  • Our final Winter Lecture of this season comes from CPAT Senior Archaeologist Ian Grant.
With funding from Cadw, the National Trust and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB, the Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust returned to Chirk Castle in September 2021. This excavation, the latest in a series on the National Trust site, was located south-west of the castle range, investigated an area where a structure known as the “West Building”, illustrated on 18th and 19th century maps.
This was a significant structure - a ‘U’ shaped building which consisted of a north and south wing, each at least 15-16 metres long and 6 metres wide, attached to a 22 metre long and 6.5 metre wide east wing. Initially investigated in 2020, archaeologists and volunteers returned in 2021 to uncover more of the building.
Join Ian for an exploration of what we found in 2021, and how it fits into the long history of this fantastic historic landscape.
