ray on my hips they say I have FAI . I got no idea what is that he just told me that my hips going bad and my spine Doctor order a MRI on my back and the hip doctor orde MRI on my hips. I did my back MRI and I’m not sure if I want to proceed for my hip MRI. Cause I saw your video and some other video on you tube that you can get of this condition by strengthening the muscles around it.

    I had a hip scope to repair my torn labrum. I was in tons of pain pre surgery and the rehab was hard. 9 months post surgery I was pregnant, had a baby (something I worried about with my hip pain) and have been pain free for 8 years now.

    Thank you! Especially where you said to carefully wait longer. I have pain longer then 1 yr. Will endure it, for it comes and goes away. Maybe by just carefully keep going on doing, moving, light stretches. The pain will stop. If not I go make the mri or mra.

    Matt,The MRA shows I have a small tear in my anterior superior labrum. I became a member of upright health & bought the course 'Healthy hip - 1". I live in Houston and can't commute to CA. What courses will be useful to me for my condition if I don't want to do surgery at this level?

    In the last 2 years hip labral tear surgeries have sky rocketed. I remember only seeing a few hashtags in instagram, a few groups and not too many posts on facebook, and a few blogs in runners websites, and maybe 5 people on UA-cam vlogging their recovery. I read the articles on ncbi about being asymptomatic and PT vs surgery outcomes being the same. It's crazy how much low back pain mimics hip pain, I have tears in both my hips and fai. I was in such bad shape, but I was also suffering from a low back strain at the time my MRI's on my hips were done, so how long did I really have those tears and were they the source of my pain? and now that my back has almost made a full recovery so has my hip pain...I see so many people worse after hip labral repair and fai resurfacing they need 2nd revisions, 3rd revisions, they end up with blood clots and nerve damage, re tears, hip dysplasia, hip replacement, its ridiculous and nobody is questioning the orthopedic surgeons why they are butchering people's hips. This is still a fairly new surgery and there is no long term data on it but I can tell from all the groups and posting on facebook that the majority of people end up fucked up even more

      @@ytonaona yes, my hips felt better once my lower back got better. I healed my lower back following a routine that involved stretching, foam rolling, muscles strengthening, and chiropractic visits.
      So my low back pain was caused by a strain due to repetitive movements that caused muscles to become tight and others to become inhibited. So my quadriceps and hip flexors got tight>then my glutes became inhibited>then my hamstrings tightened>then my abdominals muscles became inhibited-which then led to low back and hip pain.
      I foam rolled my quads and hip flexors, stretched my hamstrings, and a lot emphases on strengthening my glutes and abdominal muscles.
      You wouldn't believe how bad my hips hurt on the outer side, on the front hip and the inner groin, but all that pain was actually referred pain I was having from my back pain. Look it up, L3 L4 L5 pain patterns, all the same as hip pain. But what confuses alot of people is when you have thr MRA on your hips and tears appear. So how long have you really had those tears? There's so many studies of asymptomatic patients with abdominal hip finding so why is it that I'm in pain? There's questions you need to ask yourself, and alot of people won't want to ask.

      @@ytonaona hip pain started off with certain movements like tying my shoelace, pivoting on 1 leg, lifting leg into a high chair or in and out of car, then the pain came on and didn't go away. Walking felt like a stabbing punching pain in my hip area, my leg felt like it wanted to buckle, I had anterior pelvic tilt from the hips being so tight(they were overpowered from working many years in manual labor)

      Do you still avoid some movements/postures ?
      For example, can you squat or does it injure the hip and therefore you don't do it anymore ?
      I mean, are you in a mindset of "reducing pain while lowering expectations" or in a mindset of "reducing pain and I want to attain 0/10 pain and do the things I couldn't do".
      (for me it would be heaven if I could deep squat again without feeling increased pain for several weeks afterwards.)
      2. For how long did you the healing (muscles routine, chiropractor etc.) before noticing improvements ?
      3. How long ago (from today) did you start the healing ?

