- This is the second part of a series of videos on upgrading / tuning the Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 21 Tube DAC for improved sound quality.
In this episode I review the upgrades made by a previous owner and replace the power supply bypass capacitors on the main board with Nichicon's best KZ, Panasonic FC and Wima polyesters. The op-amps used are also re-evaluated and tuned to improve the sonic character and detail retrieval.

Your videos leave me wanting desperately to get my Trivista upgraded as well. I purchased it brand new. It has recently come out of 9 years storage with my audio system. Just recently set things up in our remodeled home. Haven’t been able to get my system work just yet. I’m fearing that it’s boiling down to a flaw in my Sonic Frontiers Line 3 Tube preamp. I don’t know, I’m at my wits end. Great presentation, sir.
Glad you enjoy the videos! Sorry to hear you're having a problem with your pre-amp. Good luck tracing that down.
The Tri-Vista is a great base for upgrades because like most manufacturers they really cheaped out on component/parts quality, especially on the capacitor front. If it helps, when I'm done with mine I'll probably write a manual / make a kit available for other DIYers to follow.
Interesting point on the opamps. Its so nice you can swap em to get the sound tou your liking. Have you ever heard about THS4032 ? It appears to have been put in my trivista during mod of previous owner.
Hi, no not come across that one before. There are so many out there.
This is really interesting. How does one go about learning enough to be able to make mods to hifi equipment?
Thanks for your question Ashish. Ooh, that's a tricky one. An understanding of electronics helps, but for high-end audio there is much that isn't in a text book.
Understanding what to change and why. If you don't you could end up spending a great deal on changing things that will have little or no change in sound quality.
The forums, e.g. diyaudio.com, pinkfishmedia, etc. can give some insight, but beware forums can be unwelcoming, particularly by those at the extremes of the subjectivist vs objectivist camps. It can take a while to find the wheat among the chaff. Hope that helps as a starter though.
Do you do this for money?
The Tri-Vista is my own DAC, but yes I do offer upgrades for a range of kit and custom / bespoke projects. Some of which is on maudifi.co.uk.
next time please get a better camera, they shakey cam is annoying
