Dear muttnchop piper, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I just want to say that I actually work at a tobacco store, and I am always recommending this channel to people who have questions about pipes. The amount of detail that you channel contains can help customers in ways that I simply don’t have the time to explain. Thanks for your work, and I hope you have a great holiday of piping.

My grandfather left me many tins of tobacco from the 1950's and I'm smoking the ones that rusted and leaked air once they were rehydrated and they are extremely mellow and smooth. The flavor is very subtle and the room note is very pleasant. Fresh tobacco smells sharp like chemicals compared to the old stuff that has mellowed out and finished fermenting. I don't have the heart to pop the tins that are still under pressure, kind of like disturbing an archeological site, lol.

Gotta be honest and say that I like the old backdrop of your "tobacco corner" with all your tins, jars and pipes better than the shed backdrop.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend -- always great to see when you've posted a video. Looking forward to the comparison of these two. Your previous cellaring videos got me into doing it for myself, and I just got 5 tins of Fusilier's Ration in a couple days ago to add to the cellar. I can't wait to test that one out in 5 and 10 years against a new tin.

I recently bought a tin of Prince Albert at a tobacco advertising antique show here in NC from what I think is 1972. The tobacco is wrapped in paper with a promo for a free Dr. Grabow pipe with 4 proofs of purchase that expires on 12/31/1972. I have it in a jar with a humidifier and I can't wait to give it a try once it gets a little more hydrated.

Cellaring tobacco is very similar to a casserole dish or perhaps a big pot of chilli; it always tastes better 2-3 days after it's made. The flavors meld and mingle to create a much deeper, richer flavor profile.
Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the taste tests video.

Great explaination about cellaring our tobacco. This is something in the premium cigar industry they do both before they make cigars, and after the cigars are rolled. They go into a marrying room to age. Some pipe tobacco is too young when first shipped. I learned so much from this series on pipe tobacco and how it ages. Thank you for all you are doing.

I just watched a video where these two guys cellared 5lbs of Lane 1Q for 5 years (Markwood Men's Breakfast Club), and then said that it wasn't as good as fresh 1Q. That really concerns me since I am a "blend collector type of pipe smoker" and am primarily an aromatic smoker. I was previously a cigar smoker, and this year I tried pipe smoking, and now I only smoke pipes. :-) I'd love to hear opinions specifically on the topic of cellaring aromatic tobaccos. I love your videos, and you are the first pipe smoking channel I've subscribed to.

Wonderful! Kindly include a brief comment on types of tobacco that age or peak differently in some future video/series. I'll heard Virginias gain great benefit from cellaring and peak at a certain length of time while others might benefit to a lesser (but still very worthwhile) extent when given either more or less years. And I imagine aromatics can be an entire different ballgame. Looking forward to Part 2!

It happened to me with a tin of Pease's Cumberland bought in 2010 when, together with Red Virginia and a little Perique, there was Kentucky aged 20 years. I decided to open it last month. The tin was swollen and when I opened it, enchanting aromas of candied fruit, dried plums and licorice emerged. In the pipe it smokes soft and round, and I relit it only once during the smoke. I believe that aging is suitable for certain tobaccos because time allows them to harmonize aromas and perfumes.

Thanks for another great video! I always wondered if there was “aged” tobacco. I personally come from the tea world (actual tea, not herbal) and some, if not the most expensive teas have been fermented often for decades. Very curious to know what could happen with tobacco if the right conditions for fermentation were discovered!

My main reasons to cellar tins and bulk tobacco are to avoid future price increases and to secure a supply in the event that tobacco is banned. Another reason is to buy now while I am working and can afford it; later, in retirement, I may be on a greatly reduced income.

Amazing video !!!! The cellered tobacco blend has married all the blends together. Being a new pipe smoker, only for 2 and 1/2 years now , so I'm a baby pipe smoker have learned alot from you and other seasoned pipe smokers and I appreciate the knowledge you share. I just turned 57 years old so even though I have about 100 different blends in bulk, Mason jars and multiple tins I have the feeling that I have enough time to enjoy a 20 year old blend, but they will also be enjoyed for generations after me. People who come over ask why I have 6 tins of the same tobacco and dont understand my plan. Someday 20, 30, 40 years from now someone will be grateful for my work now I guess.., as they will yours my friend. Good to see you, and now time to watch part 2 God Bless

I agree! I'm a pretty new pipe smoker (maybe 2ish years). I tried Escudo and didn't much like it at first. It just seemed grassy (which I guess is normal for Virginias? Seems some people like it but I don't want to smoke hay, personally). Jarred it and 9 months later it just smelled like plums.. delicious. So now I'm slowly stockpiling tins.
Anyway sorry for the long post. Just wanted to chime in and say I agree that it doesn't have to take many years to make a big difference, a little time can help a lot!

When I first found out about the advantages of aged pipe tobacco, it was around 2009 or 10, and I found out about it just by accident, because the store owner, where I bought all my pipe tobacco at the time, gave me a tin of a Samuel Gawith-Balkan Flake, that when I got home, I found out that it had rust all around the rim of the lid.
I almost hadn't opened it that day... I was so angry that she gave it to me in this "bad" condition... and so I wanted to bring it back to the store, to get it replaced the next day.
But then I opened it anyways, because I was a bit curious...and what had smiled at me in that tin, was a deep black flake that had whitish chrystals all over it...and when I smoked it, it was just heaven.
Since then I always put some cans and glasses to be aged.
One has to understand, that aging pipe tobacco wasn't really a thing here in Germany at that time yet.
So I'm very happy that I found out about it by accident, many years before it became a well known thing around here.

  • @briarboy8959

Yes it’s well worth it, not only for the benefits of aging but the cost and lack of availability have increased substantially in just the past 10 years. Not to mention it only increases in value if you decide to sell it later.

I just discovered your videos a few months ago when I decided to pick up my pipe again after smoking a pipe on and off for 17 years. Everything I “know” about pipe smoking is from what I had watched on UA-cam those years ago. Great video! cant wait to see the comparison in the next video. I have had the opportunity to smoke some cellared tobaccos with various years of age on them, and I have really enjoyed some Vapers and Vaburs with 5+ years on them. It's my understanding that Virginia blends age well because of the natural sugar content and other types don't age as well. In your opinion, will the tobacco reach a peak? and generally, at what point do you think that a tobacco would have past its prime? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Be Safe and Happy Smokes!

    • @MuttnchopPiper

Now for the big question: what kinds of blends work best for aging?