    I had an MRI yesterday that indicated a labral tear of the left hip along with gluteal maximus and gluteal minimus partial tendon tears, and mild stress injury versus contusion involving the femoral neck. I have not had a trauma, it started hurting three months ago. My healthcare provider really is pushing for surgery. I asked about physical therapy but was told it really wouldn't help. Its quite painful and I really need a cane if I'm walking any length of distance. My questions is can physical therapy help my labral tear without further hurting my gluteal partial tears? Can physical therapy exercises help both issues at the same time? I want to at least try a course oh physical therapy before doing something as invasive as surgery yet I don't want to make matters worse.

    I ve injured my hip stayin in the test position you re showin! I tried to reach my knee and i felt a pop on the hip, at First no pain but After few day i started feel pain in my groin till today still After 2 years. MRI didnt show anything. My leg doesnt stand straight like the other causing me to limp coz i also have a turf toe. I know my body is a mess. Have been to lots of doctors but no body really helped me, excepted trigger point therapy and stretching, but still hard to stand and walk like before. What do u suggest to do in this condition?       Your leg probably isn't standing straight because your hip is weak so your knee may cave in more. This happened to me too. Just felt a painless pop then few days later severe pain and dysfunction

    Going thru this now. having right front hip pain. at times it feels like a stabbing or pinching and then my leg feels like it might give out upon standing (i sit a lot). mri report said it saw arthritis and subchondral cyst but no evidence of labral tear. made appt with orthopaedic surgeon to review it.

      Been at this 3 yrs. finally found a chiropractor and massage therapist to help. Mostly some weak muscles and other tight muscles. Lots of stretching and strengthening at and myofacial release at home Some work on the machines at the gym to help range of motion. Water exercise also helps. Look for answers on u-tube and within yourself

    I had 3 MRIs and all showed a labral tear, 2 on one side and 1 on the other... After surgery this was confirmed to be 100% accurate. If you have FAI and diagnosed with a tear with an MRI it's very unlikely it's not there...

      Yes, I'm not sure how to interpret this video.
      For example, assuming a test specificity of 78% would imply that 22% of people who don't have the condition will be identified has having the condition (false-positives).
      However, my intuition would say that if you've got: a history of hip pain AND positive clinical tests, then that will mean it's unlikely you're in that group who don't have the condition.
      Really, what you want to see, is the probability of labral tear identified at surgery given History AND Clinical Tests AND MRI/MRA Positive.

    HAS anyone hurt their hip from the splits, and how did that feel? I have pain in my outer hip, like where my leg joins the pelvis. I'm panicking because Im an athlete and my hip hurts even just to walk at this point. (not all the time, just long distances) I love running, I do Yoga and I had just started Taekwondo. I love to dance and even that hurts. I'd be devastated if this requires surgery. I cannot afford it and I wouldn't risk it in my country.
    Has anyone had an injury like this this and did it heal with rest?

    How about this: shoulder pain caused by bad posture (slouching and forward shoulders). Improved posture and all that with PT, but still huge gap in left shoulder between socket and humeral head. Still pain, and now have found impingement. Said might need MRI 😒 not really good news for me.... Don't really know what to do. My shoulder keeps sliding around, even when I do the exercises.

      Sounds like your shoulders are subluxing. Mine did and I had bilateral impingement. I would reckon you have a slap tear. I had bilateral subpectoral tendonesis'. I would skip the internet stuff and find yourself a real trustworthy doc and get yourself fixed up. Good luck

      Morgan S I did go to the doctor recently, and they did x-rays and MRIs. Turns out, I have really loose joints, and a posterior anterior tear, although it's really small. So no surgery and just rehab. Subluxation is uncomfortable though ,😔

    I'm pretty sure I've injured my hip labrum. My pain becomes extremely intense after about 5 minutes of continual walking. The pain steadily increases when I start walking. When it's most intense, it feels like a deep burning in the joint. It's most intense on each step. If I push it without stopping every couple of minutes, the pain feels like it radiates around my thigh and down my leg. Do any of these sound like anything any of you have experienced? If so, your input would help.

