This performance was less than a year before Benny Goodman died. It is very pleasant and touching to see these older couples listening and dancing to the music they grew up with.
They look like they were having such a good time. Wish I was there...

I saw this program when it was first broadcast, had to pinch myself when I realized "Holy s*, it's 1985 and I'm watching the Benny Goodman band live and in full gallop!" If only we'd been able to hear Shaw, Miller, and the Dorseys under the same circumstances ...
Reportedly this program was to test out the band for a new series of concerts. But as you noted, we lost him shortly afterwards.

Gladdens my heart to hear Benny playing music he made popular 50 years prior...Just shows that great music does not age. 👍 Benny passed away a year after this was recorded.

I saw Benny in about 1985. He had them turn the sound system off, saying "If you can't hear, come down front. But you'll be able to hear. We play loud enough for dancing, that's the whole point. Feel free to dance if you want, that's what this music is for." Few danced but we could hear and he played beautifully.

Can't stop watching this video. If this performance isn't perfection, it is as close as you can get. It gives me mental images of that generation...The Greatest Generation.

How many people thought Benny Goodman, if they had even heard of him, was some kind of shooting star who faded out in the 1940's? No, he was swinging and creative right up to the end of his life. And don't let anyone think of this music as a nostalgia trip. It is timeless - and there are countless young people out there still doing it.

Just fabulous - how wonderful to see genius masquerading as a humble band leader. How civilised the world was back then - and the musicians could all play - having studied for 20 years to get to this level of skill. Wonderful music - wonderful era.

This man and a few other orchestra leaders are what I thought were the "end of the world", when I first heard them play back in the day. The incomparable Benny Goodman, was the man who got folk's feet to tapping across the globe. I can't praise him highly enough. Truly a great guy .

I love this video clip. Just look at those grandmas and grandpas enjoying themselves. It looks like they are still in their 20s. I can't see myself dancing to contemporary music when I am at the they are now. How disappointing. Maybe there a few exceptions. I'm keen to hear from those who'll be dancing to contemporary popular music in their over 50s. The senior with lady in green looks like Sir Alex Ferguson. They are my favorite couple in the room.

My wife and I have danced all our lives (now 71 y/o). Lucky enough to catch some big bands in the 60s and 70s now they seem to be mostly gone. Now we dance to country western music at least once a week with the same 2-step we love and a little 'jitterbug' thrown in. Still lots of great dancing here in Arizona, especially during the winter when all us 'snowbirds' fill the bars and halls. We are lucky!

Oh My..to see Goodman while listening to him..wonderful. See those shoulders go..and his legs move!! He really lived his music. I read his biography..good read!! Is that Louis Belson on drums??? With a very bad hair piece..I saw Louis Belson backing Tony Bennett at the Chevron Silver Spade Room in Sydney when I was 18..I was sitting so close to Tony Bennett I could have touched him!! Belson was, of course, terrific!. And Mr Bennett..(am I spelling his name correctly??) was sublime!! Americans have always had the best musos, singers... and the most interesting!! Good on you guys!!

That the cameraman was cleaning his lens with butter is an apt and funny description of what he might have been doing. Thanks for the laugh.
