What I especially love about this film is that it doesn't even attempt to frame Wikus as anything, but a spineless company drone that only learns empathy when it's him who becomes 'the other'. The aliens are the victims in this, not Wikus, and not once, outside of interviews with his family, does the film make him look like anything beyond the self-serving scumbag that he is. That's the kind of challenging cinema we need more of in the mainstream.

    • @commanderkruge
      @commanderkruge 2 роки тому +39

And still in the end, when he finally grows a spine one can't help but root for him. Because at least now he get's "it" - and it would be such a waste if he now died and everything he learned would be gone again.

All of the lead actors scenes were filmed in chronological order, so that the actor could experience everything in the same sequence.

      That's the thing.
      It's all metaphor.
He WAS a spineless coward, but he kicked some A in the end.
He recognized the errors of his ways, so to speak.
After nearly abandoning him, he came back for Christopher and his baby boy, because he knew it was the RIGHT thing to do in the end.
And he accepted his fate for what else he had done.
I mean, you can't exactly love Wickus, but you can't exactly hate him either.
He was taught to be a villain by his peers, and he learned empathy the hard way.
I can empathize with him in that regard.

Neil Blomkamp has announced he is going to make District 10. Said he wasn't going to do a sequel but a idea for a story came to him and he is going to make the sequel now. This is a original sci-fi film and very refreshing to see we need more films like this coming out today. I recommend you watch Alien Nation Starring James Caan. Sci-Fi can allow for an otherwise "impossible" story to be told, or to let an important story be told in a way that either surprises or is more attention-grabbing. If this was simply another story about apartheid, then many people wouldn't be interested, but as a Sci-Fi movie they may see it without the historical baggage. It is reaching a whole new audience with its important social commentary.

Exactly! This is why I hate all the pretentious movie critics and Masterpiece Cinema intellectuals who belittle and disregard entire genres of film. These Oscar bait types think that only historical dramas, westerns, war movies and crime dramas are the only types of films that can be considered "real art", while they demean sci-fi, action, superhero, horror and other entire genres of film as not being "real" cinema. But let's be honest! If you actually follow the box office revenue and reach of movies then you'd know that action, horror and sci-fi have a significantly wider audience then dramas and history movies. And a lot of writers know this which is why we have so many sci-fi, horror and action movies that help to introduce their audience to themes of bigotry, war, oppression, mental health, fascism and class privilege. I guarantee you that movies like District 9, The Hunger Games, Get Out, Starship Troopers, Candyman and Blade Runner have done more to educate people on class inequality and systemic bigotry then movies like Selma, 12 Years a Slave, The Help, Hidden figures, Parasite and Moonlight.

"District 9" (2009) reminded me of "Alien Nation" (1988), except that the Newcomers/"Slags" were (sorta) hominid in appearance and weren't treated like an Alien underclass, generally. The movie was an "Odd Couple" Police procedural, while the TV series (1989-1990) and specials dealt with civil rights issues. It is worth noting that the Prawn tech could have been used to take over Earth, but was only used by a transforming Human against bigots of the sort he used to be. 18:32 The "you need to re-watch films you saw as a tyke, since you need time to grow up" applies to films and TV shows such as "Cowboy Bebop" to "Firefly" to "Arrival.";) Along with the "Alien" and "The Terminator" franchises. I found "Chappie" (2015) and "Elysium" (2013) to be underrated SF movies with much to say.

This film hits pretty hard for some of us, its very obviously an allagory for apartheid and racial segregation, and refugee crises. Australia for the past few years has been treating refugees similarly horrendously; dehumanizing them by calling them 'boat people', and literally just locking them up on Christmas Island in detention centers and our PM prancing around proudly that he "stopped the boats". As a man who's half Burmese, who's parents had to flee their country and seek asylum in Australia, watching our government treat modern refugees like the Prawns in this movie makes it particularly poignant.

This movie was a showcase for WETA. Peter Jackson created WETA in New Zealand when he made Lord of the Rings trilogy. WETA is considered one of the best special effects company in the world, some people believe they are even better than George Luca's Industrial Light and Magic (Disney owned now). District 9 was launched a year before Avatar (their creation as well), it was their 2nd golden age - it pushed CG to a new level of realism. Even today it still looks good.