      I get this too, only for me it usually starts after about 20-30mins. If I do a one hour walk, it's agony afterwards, feels like I have to drag my leg around for the next 24hours lol. I'm getting old :P

      I got a labral tear FROM stretching too much, and stretching my hips induces the pain. I thought the same thing as you, kept stretching intensely, and have left it untreated for at least a year. I understand where you are coming from in the sense that people should stretch instead of doing nothing, but implying that it will help a labral tear is wrong.

    Thanks for sharing 🙏🏽 Just started watching this one and commenting as I watch. I have a tear in mine. I’m wanting to know what I can do with my body that doesn’t hurt and promotes me getting better. All the while getting my heart rate up.
    I have a partial tear in my rotator cuff also so I’m not allowed to do much with my upper body right now unfortunately.
    The MRI 3T helped us identify what’s going on or what they suspect. It’s the strongest MRI available.

    What Matt Hsu does not mention is that labral tears also sometimes show up on x rays, even though many health officials will tell you that labral tears will not show up on x rays. I had a labral tear, and an x ray was taken, and the labral tear showed up on the x ray. In fact, the doctor showed me the labral tear on the x ray..

      Thx for the question. I'm not a physiotherapist. I am a personal trainer and orthopedic massage therapist with a LONG personal history of severe debilitating body-wide joint and muscle pain. I've been helping people with chronic pain since 2007 and have seen so many instances where the medical diagnoses ended up having zero bearing on function and comfort levels that I thought something was fishy. I never want to hurt someone, so I've done lots of research to see what's actual valid information. The more I dig, the more I see the research doesn't generally back up all the scary musculoskeletal diagnoses. So I share what I find as much as I possibly can!

    my doctor says I have bone spurs that are tearing my labrum in both hips. He wanted to replace both hips . I said no. This was 3 years ago. I can hardly get around now but it is not just my hips that hurt so I wonder what the real problem is. My lower back and sacrum are really hurting . Bad groin pain . knee pain, sides of hips hurt now and front . My Chiropractor helps me but it only last a few days now. I would give anything to fix this.

      What you need to do, is go see some orthopedic surgeons, get opinions, and figure out what you need to do. If you were told you needed surgery 3 years ago, there was probably a very good reason. Trying to avoid surgery is only making your scenario worse. Sometimes surgery is the only option.

      What are you doing to strengthen the muscles around the affected area? Your muscles are responsible for properly aligning your joints, and for absorbing shock from everyday activity. Musculoskeletal symptoms can never be resolved by neglecting your muscles. Good luck!

    Yes but, what if your hip is in PERMANENT pain all the time, and only eases when you lie down or sleep? 3 years of agony and it's not going away. I don't know what's wrong with me ( I don't like doctors), and everything I've done to try and fix this hasn't worked. I've done strengthening for torn hamstrings, tight tfl, tight itb, as.aged discs, piriformis syndrome - NOTHING has worked. I think it might be a labral tear as the time it happened I had previously stomped on a tyre iron with my left foot to change a tyre, and for two months afterwards when I woke up every morning my left foot had pins and needles, and my bottom RIGHT buttock was on fire. This pain has NEVER eased, and NEVER gone away. My doctors suck and I just want a possible answer before I do a Tony Scott.

    hey matt! ive feeling a lot better in most areas of my groin. sometimes if i over stretch can do alil more dmg to my psoas then help. ive been getting more active and motion in my hip but im starting to feel pain in my lower right side back (not alot) and now just starting to feel pain in my front abs under my ribcage on the right side. just wondering if you've ever felt something like this and or if you think its normal or correlates with my hip?

      I have a hip labrum issue and if you are describing a pain in the lower back it could possibly be your SI Joint which can be very painful due to a labrum issue. My physical therapist told me stretching out the joint and building some glute muscle (squats) can help. Good luck!

    I was just thinking -- perhaps if a test was 75% accurate, the other 25% could possibly be that the test couldn't show anything? Rather than a false result?