It's a bit like a vampire or werewolf movie, yeah? Where the protagonist gets turned into a creature of a different, possibly opposing, culture or nature. Superheroes, mutants, ghosts, pod people, the Thing, zombies, even 1984. In Brave New World, he hung himself. When it happened to Bruce Campbell, he cut his own hand off. It seems really original and different, but actually it's a really common trope. They just execute it so believably in a really gritty way to describe some great social criticism, so it has weight and depth and creativity. In sci-fi, the real novelty here is as a first contact scenario. District 9 is most decidedly a new take on that.

’Ex machina’ and ‘Moon’ are both excellent sci fi movies from recent years that you might like, not as much gore but still worth watching, also the Matt Damon movie ‘ Elysium’ also directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Another Blomkamp movie you might like is Chappie.
And another one I rank in the same tier as D9 and Chappie is Code 8, a movie where superpowers have become somewhat common place, but Powered individuals are supposed to register with the government, and Unregistered Power use is a felony.

Lindsay Ellis mentioned this: District 9 is what Bright wanted to be. It doesn't pull any punches on its apartheid allegory and is very clear about why the power structures in place are what make people evil.

Nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture, but lost to The Hurt Locker.
My dad says this movie is a cross between Alien Nation meets Planet Of The Apes.
Sharlto Copley is an awesome actor, he would star in 2 more Neil Blomkamp movies: Elysium and Chappie.
He played Howling Murdock in the Liam Neeson action comedy The A Team, based on the TV series.
He played a scumbag weapons dealer in the ensemble action comedy Free Fire.
He even played multiple characters in the Sci-fi Action movie Hardcore Henry

This is one of the greatest sci-fi flicks of all time. Hands down. Fuck Star Wars and all the recent Alien movies. D9 is KING. I saw this at the cinema and it instantly became one of my favorites. Too bad Blomkamp hasn't made anything as great as this afterwards. But wow, what a movie. The good news is they're currently working on the script for D10, which should be coming in 2023. Hope it's as awesome as D9.

Great reaction guys! People in the comments keep on saying that this film is underrated. How?! District 9 was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and it is critically acclaimed. Overall, I like this movie. It's definitely different. I believe that it is subtly a satire on the old Apartheid policies of South Africa disguised as an alien Sci-fi Action film.

    • @richardharrison284
      @richardharrison284 Рік тому +2

Not entirely. First the name. A real place named District Six was a famously rare suburb in South Africa where people of different races lived together and the residents were forced out, it was bulldozed. The authorities attitudes were similar to the the Apartheid government but the folks on the street complaining was more in line with Xenophobic quotes by some South Africans of ALL races when talking about justifications given for attacks on people from African countries north of South Africa around the time that the film was being made.

It's believed the reason we never got a sequel is because Christopher was lying. There are several parts of the movie where the dialogue is basically:
"If I help you, will you cure me?"
    "...Uh yeah sure."

Great movie, Blomkamp's best film. You guys should check out his short film that this is based on, called Alive in Joburg (2006).
I've noticed his career has gone downhill critically and financially with each feature film. From District 9's ratings of ~90%, to Elysium's ~60% (which I liked despite the massive plot hole and him saying he messed up on that film), to Chappie's ~40%, to Demonic's ~20%. That is quite a fall. His Oats Studios work is more miss than hit too. He didn't get too far with "Alien 5" which turned out to be a beat for beat copy of Aliens anyway. So, no thanks. He does have some gem moments in his career. I loved his Halo short (2007), and recently his Anthem short (2019). He's wonderful with visual effects and I think that' where he belongs. Maybe District 10 can be a return for him.

All I know now is that it had really sealed my love for sci-fi horror/action. Definitely one of the best ones out there imo.

I wrote a paper on this this movie for intercultural communication class. Needless to say I had a lot to work with. I think one of my favorite thematic moments is when he dons the mech suit, a machine that looks one of the aliens to signify how he has embraced his change both physically and mentally in the finale. He covers up the last human looking part of Himself in the armor in the moment he becomes a hero and his transformation both from human to alien is near complete but also his transformation from terrible person to hero.

I honestly believe the biggest issue with Chappie was that they shoehorned those Die Antwoord people into it and gave them such huge roles. They couldn't act and put too much of themselves into it (as in being themselves rather than playing a new part) to the point it was obnoxious and silly. If they had cast actual actors into those rolls it would have been much better, in my opinion.
